View Full Version : Are you going to buy Ultimates 3?

really quick one, but I'd really want to know what this board thinks about the future creative team and what you expect from Loeb and Mad and Mc Guinness. Some could say that, considered the names involved you already know how it's going to be but the question is: are you going to buy U3, which will be a more action-oriented, patriotic, NON- controversy and definitely more ordinary comic than the first two books?

A tad unreasonable toward Mr Loeb :o
I have reservations about the art more than the writing but I'll give it a try. The Ultimates has been my favorite book since issue 1, both the writing and the art has been absolutely fantastic (two Brits of course :D ) so yeah, I'll be picking it up, well the first six issues anyway - if it sucks I have no problem dropping it.

i will, but whether or not i stick with it is another matter since the guys taking over have a hard act to follow and i'm not exactly a fan of either. i have reservations, the ultimates has always been a great title because of its creative team, whether or not the new creative team measure up. . . we'll see, but i doubt it

I will try atleast 3. But if I dont care for it I wont get 4.
Im just not a fan of loeb, I mean he has written some good stuff but more often than not I dont like his stuff at all. And he has no middle ground to me, I either like it or I hate it.
But to me millar made the ultimates and I love the way he handles them. Of Course, all the ultimate titles I liked best when millar wrote them.

05-08-2007, 04:41 AM
as for me, No, I'm not getting it. Not only they're going to screw up big time all the characterizations and subtle criticism that made the comic so unique, but Loeb is going to lamerize the whole thing reducing it to a ordinary action book.
Look at my quote: do you think Loeb would EVER write such stuff?
It's ging to be one of those I've read enough in the years. And McGuinness and Mad style don't freaking fit with the realistic tone Ultimates was about

I'll check it out. Why not? I like a lot of Loeb's stuff. Mostly the celebrated Batman stuff, Spider-man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow and Hulk: Gray. I've yet to read any team-based stuff by him that is any good so that's the only reason to be worried about it. His work on Fallen Son: The Death Of Ccaptain America proves this - Wolverine issue = great, Avengers issue = quite dull. I will miss Hitch's art but at least the issues will hopefully be on schedule this time around.

I loved the Ultimates 1 and 2, excepting the delays. I feel it's time for me to put my money where my mouth is and actually show Marvel that a 7 month delay between issues is unacceptable, and not buy the book in the future. Granted I'm just one person and that alone won't make a difference but if many did it they would think twice about their responsibilities. That said, Ultimates 2 13 is the last issues before the series is pulled from my LCS box...already told my provider as much.

I'll keep Ultimates on my pull list.
I'm at least going to read it before deciding it's bad. Same if it wasn't on my pull list... I'd buy individual issues if I was curious, and either add it to my list or stop buying it.
I mean, if it was written by Paris Hilton and drawn by Ashton Kutcher...

I'll give it 3 issues, just because I love the characters.
Loeb would really have to mess it up for me to stop buying it.
If you give someone a silver platter, as Millar has with the ultimates, consider how it would be difficult to ruin. Loeb would have to work at it. I like these characters, so I'm going to read it.
I would have a drink with Tony Stark in an instant. I like all the characters, especially the anarchist-leftist version of Thor. Thats an interesting way to treat a veritable God.

No he really does Jeph Loeb has since his return to Marvel been awful, The Death Of Captain America stuff is just Marvel once again grinding an idea into the ground. Onslaught Reborn? Wolverine still fighting Sabertooth? Loeb has been overhyped as one of the greats whenever people say "Jeph Loeb" they always mention Long Halloween or Dark Victory but they never mention his Marvel stuff, why because at Marvel more of his work is awful then it is good.
As for Ultimates 3? From what I've heard he's said he can't do poltical commentry and the stuff Millar does so he'll simply do Ultimate Avengers. I'll give it a try though but I'm not expecting anything akin to The Ultimates though.

No. Millar's ULTIMATES had a really unique feel and some great characterization (particularly Thor) and Hitch's art was top-notch, well-suited to the "movie adaptation" tone of the book. By comparison, Loeb's been in a terrible rut for years now and the duo of he and McGuinness churned out the sheer awfulness that was SUPERMAN/BATMAN (anyone remember "The Maximums"? ), so there's little reason to think that those two will do any better here, particularly given the low quality of Loeb's most recent Marvel work. And I never cared for Joe Mad's art and personally don't think it's a good fit for this book. At least Millar & Hitch ended their run properly, so we got two full and complete "seasons" of ULTIMATES before Loeb & Co. begin dismantling what they built.

I dunno, I'm not particularly thrilled with what Loeb has revealed so far, and most of what I've read from him has been awful. Mad's art looks cool though. I might give it a try, but won't get my hopes high.
I just wonder don't they just make it an ongoing. I can see why Millar and Hitch's was conceived in seasons, but now we have Ultimates 3 and 4, and probably Ultimates 5 in planning. Why not make it an ongoing now that the status quo and creative team has changed? Meybe even rename it Ultimate Avengers or something, cuz it seems to be heading in that direction. Would be the best solution before we get to Ultimates 19 or something, when it would start getting ridiculous...

I'm not a big Ultimate fan to begin with, however the main reason would be why hype something up that isn't going to happen for over a year. I'm not waiting for something that isn't going to come out that long away and won't be on shedule when it does.
THey annonced the J Scott Campbell thing over a year ago now and it isn't even close to coming out. Now Spidey's ruined... let's face it.

No way. The delays on Ultimates 2 cost them my business. I'll read the reviews and maybe thumb through a few issues in the store and if it looks good then I'll buy the trade paperback. To be honest, the trade paperback is really the only way to go since you can actually read a story without 6 month breaks in between issues.

Not only will I not buy it, given that I dislike both the artist and the writer's work, but I will also actively discourage other people from buying it, given that it will likely be crappy, and because Marvel shows a lack of respect for their fans by condoning the delays of the past volume of the book, which will most likely continue in this version of the Ultimates.

Let's put it this way:
http://www.newsarama.com/NewJoeFridays/NewJoeFridays41.html
Why was Thor talking all Medieval Times-y in Ultimate Power #4?
JQ: While I can't speak too much about this currently, Ultimate Power takes place after Ultimates 2 #13 and the Medieval speak is something Mr. Loeb is adding and explaining in his run, so stay tuned.
Loeb is apparently not even going to try writing 'The Ultumates vol.3', but instead is opting for 'The 616 Avengers in funky new suits'. Why would any fan of the book bother to read this then?
Loeb hasn't been on his game lately for whatever reasons, hopefully this'll be pretty good. Is Ult 3 going to be drawn by Joe Mad or McGuinnes?

I've decided that I'm buying it. Between Bendis' announcement about Ultimate Origins and the upcoming Ultimate Wolverine mini by Loeb and Turner, my interest in the Ultimate Universe is definitely increasing.
Especially since Marvel seems to be ramping up for yet another big event next summer involving the Skrulls. Instead of "Whose Side Are You On?" it will be "Who Can You Trust?"
As if World War Hulk, One More Day, and Messiah Complex weren't enough already! I've already decided that I'm not purchasing a single title other than the ones that I already get just because it ties into some crossover.
On the plus side, though, the Ultimate Universe is definitely looking up. And just in time for those of us suffering from massive event fatigue.:)

Nah. No point. Madureira hasn't drawn anything worth looking at since X-Men and Loeb hasn't written anything worth reading since... drawing a blank, here. As far as McGuinness goes, I'm not even going to dignify that with a response. I wonder who it'll be for volume 6? Chuck Austen and Andy Kubert, perhaps?

SHoulda just waited for the trade for Ultimates 2.
Anyway, learning that ULTIMATES 3 will be drawn by Joe "drop a title just coz I don't feel it anymore" Madureira is good news. THis means I get to save up money for the trade.
Don't get me wrong, I love Joe Mad's art. He's an inspiration to my work. But considering Joe's track record on 'unfinished business' *cough*Battle Chasers and Tri-Lunar*cough*, I'm really not getting any high hopes from this one.
I predict that by issue 6, and month after month of delays, Joe Mad suddenly drops the title coz he wants to start a music production company...
which, 5 months into signing some big name music stars, will fold coz he wants to write a novel...
which, a year after hype is generated from previews of the novel, will not push through coz he wants to draw comics...
which, 8 months after the fact....
Well, you get the picture.. ^_^

I'll buy it, or the trade anyway I've read some stuff by Loeb and the only thing I don't agree with is Wolverine (To many werewolves). Otherwise his stuff with Tim Sale was great and Batman Hush is my favorite Arc. I'm not sure about Joe Mads work, because I haven't seen enough of it, but I won't knock him until I see it. Also I'm just hoping Ultimates come back soon, right now there just floating in the UU, and I'm happy to hear Ed McGuinness is getting done with his stuff in Ultimates 4. Hopefully this series will be monthly.
