This has always bugged me, I know the Imperial Guard are thinnly veiled references to the Legion of Superheroes (who Dave Cockren drew before moving to the X-men) but what about the Starjammers?
They seem familiar but I could never figure out how.

Not really, the only thing that I know that inspired the StarJammers were spaceship wise. Apparently the ship was partially inspired by the Klingon Ships and Star Wars and that Hepzibah is a reference to Miss Mam'Selle Hepzibah which was a antrhomorhpic skunk in the Walt Kelly Strip Pogo.

In the letters pages of Uncanny X-Men, however, fans who wrote in after reading issue 107, saw both a resemblence between the Imperial Guard and the Legion, AND one between the Starjammers and the Fatal Five. The response on the letters page was, on both accounts, something that amounted to "based on WHO?!?" I know they were sarcastic about the Legion, but I'm not sure if the Starjammers were actually supposed to resemble the Fatal Five.

As a big fan of both Legion and X-Men, I completely fail to see any relationship between Starjammers and Fatal Five. Maybe Raza/Tharok because they are both cyborgs, but that's about where the similarities end.

Actually, the Starjammers pre-date Star Wars. It was noted recently that at the time they first appeared that only the paperback novel had came out. So the belief they have any basis in Star Wars is incorrect. It's just one of life's coincidences, much like the dwarves in Phantasm looking like Jawas. :D

When I first read the first issue with the Starjammers in, it instantly struck me that they must be based on the old Poul Andersen stories of David Falkalyn and his team.

Ah shoot, my mistake...I did not mean to put Star Wars...I meant to Put Star Trek. I knew Star Jammers predated, but I just put the wrong highly popular fantasy franchise. I meant Star Trek, my bad....

The lensman reference sounds possible, I've never read the books but I hear they are interesting since they basically started the whole Space Opera genre.
I really don't think it's the Fatal Five, yeah there's a big guy and a cyborg and a girl but really those are vague enough to apply to almost any group. The Imperial Guard are 1 to 1 matches for the LSH so I would think the Jammers jump out just as much to whoever is in on the joke.

The Jammers aren't based on anyone in particular. They're just some space pirates Dave Cockrum came up with.

I think Sikorsky was probably based on Mano. And Cr+eee was obviously based on Validus. They're practically identical twins!

All i know is that the Starjammers could be one of Marvel's hottest properties....it's such a shame they weren't really involved with Anihillation.
