Hey,

Just a quick shout out to those who have inquired to say that the art will be available from www.splashpageart.com in the near future, I don't know precisely when so just check in from time to time.

Sorry to sound like I'm hawking my crap from a suitcase on a shady street corner!

Just a quick chime in of my own, to recommend that people DO purchase Duncan's art! I've talked with Duncan's art rep (Mark Hay) several times and he seems like a very reasonable guy. I have yet to purchase a Duncan Hellboy page, but I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy the experience when I finally get to! :D

Just the 2 issue Flowers For Rhino story and a one shot entitled I Was A Teenage Frog-Man , both great stories but Spidey was really only a minor player. As a kid I really wanted to draw spiderman but these days not so much... all that webbing, what a pain!

I always found drawing Spiderman kind of a thrill (not that I've ever drawn him for a professional comic book mind you), but I can understand how- over time- having to draw that webbing all the time might drive an artist a bit.....buggy (sorry, couldn't resist)! :p

man, that spider-man book had some pretty amazing artwork (besides duncan's, there was some beautiful stuff from eduardo risso, sean phillips, darwyn cooke and jay bone, and ted mckeever, to name a few)...

Well, Duncan when you draw me a spider-man sketch, you don't have to include all the webbing..that sounds fair to me.

Pencils AND inks! Nice. I doubt these will last long with all the original art collectors on this board. Too rich for me but some great pieces in there and since you actually get a two'fer on these, well worth the money. Even the ones without Hellboy look beautiful.

Pickup your pages Duncan Hellboy pages now folks! They are a beautiful thing to behold. I doubt they'll sell out overnight at these prices, but collectors are already making their grabs, so now is the time to get on that bandwagon and help put Duncan's kids through college! :p

Duncan, I noticed that in your original pencils you rule panel borders in blue pencil, but then omit panel borders completely in the finished artwork. I'm curious why you choose to omit panel borders?

BTW, I'm not making a style judgement, Duncan, just asking a process question. Thanks in advance!

Of course, Craig. Not buying a page from him means buying a sketchbook and my missing Perhapanauts issues from you at Heroes...:D

Thats a fair question Neil.

It all comes down to production issues. I had originally intended to hand drw the borders as mike had been doing but i decided it wouldn't fit with the bllons for the lettering. Mike as you know used to hand draw his balloons and they integrate nicely with the art and borders. As I have no idea at the inking stage how Mike will finally scriupt the pages (as you can see from the behind the scenes look at the process Mike is scripting initially as plot) I can't draw in the balloons, plus Clem is lettering on his computer. As sensitive as Clem could be with his placements I decided that crisp borders would best suit crisp ballons, it gives consistency. So there you are, i scan my art into a template and jiggle till it fits confortably, making any adjustments as i go, finally adding the borders and uploading the art files to Dark Horse.

The process does leave the original art a little more unique but that makes it more unique! Seriously, i did consider adding borders afterwards but decided they should stay as they are, production art.

So now you know!

Duncan

Thanks for breaking down your thought process there, Duncan. I'm endlessly fascinated with how artists who have been around a bit are adjusting their artistic process to incorporate computer lettering.

In fact, a friend and I were recently lamenting the loss of hand-lettering and the different changes that are a result of the loss of that beloved art form. To me it adds so much to see that lettering on the board so that you can follow the story if you happen to be fortunate enough to own the art.

I suppose with panel borders, to each artist his/her own, but it's good to know how you break that whole process down. Thanks again!
