So I'm going to spend time with family this weekend, and since its my birthday, I'm fairly certain I'll be able to talk them into watching it with me. I think there are two villains too many, but the other movies were awesome, so...
Plus I almost never get to make these kinds of threads.
Can't wait to see the movie!:D

Hope you like the movie... I've seen the flick yesterday and umm... can't say that it was good as the scone spidey movie. To be honest I can't really say it was good at all. "Fine" is right word here. All the characters are two dimencional, some of their actions are just hard to explain from their point of view (like the one at the end of the movie 0_o ) and all to all the whole movie seems to be too pompatic.

Four of us went last night at midnight to see this and, well, all four of us were disappointed. I really love the Spidey films and I admire Sam Rami for trying to create something more than simple comicbook characters on the big screen but I fear he lost sight with trying to tackle too much in one movie.
Don't get me wrong, the movie was far from horrible and I did enjoy a lot of it immensely. And I will admit my expectations were very high going in. It would have been difficult to introduce the alien costume and not have Venom appear but it felt too rushed, being forced into an already bulging storyline. The movie clocks in at a little less than 2 and a half hours and has a lot of ground to cover and yet I felt myself at times thinking it felt long. And there is one part that is so poorly conceived that it makes the audience groan as the writer jams in a contrived link to get a character to change motivation. Ouch.
Is it worth seeing? I think so but don't expect the same quality as previous episodes. The "birth" of the Sandman is so damn cool and well done it gives you an idea of what this movie could have been like.
This is, of course, just my own opinion and I know some people are loving this movie. Just not me and my friends.
Amongst everything else that happened to my wife and I yesterday, we actually did make it to see SPIDER-MAN 3. While I can't say it was as good as the second movie, I felt it was at least equal to the first. I'm very much a fan of the black costume and of Sandman, so the movie had a lot for me personally that it handled properly. Plus, I love the messages about forgiveness, rage, etc.. I think these are important messages for children. There is so much pointless violence in today's entertainment, and while this movie itself was a little intense, I think it gets the right point across. And I felt they did a good job juggling all the plot threads, keeping the most focus on what was important. I guess because I was never much of a Venom fan, it didn't matter to me that he didn't get as much screen time as other fans hoped for.
Also, with this installment, the SPIDER-MAN movies ascend to being the best super-hero film franchise of all-time. None of the others have been able to maintain this level of quality for this long. This movie might not have been as good as, say, the first Donner Superman, but these three Spider-Man movies combined certainly beat the five Superman films (counting SUPERMAN RETURNS) all together, IMO.
Happy Birthday
I hope you have a great weekend:)

I guess it's up to me then to be the lone opinion of happiness among the naysayers here. I really enjoyed the heck out of it! Maybe it helps that I'm not a huge Spidey fan, not a huge Raimi fan, and didn't really care for the second movie (the most well liked of the three), but I thought this movie was perhaps at least equal to first one. Granted, it did at times feel like Raimi was trying too hard to shoehorn everythng and the kitchen sink into this one, but who am I to stop him? Heck, I had a rollicking good time, and the audience applause at the end of the jam-packed showing I went to, seems to indicate that I wasn't the only one having fun.
I'm seeing at the IMAX tomorrow,cannot wait:D

Nah, you aren't alone, I dug it, too :)
Actually, I feel like because I'm a long-time Spider-Man fan, I was able to appreciate it more. It had many classic elements to it.

I guess you could call me a spidey fan too... It didn't make me look at this movie any diffrent. The motivations of the characters, their behaviour, the whole lack of memory thing, mr. wizz know it all butler who couldn't have told anything earlier, symbiote just be'n there for the sake of "let's do some cool CGI stuff" made this movie incredibly cheesy and flat. Still I have to admit that some moments, mostly humorous were just great to watch. Don't get me wrong, It was a nice way to spend these 2+ hours but I'm still with the "It could have been much better" crowd.

Sandman had the best character arc of the film (then comes Harry).

Hey, great picture Alz!:D Well, I enjoy the movie. I have not much to say but only two hours of pure fun. In my opinion Raimi has done a very good job, it's not simple to do a movie with so much villains. I think we will see Lizard in the next movie:confused:

I respect what you are saying, but I don't agree with the notion that the symbiote was just there for the sake of CG. It was there to play into the themes of pride, revenge, and forgiveness. The symbiote fed off of Spidey's emotions, Peter embraced it, and then had to pay for his mistake. I thought they did an excellent job with it.
It looked great on IMAX! The movie a good...not great:o

I haven't see it yet, but the Hellboarders have been much kinder than the guys and the comic shop and friends who have seen it. All I heard yesterday was that it was very dissappointing...

The fact that this movie isn't getting rave reviews will probably contribute to me liking it when I see the matinee tomorrow. Morna and I are planning to watch Spiderman 2 as a primer tonight.

I thought it was good... I loved the parts (especially Eddie Brock, Gwen, Jameson, Harry, Sandman, birth of Sandman, and the last Venom battle) more than I loved how they fit together.
It was overlong and had too much stuff, but it was all enjoyable. It felt more like a ten-issue arc than a five-issue one, put it that way.

The negative reviews I read here and elsewhere led me to go into this movie with low expectations so I was completely caught off guard when I loved it. I found it to be a very entertaining and fun movie.

Watching Spiderman 3, you'd believe that New York's population mainly consists of young, attractive female models... My favorite line of the movie comes when Spidey gets pummeled by the Sandman, that female reporter comments 'Oooh, the brutality!' in such a cheesy tone - hilarious :D

Man, this movie is really taking a licking by the fans. Honestly I'm kind of shocked by that, as Raimi has turned out great product throughout the whole series. Was #3 the best of the bunch, no, but it certainly isn't the turkey that many are making it out to be. Oh well, at least Gary and I enjoyed it. :)

Regardless, as comic movies go, whether it is bad or not, i will like it, or at least i will like parts of it. I liked parts of Batman and Robin..i liked parts of Superman IV. It's Spider-Man..my favourite comic character.

I enjoyed it a lot.
I'm also finding that the more people hate on it, the more I like it. Honestly, the only bad thing about it is the excess of content... All of which, taken separately, is very enjoyable.

Spoiler:
And why the hell did Parker let the snadman go? I mean he spread havok, he destroyed property, he probably would have killer people if it weren't for spidey and he... is just left to run free??
End of spoiler

Well, like Gary and Neil, i liked it, with a codicil. It's an only ok movie saved by a great final fight. yes, there's way too little Spidey in his own movie and Captain Stacy was a wasted role, but overall, a good show.

The special effects were really cool and the movie wasnt bad by any means ... but ... the first two being as amazing as they are, I just couldnt qualify the third in the same category.
It didnt have much of a story or plot to get attached too, more action and special effects driven for 2 1/2 hours.

well, not quite like that either. Just a disappointing drop off from the first 2 films.

hey everyone :) *waves*
i was disappointed with the film to be honest. there was too much going on, no character development, venom wasn't in it for long enough... i didn't care about anyone, and the most i felt was embarrassment for sandman at what i imagine was meant to be the big emotional denouément. i thought it was executed with a great deal of laziness too - the butler suddenly tells harry what he's apparently known all along? the string of tired movie clichés? the sand sfx recycled from the mummy films [barring the particle accelerator scene]? it could have been brilliant but raimi let this one drop big time.

Most of the critical thinking on this film seems to agree on one of two points.
1. Too much Venom.
2. Not enough Venom.
I find myself liking the movie more and more as people continue to complain about it.

I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't as good as the first two, but if I had never seen the first two, I would have thought it was one of the best things to come out of Hollywood in ages.
And Harry/Goblin Jr. was the best character for me this time around.

You know, I actually found this more watchable than the first film. The green goblin in the first film. Wow. Cringe worthy.

It was...meh. Didn't hate it. Didn't like it nearly so much as the first two. It seemed a bit out-of-control, though: when it was on, it was really on, but when it was off--venom strut.
Bruce Campbell was marvelous, of course.

I actually thought there was just enough Venom. I felt he was used perfectly. The movie focused on the black costume, and how the themes it brought with it affected the characters it came in contact with (Spider-Man, Sandman, Mary Jane, Gwen, and Eddie Brock). Venom was the embodiment of the consequences of all of that. There's no way Venom itself could have had an extended role in the film. It either would have no longer been for children (with all the eating of brains and such), or Venom would have been reduced to a stereotypical, moustache-twirling super-villain hiding out in his lair plotting revenge.
I just think some people set the bar too high for this movie.
