So here we are, approaching the first Saturday in May and Los Angeles is slightly conflicted. The fifth of May is Free Comic Book Day. Some few know this fact. To everyone else, it’s Cinco de Mayo, the last holiday no one has made a slasher flick about.

How do we raise our notice of our little get-together above the fray of beer ads and piñatas full of mini-bar tequila bottles? I believe it’s all in how we frame the event.

Cinco de Mayo itself makes for a brilliant comic book plot. The heroes are a ragtag army, led by a Texas-born general and supplied with a cavalry whose colonel would eventually become President. The villain’s names are Napoleon and Maximilian and their goal is the fall of Mexico City. The climactic battle includes the invading forces being routed by well-timed cattle stampedes brought about by aboriginal men armed with only machetes. It is an amazing fight in which the heroes are outnumbered two to one by better armed forces, but they persevere and prevent the enemy from securing crucial footholds in the region, ensuring the spread of freedom in the west and standing as an example of why you must always keep fighting.

So it is not just another party in competition for your attention with a bevy of beverage joints and personal shindigs but a TOKYOPOP TSUNAMI that we present! Free Comic Book Day means more than just a full shelf of wonderful storytelling, humor, action and genius art. In this small instance it also means karaoke, grilled items for you to consume, perhaps a beverage, yes, wouldn’t be the fifth without a Solo cup, fresh art in the Melt Gallery and quite a few Free Comic Book People!

People like Ben Roman (I Luv Halloween), Felipe Smith (MBQ), Tricia Riley Hale (Grand Theft Galaxy), Anthony Andora (Rhysmyth), Armand Villavert, Jr. (ZAPT!), Jim Pascoe (Undertown), Rikki Simons & Tavisha (Shutterbox). Now I want you to understand that although these brilliant creators are free and friendly they are under no obligation to come home with you no matter how big a box you bring with you. In fact box people or people with boxes should meet at Acapulco down the street. But if you find yourself enjoying a fine Tokyopop volume now and again this would be the day to schedule an appearance of your own!

THERE! Now we’ve really hit upon it! This is your day! Cinco de Mayo belongs to you and there’s nobody who can take it away from you. I want you to show up on Saturday, ready to show the world what Cinco de Mayo can REALLY BE! Ready? Your debut signing and appearance is scheduled for THIS WEEKEND! GET MOVING! You’ll be in competition with JFish and his 16 page Hourly Comic Book and lemme tell you, if you want Cinco de Mayo you’ll have to pry it from JFish’s cold, sweaty, fun fur covered hands.
