I'm sure many here already know this, but I just found out about it. Apparently, a column in the Orange County weekly titled "Ask a Mexican!" has been running since 2004. Here's a link to the article that discusses it (http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSN2836564720070501?feedType=RSS) and here's a link to the actual column (http://www.ocweekly.com/columns/ask-a-mexican/ask-a-mexican/27059/). AaM's regular writer, Gustavo Arellano, says, "It's kind of a Trojan Horse. When you discuss things in a humorous manner you are going to find a much more receptive audience than if I just wrote a straight-ahead editorial browbeating someone into accepting what I believe."
Sounds like good reasoning to me, and it's the thinking that led to some of the best some skits on The Chappelle Show and SNL.
