I want Grant Morrison to write it... hell, let the guy direct it as well, if he's up for it....
who's with me?

I'm with the guy who wrote Eberron.
Needs some actual COMIC talent as opposed to ripping off Richard Donner.

That be hella cool!!!
Why does everyone have so little faith in Singer? The only real problem I saw with the first movie was that it was too character driven and not didn't have enough action in it, (although I still absolutely loved it, and find myself loving it more now than I did when I first saw it).
However, he did the same thing with the X-Men franchise, spent the first movie developing the characters, and got criticized for it, and then delievered a blockbuster action flick in the second while raising the gross it brought in substantially. So why no faith?

That'd rock. I was always sad that the screenplay he sold several years ago "Sleepless Knights" was never produced.

For me, it's because I saw Superman Returns. :p

Well, It wasn't my intent to turn this into a "why superman returns sucks" thread, or why Singer or even Donner for that matter, aint that hot. I think there's already enough of that talk floating around.
Any way, to answer YOUR question, the reason why I have no faith, is that I read comics. I read comics like All Star Superman, so when I see films like Superman Returns, I see an inferior product, with a whole heap of absolutely wasted potential. Singer was in the right place at the right time so he gets to make big films. Grant Morrison on the other hand is actually very clever, very talented and extremely entertaining.
So, back to MY question... who's with me?
Or (besides Singer), who else do people think should make the next superman film?
Maybe Borat should do it?

I'm with yer. I don't think he should direct it though.
But I'm interested in seeing Singer's sequel.

Perhaps Alfonso Cuaron.

What has morrison done that would make people think he was a good screenwriter? I mean, as far as I know he did one of the lawnmower man movies, which I have not seen. Has he done anything that would make him seem like a good choice to write any movie? Dont get me wrong, I love his comics, I'm just saying that they are very different mediums and just because he is good at one he may not be good at the other. I certainly dont want to see another Sin City.

I dunno. I'd go with Mark Waid. If not writing it, get him on as a consultant. Dear Rao, Superman Returns was a terrible adaptation of the comics. It was as if no one working on the film read a single one and only had seen the old Donner film.

For me it's because I don't believe in the "let's use an entire first movie to develop characters for a sequel" thing. You have a great character in Superman, you have him making a triumphant return, yet the movie becomes more about the messianic subtext and homages to the original film than the actual goings-on in the film people are currently watching. Nothing wrong with subtext so long as it doesn't overtake the stuff on the surface; there's nothing wrong with character development so long as it doesn't detract or deaden the action of the film; and there's nothing wrong with homages so long as the movie doesn't just feel like a reheat of the thing it's paying homage to.

Hmmm... Who else should helm a Superman movie? Kooky idea: CG animated movie directed by Brad Bird, story by Grant Morrison and Mark Waid, screenplay by Frank Darabont and Lawrence Kasdan. If live action, maybe directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Zemeckis would be cool. I could see him pulling off the good balance of fantasy and character development. Though I did like Singer's take on the whole thing.

I guess my beef with Singer's take is the whole movie just felt like a rehash of the Donner movie rather than a movie in and of itself. It had its moments, but it felt to me like a missed opportunity.
EDIT: And yeah, Zemeckis seems like he'd strike a good balance between the fun fantasy elements of Superman and the more serious subtext of Superman.

i loved superman returns simply cause im a huge superman fan, it could have been the worst movie on the planet and i'd still say it rocked.
But for the sequal, to mr. singer.....2 words.........Richard Donner

Fair enough, and I apologize to the thread starter for derailing the topic a little bit, and I'll just answer the question to help get the thread back on track, if not Singer, then I'd say Mark Waid, becuase he's responsible for the masterpiece that is Kingdom Come :D

I haven't read Kingdom Come since it first came out, but I do remember really enjoying it... so I think I could live with a Mark Waid superman film.

I wonder how good a Grant Morrison Superman story would be if he had to work within a movie budget as opposed to the unlimited budget of a comic book story.
Donner has said that he would not make another Superman movie. And considering the first movie is on this giant pedestal, and the high expectations that would come with the job, I don't blame him. Let him keep working with Johns on Action Comics and give him artists that can do a monthly book.
I too was a little disappointed by Superman Returns for various reasons. But, considering what Singer did between the first 2 X-Men movies, I'll give him another chance. Even he has said that this next one will have more action. I just hope they leave the religious stuff out of it next time.

Morrison or Waid, I'd be happy with either so long as they weren't strapped with the problems established in Superman Returns. I just want a brand new, completely original movie, one with no ties to any of its predecessors, be they the original films, Smallville, or anything else in between. How about just using the comics for inspiration instead?
That said, Donner's first effort was great, and remains as such to this day, but it's time to move on. I'm sick of people acting like it's so perfect that it would be sacrilege to start over from the ground up. Thank God Nolan and Goyer didn't have that mindset in regards to Burton's Batman.

Totally agree with the original movie with comics as inspiration. Sometimes its time for a complete reboot...Marvel seems to realise this with Hulk... hope DC learns from it.

i dont want superman eating eyeballs. or falling into dreamworlds where he has to kill his cousin.
so as long as grant morrison is on a leash, i'd be ok.
i just checked and grant morrison's starmeter on IMDB is down a massive 29%.
he better step it up!

If i'm misunderstanding you with my reply let me know:
Anyways they're rebooting the Hulk movie because it was plain BAD. The basis for a good story was there. It was just botched up.
As for SR, I thought it was a fantastic movie that explored a lot of elements of Superman's character and all. I didn't really fully understand the significance of the kid but if he's truly Clark/Superman's son that'd be a great dynamic. If Singer is unencumbered I could see a 3rd film where the kid is fully grown (or at least in his teens) and fighting against Supes.
As for comics writers penning a screenplay, It could work but I don't know sometimes the little things that makes a comic very good is lost in translation when put to film. If there's one guy who's done Superman that could do a good script IMO it would be Geoff Johns.

Yet to read All star superman, but i really wonder what that will be like. Character driven stuff isnt really Morrisons bag, he's more of a plot driven guy. And for me Superman has to be character driven. So i cant really say what he's screenplay might look like
That being said i find Superman returns to be the best of the franchise.
Never got the hate.
