Damn! I was looking forward to it.
What should have been an easy project turned out to be a monster but Mike is determined that it be done right. He and Scott ended up doing much more than editing. Nobody wants an "on time" but crappy result.

Agreed...but it should be a hardcover.

I've had my share of those and am always willing to wait for the quality stuff. Besides, it would be difficult to know where to place the cutoff point as Hellboy's world continues to evolve with every publication.

I second that motion...

I second that motion...Yes. And the same size as graphic novels, not smaller as it looks to be now.

Thank you Tad. I admit, everytime the publication date is pushed back I get even more jazzed, knowing this companion is going to be more amazing then I could ever imagine

I agree with the hardcover idea. And matching the size of the trades too.

+1,000,000. I don't like the trend towards manga-sized TPB's. I prefer *oversized* books! :D
yeah...i would have loved this to be a hardcover also;)

They should make it the same size as the art of Hellboy book. :D

Hmmm. Wonder if they did that to coincide with the movie release. Oh well. I can get it for my Birthday at least (hopefully).

Truly no offense meant to the powers that be involved with this laborious project, but it's starting to seem a bit like vaporware.
I'm sure once the book actually ships we'll all love the thing, and not for one second utter a discouraging word, but right now that day seems an awful long ways away.

This isn't even funny anymore. When was the first time it was in Previews? June 2006? I ordered it back then and paid for it. I hope the shop is still there when the book is finally out...
And if it takes so much time, they REALLY shoud change the format to the size of comics paperbacks.

The irony is I think Scott (or someone) said they were doing this book to provide some Hellboy goodness since Darkness Calls was getting delayed by the change of artists.

We've got a say'n round here:
"He who loves, will wait"
But for how long i wonder...
HHHMMMMmmmmmmm. Wow that long.:( I will be estatic when it comes out with excitement either way.:D I hope this won't be limited to a certain amount.
I did pre order this also, I didn't pay yet, but if I choose to put this away for later I want there to be enough so I don't have to wait longer if I take it off of my pre order list. I get very dissapointed when I hear I have to wait longer.
Don't have a choice but I don't like it.

Mea culpa. You have every right to be frustrated. I am, too. I've been working on this book literally since before I started at Dark Horse. And Scott, Mike, and other folks have been wrestling with it even longer. Believe me when I say that we are very anxious to see it finished!
As Tad mentioned on the previous page, The Companion has hit one roadblock after another. It's an ongoing struggle, because the later it gets, the more Hellboy universe comics have come out, and the more we have to update the information in the bibliography / timeline / character bios. The Companion is an enormous--and enormously collaborative--project, which makes every revision--and the checking and cross-referencing it involves--a cripplingly complicated process. When we started this book, we had no idea how involved it would be; along the way, pretty much everything that could go wrong--both in and out of our control--did,
We pushed the release date to May 2008 partly to coincide with the movie, and partly because we wanted something we were *sure* we could hit, not just a brief delay through which we'd be scrambling to throw revisions together. At this point, we know *exactly* what's coming out between now and then comics-wise, and we have enough time to make sure that the book is--and stays--on track.
Thank you for your patience. I know waiting for it hasn't been a picnic. But I have every reason to believe that it'll be out in May, hopefully with enough additional detail and quality to make up for the lost time.

Well, I say no worries. We haven't had a companion book up to this point. When it comes out it will be full of quality, up-to-date information, beautiful pictures, and just tons and tons of Hellboy/BPRD goodness.
When we're all in our 70's (some are closer than others but I'm going with an average here) the wait will seem like a drop in the bucket.
Bucket? It's bouquet.

Please make this book over sized if not regular sized. Its so hard to pour over a digest sized book. And I know already that I'll be captavated with this read. Especially for the endless reference.

Hey Rachel,
Will there be any movie-related material in the Companion?

Hey Rachel,
Will there be any movie-related material in the Companion?
Aside from perhaps a brief mention in the introduction or somesuch, probably not--the continuity of the comics is complicated enough without diving into the alternate continuity of the movies...

Will this be strictly a soft cover release or is there a chance we can see this in hardcover? Not sure if that's been answered so I apologize in advance if it has :)

One thing being a Mignola fan teaches you is to be patient. I know I'll buy it (along with any subsequent revisions or updates ) whether it's in 2008 or 2018. Basically, 2 tears in a bucket...
And Rachel, could you possibly be any more helpful and Janey-on-the-spot? :D

I'd prefer a hardcover too.
And I'm glad the movies aren't going to be referenced much. As much as I love Hellboy, I didn't care for the movie at all.

Hey Rachel--another question. Are any of the crossovers considered canon? Ghost/Savage Dragon/Painkiller Jane/Batman? I'm guessing no, but I thought I'd ask.

No. They'll be listed in the bibliography / checklist, but they won't come up in the timeline or character bios.

So the companion's going to be late. Again. Fine! I'm sure it will be great when it does come out. How long did we wait for Darkness Calls? And look how good THAT'S turned out!
As Hellboy fans we're used to waiting, and, frankly, right now I feel the least need ever to complain about it! Consider that we've actually had NEW HELLBOY PRODUCT (MIGNOLA product, no less!) on the shelf for the past three weeks in a row! (Darkness Calls 4, Lobster Johnson 1, and today's double-whammy of BPRD and The Troll Witch with that brand new Mignola/Russell story!). I'd be happy with one comic a month. With 3+, I'm ecstatic!
Thank you, Rachel et all, for the plethora of Hellboy-related goodness. Take your time with the Companion if you need it; you have no need to apologize. (I, however, probably do, for coming off as such a sanctimonious kiss-ass... Sorry!)
