Does anyone know what the story is with The Goon one-shot, Satan's Sadomizing Baby? Darkhorse.com had it listed as being released this week, but none of my shops have it. Can someone please shed some light on this?

From Eric himself...
Satan's Baby a week late due to printer
Due to the printer being over run by printing for free comic day, Satan's Baby will be a week late. Sorry... but don't blame me. Stop throwing things.

As long as we're off topic on The Goon, it seems like a good place to mention a recent Goon sighting. I just saw an early screening of Superbad (the new Seth Rogan/Judd Apatow movie that's not Knocked Up coming out this summer) and the main character (Arrested Development's George-Michael) has Goon stuff all over his bedroom, including posters and covers and pages. I thought that was neat. The movie, by the way, was great. The best teen movie since the Eighties. I can't wait to see it again!

I doubt it's just Dark Horse, but I echo your concern. Try to keep in mind also that FCBD helps raise awareness of the comic medium, and- if the comic shops I frequent are any indication- helps get more kids through the door. I see kids as the future of this medium, so we definitely need to get them buying comics if we're to survive long into the future.

That and making sure those pesky rugrats can afford the comics we hope they'll buy. With books now running $3-5, the comics business could price themselves out of business one day. I just don't see young kids being able to afford dropping $20 a week to keep track of all their favorite titles (if they were into X-men they could never stay current). Hell, I can't even do that!
Oops... "OT:Goon/OT:FCBD/OT:Future of comics/OT:Comicbook prices"
Goon? Sweet, I love that comic! Can't wait for the next issue!

FCBD is a bust around here, the retailers that do participate end up with piles of left overs.

I hear ya. Should be this week.
BTW RealKirk, I agree that the price of comics is kind of out of the price range of the average kids allowance. However, hopefully in the future (when many comics are available through digital media) comics will be affordable for the average kid.

How many folks actually read their comics digitally? Excepting when they have no other choice.

In the same way that kids are willing to accept the crappy sound quality of over-compressed MP3s and the crappy picture and sound quality of pirated DVDs they are apparently also willing to accept digital comics. The Beat did an informal poll a while back and the young folk will gladly read stuff in digital form.
They need to get the hell off my lawn.

BTW I got to meet Eric Powell at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (http://www.calgaryexpo.com/) yesterday and he is a gentleman and a prince. I got a little sketch of Franky telling me off in my Rough Stuff and his sketchbook from last year (which I don't have since I wasn't at SDCC). He seemed to have a steady and appreciative crowd.
I hope the con was worthwhile for him. I think it went all right—no fire marshall incidents or similar (at least not by the time I left at 2:30)—but it could have been more finely tuned in places. There were some second year growing pains. I was a volunteer, so my experience was mostly of the inner workings and I didn't really get to absorb the con itself, since I got kind of sick of it by the afternoon. It was very well attended. Although it might be less than a tenth of the floorspace of SDCC, the crowd density was SDCC-like in spots. I'm sure it matched or exceeded Emerald City which had 7,700 attendees.

I probably saw you around, Maija, as I was there all day yesterday. The spikey-haired blonde guy in the white shirt and leaf-green sweater.
Eric was, to my total shock, only busy part of the time. I got him to sign a book for me (complete with a little Goon sketch) and we had a nice chat about how awesome The Goon is. I also bought both of his sketchbooks, which are great. I pimped them out quite a bit, and my friend Dave got the last one. Eric was also selling numbered prints, which seemed to sell pretty well.
I came back later, and he was still only somewhat-busy, so I brought out my paper (I always bring some and he had none) and managed to get a Buzzard sketch.
Then, a couple of hours later, I came back again and got him to take a look at my mini-comic, Archie Snow (http://myspace.com/kellytindall), and critique my pages. I could tell he wasn't too comfortable doing the critic thing, but he seemed to dig my work and that was that.
He seems like a really gracious and cheerful fellow. I hope he comes back.
P.S. Maija, who were you? The only girl volunteer I remember was the brunette who was running the animation panel.

Thanks for the report, Maija! Yeah, Eric is quite the cool guy. I hope to touch base with him at SDCC this year.

Man, Calgary's con seems like it's getting a whole lot bigger..wasn't Mr Powell doing a Marvel book of some kind?

Eric's doing Action Comics with Geoff Johns, with writing contributions by Richard Donner. It's a Bizarro story, of course.
EDIT: Got my sketch scanned. Awesome!

Not sure if anyone has already posted this but here's some cool art for Powell's Action Comics.

Probably I saw you, but I saw lots of folks and don't remember much of it! I was helping with exhibitor and guest registration until about 11AM and then I was running around the floor into the afternoon. I was the redhead with the orange backpack full of bottles of water. Later on I didn't have my red volunteer t-shirt on and I was wearing a light blue tee.
Yeah, Eric wasn't lined up like, say, Humberto Ramos or Bruce Timm, but it seemed to be steady. I think folks are still only just catching on to the Goon and Eric's talent. Hopefully the Bizarro gig will introduce him to more people.
That Buzzard sketch is fantastic. I love the Buzzard.

Yes! and I do too!
It was his first visit to Canada but he made mention of visiting again.

Perfect opportunity to donate comics to the local children's hospital or library or the like? I dunno. That could be another way to introduce readers :)
I am really looking forward to Powell's Superman, though I can't wait til he's back on Goon.
And we don't get any of these fantabulous conventions over here in Australia. You guys make me jelous :'(

I saw one of the funniest movies of 2007 today - Superbad (http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/superbad/, http://www.areyousuperbad.com/). One of the main characters has many Goon posters and pictures on his wall...
