There's no getting around it anymore. I seriously need to replace my comic boxes, especially the ten wooden ones I've been carting around since the 1970s. I'd like to switch to short boxes to make it easier for the folks around me, not all of whom are gifted with prodigious upper body strength, to get to stuff in the vault aka my office closet. I'm going to need at least 20.

So can anyone recommend a dealer? I want the best box for the least outlay.

How about these DrawerBoxes? Here's a comprehensive review that looks at cost, efficiency and durability:

If I were starting fresh, as you seem to want to do, this is the way I would go.

Well, those certainly aren't going to be the least outlay. And they've always looked a little shoddy to me.

I've ordered short comic boxes from Bags Unlimited and the2buds.com . The ones from 2 buds are cheaper and a little bit shorter (maybe an inch). The quality seems about the same.

The comprehensiveness of this review gives me the feeling that the people at Comicbase have a lot of time on their hands.

If you like the concept, you can check out http://bcwsupplies.com - their version is cheaper. I haven't ordered yet, so I can't speak to quality, though.

I like that you can use your own (existing) short boxes with these, or if you order new ones with the sleeve, and it's still cheaper than the original drawer boxes. It looks like the drawer boxes might be engineered a little better, e.g. the reinforcement on the handle that you pull it out with, but if I use these for the boxes that I don't go in and out of every week, it shouldn't be a problem. I'll definitely order a few of these and give them a try.

I have the Drawer Boxes and I really like them. Note, however, that my cat likes them even more. (You still have one, right?) And they do require a bit of a tug to open.

I have found that the boxes that ship computer paper inside are almost the right size for comic books standing on end, just like half size comic boxes. I am finding half size comic boxes are running about $5.00 here in SE Ohio at comic shops, sold one at a time. However, 20 years ago, I was getting them wholesale from the Diamon distributor in Detroit for about $2.00 each.

I would recommend approaching your LCBS and telling them you want to advance order two bundles of collapsed comic boxes (or half size boxes) and that you'll take them all, still banded together. If they give you a reduced price, you might be able to get them at or near cost, since all they really have to do is order and ship them. You pick them up at the shop, and assemble them yourself. If they really value you as a customer, they might order yours along with their next order for the shop...and then sell them to you at cost to earn your loyalty! They KNOW you're a serious comic book fan...and that you can interest, capacity and the capital to invest in their hobby. Sort of a win-win order. Just make sure you're talking to the owner or senior manager... not a part-time clerk who has no authority to deal. Cause those guys will mark up each and every box to make their commission or to sell at the full retail price, like they've been told!

The house thing is a bit much on my budget but BCW's price of 10 short boxes @ $2.75 each is on target. I'm still gonna do some comparison shopping but that's an excellent starting place. Thanks, guys!
