I'm planning on buying this set, but I thought I'd ask first.

How good is it? Is it censored? What about image and sound quality?

I read that ADV's version is censored AND dubbed, so AnimEigo's version looks like the better option.

Opinions?

Get Animeigo's version. I have it, and highly recommend it. I beileve the video quality is even superior to ADV's version as well. The Animeigo version is subtitled in english only. Its a treat to actually see Macross in its pure form.

Which version is newer?

All I know is the ADV Macross with Mari Iijama doing both the English and Japanese voice for Minmey.

Thanx for the replies people.

But is the AnimEigo version censored in any way?

BTW, I think the ADV version is the older one.

You have it a bit mixed up.

ADV first licensed Robotech, the edited, dubbed version of Macross that aired on American tv in the 80s.

Animeigo was the first company to release the original, uncut Macross on DVD, in a subtitles-only release. It's now out of print.

ADV now has the rights to the original Macross series. They have now released it on DVD, uncensored, with a new, uncut English dub that features Mari Ijiima reprising her role as Minmay.

I'm almost positive the Animego one is older. ADV redid it and replaced some subtitles here and there. Animego's subs included a few Star Trek references or some such. I have the Animego one and it ROCKS. I don't believe either were censored or edited in any way. It has been a while since I watched my set, but it is pretty awesome.

I remember a bunch of specific points of comparison being made on the animeondvd.com forums when the ADV ones came out. More info

In December 2001, AnimEigo released The Super Dimension Fortress Macross DVD box set. It was the first complete, unedited English release for Macross, containing unedited English-subtitled video footage with no English dubbing. The nine DVDs in this set were re-released in three smaller 3-disc boxes and later in one final new artbox.

In the summer of 2005, ADV Films announced that they would be releasing an English dubbing of Macross on January 10, 2006. This is the first complete, unedited English dubbing for Macross. Mari Iijima, the Japanese voice of Minmay, plays the same role in the English dub. She is the second Japanese voice talent to dub the same character in both Japanese and English.

Thanx for the info people.

www.robotech.com is selling the AnimEigo set, so I'm getting it as soon as some extra money lands in my pocket.

As others have pointed out the Animeigo version is in fact older. It doesn't have a english dub but is unedited. Animeigo cleaned up alot of the anime when they released their set. If you need any information on macross what so ever check out Macrossworld and the Macross Compendium. I'm a huge macross fan and a member at macrossworld. The members there are very informative. I also recommend Macross Zero, Macross DYRL and Macross Plus if you haven't seen them. Macross Zero takes place right before Space War I and shortly after the Macross crash lands on the South Ataria Islands. You get to see a younger Roy Focker kicking arse.

BTW Big west has plans to release a new Macross series in the near future.

Huh?! A new Macross series?!?!?!?!?!?!

Can you give me a link in which I can read more about this?

And thanx for the info.

I'm getting the AnimEigo version. Thanx everyone for your input.

Hi, another owner of the Animeigo set here!

Just wanted to chime in that it's great. They did a beautiful job remastering it. Like others have already mentioned, it is completely uncut, but does not have an English dub track.

I don't regret buying it when it first came out for a second. Hope you enjoy it!

I miss the good old days

Why is that?

There isn't much info on the new series at the moment.

Damn... That's too bad. We'll have to wait.

Actually, the ADV version of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross is unedited and included both subs and a dub. You must have it confused with their Robotech releases, which are dubbed/edited. They also released sub only boxsets of Genesis Climber Mospeada and SuperDimensional Calvary Southern Cross.

Animeigo's DVD's came several years before ADV's, around the same time ADV was releasing their initial Robotech DVD's. They're excellent, with great translating, footnotes in index cards, and a gorgeous new transfer that Animeigo spent years creating that surpasses the japanese release of the series. When Animeigo lost the rights to the series, ADV used this transfer to make their new Macross dvd's.

So basically, ADV and Animeigo's releases are the same, it's just that one has a dub, and a slightly different [but still accurate] sub translation. I'd get whichever you get the best deal on.

PS-if you want Robotech, the Remastered boxsets use the Animeigo print of Macross, and ADV's touched up verisons of the other series from their subbed boxsets, with the film re-edited to match the original editing on Robotech, with english and spanish language tracks.

Thanx for the very informative post, Paploo.

I think I read that edited/censored stufff in an Amazon.com customer review of the ADV version of Macross.
