If you're more into classic comics, than the Spider-Man Essentials are the way to go. 500 pages in B&W for $16 of some great Silver Age stories. And if you see them in book stores, grab the paperback Spider-Man Masterworks. If current comics are more your bag, I'd get the first three MK Spider-Man trades and the JMS Amazing run, see if it's your cup of tea. The Ultimate Spider-Man trades are great reads as well.

I have to agree with the essential tpb's, and the mk millar's run. I also enjoyed the new venom trade that came out called spiderman birth of venom. YOu should also check out the new hardcover versions of Kraven's Last Hunt and the Death of the Stacys. Also check out Jeph Loeb's Spiderman: Blue, its a very good read.

Stay away from Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman though, but Ultimate Spiderman is one of the funnest spiderman stories out there, I highly recommend Ultimate Spiderman

These are the ones that I have:

Amazing Spider-Man Masterworks Vol. 1 - Stan Lee and Steve Ditko perfection!

Birth of Venom - A great collection featuring the early issues of the very underrated Defalco and Frenz era, as well as Web of Spider-Man #1 and the Michelinie/McFarlane Venom issues.

The Death of Jean DeWolff (out of print) One of the best!

Kraven's Last Hunt - Dematties and Zeck produced what is probably considered the Spidey story that transcends time better than any.

Todd McFarlane Spider-Man vol 1-3 - These are the great David Michelinie written issues that were drawn by Todd, which are my personal favorite Spider-Man stories.

Invasion of the Spider Slayers (out of print) - One of the great Spider-Man romps of all time, and needs a new printing. This was where Bagley made his star, and Michelinie delivered as always.

Hobgoblin Lives (out of print) - Roger Stern and Ron Frenz delivered a classic.

Coming Home - The initial 6 part JMS/Romita Jr. story featuring Ezekiel and Morlun.

Out of the ones out now and that I have:

Spider-Man: Birth of Venom
Spider-Man: Death of the Stacy's Premier Hardcover
Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt

These are all totally worth it. The coloring is remastered and they all look beautiful, especially in their various formats. There are also two very worthwhile books coming out this week as well:

Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus HC (out this week)
Spider-Man Visionaries Roger Stern Vol 1 TP

haha

while i do read ign, i just don't like time travel in my comic books. If he's new to spiderman I thought that jumping into the middle of a time travel fueled arc might not be the best thing for him

I'd suggest Kraven's Last Hunt as others already have. I'd also like to suggest The Son of the Goblin, especially with the movie coming up next week.
