British singer Bryan Ferry apologized on Monday for remarks he made in an interview with a German newspaper in which he praised Nazi iconography as "just amazing" and "really beautiful."
The 61-year-old lead singer of Roxy Music told Germany's Welt Am Sonntag newspaper last month: "The way that the Nazis staged themselves and presented themselves, my Lord!

...Jewish leaders in Britain, some of whom had condemned Ferry's comments and questioned whether he should be dropped by the Marks & Spencer retail chain that employs him as a model....

Now come on. Just...come....on!

And he's modelling at 61? Wow.

I agree with Bryan Ferry.

And I don't apologize for it.

I agree with Mr. Ferry's view on the iconography: they way they staged and presented themselves was brilliant. One can admire their production values and graphic design without admiring other things they did.

For those of us who enjoy the graphic arts and comics, Nazi era propaganda and art would naturally be attractive. The bold colors, the heroic poses, the creative use of typeface were employed to appeal to the "volk".

It's not "high art" but it is appealing.

Wonder if someone mentioned they liked Wagner if they'd have to apologize for it?

Too broad. And yet, I'm sure someone would feel the need to connect the two.

Hell, as I mentioned in another thread, I'm Jewish and lost family in the Holocaust and I think the Nazi's had an interesting design sense. Heck, I know lots of Jewish gals who where Nazi-esque leather boots. It's almost a trend.

I think if this had been in the paper any day other than the day after Holocaust Rememberance Day it would have been ignored (well, except maybe on the day itself).

You sure it's not your ass or perhaps your breath blowing back in your face?

I have to agree though, recognizing the fact that they were effecient propoganda machines does not signify you agree with their beliefs.

Isn't it fairly easy to be an efficient propoganda machine when you murder those that disagree with you? Just sayin'.

That's actually over simplifying.

They Nazi's didn't start out as thugs, just killing everyone. They very, very carefully manipulated public opinion. Then, when they did start killing, people were all for it.

The fact is, the Nazis had some of the best marketing people in the world, in a way. They sold their philosophy to thousands.

Including a future King of England.

But then again, they're all German anyway.

Exactly. Hitler managed to get millions of people to buy into his crap before they ever even began to move on those ideals. THAT is effecient, he didn't recruit out of fear of death, but was actually able to convince people genocide was a good idea.

Though he did do a fair amount of his recruiting at drinking rallies.

Sometimes, despite the product or philosophy, an attractive ad is an attractive ad.

I know. But then my powers of sarcasm would be useless.

At least he didn't do what David Bowie did in the 70's and turn up at Victoria Station throwing around Nazi salutes.

His son tried to attack Tony Blair a few years back.

I don't know what's worse. Ferry praising their architecture and sense of design or the American government employing their scientists.

There's actually some debate over that. Every photo I've seen of the matter doesn't show a straightforward Nazi salute, but his palm raised up from his outstretched arm as though he was waving. Granted I didn't help that he had described Hitler as the first rock star and stated he adored fascism in recent interviews.

Interestingly enough after the furor over this Bowie soon checked himself into rehab for his cocaine addiction.
