For me it's Jim Aparo, Norm Breyfogle, Neal Adams, and Andy Kubert.

Also, I love the artist who was doing Detective in the 90's, I'm having a brain fart right now, and can't think of his name.

Jim Aparo was the artist on Batman when I started collecting in 92, and so for sentimental reasons he's my fave, but for so many other reasons aswell.

He had that great traditional Batman look, somewhat in the style of Neal Adams.

Jim's Gotham was so cool, at times the city skyline looked like the gothic style from Batman the movie (1989).

And as for Norm his style is so many things, it's serious, yet cartoony, and just so awesome. His artwork just flows. Batman's cape always looked so cool when he drew it, kind of like it was alive.

Obviously Neal Adams is alot of people's fave. It was just superb. Bringing Batman back to his dark roots along with Denny O'neil.

The guy from Detective who I can't remember his name, had a nice classic look, for some reason it reminds me of Adam West at times, but it doesn't really look like him.

There's also another artist from Detective in the 90's I liked but I can't remember his name right now either. He did a story in 92 I think it was with The Cluemaster, and he and his henchmen were dressed up like Robinhood and his merry men.

There's also one of the artists from the late 60's when they were starting to clean it up, but I don't know his name, but I really like him. His style was a bit more serious compared to what had previously been done, and it was just cool.

And ofcourse I would not leave out Bob Kane. Batman's Daddy, 'nuff said.

I love how he first drew him with the long ears, spread out a bit, so dark and gothic.

Norm Breyfogle. He really used the shadowy aspect of Batman well and he captured many of the romantic elements of the character.

Neal Adams is my all time fav. Of today's artists I think Michael turner draws a great Batman but I don't think he's strong enough of a superhero artist to be able to do a Batman title properly...unless Batman investigated a Sping Break Bikini contest. I think Mark Silvestri has the style to do a great Batman.

I think draws a newspaper strip. Like Rex Morgan or something.

Matt Wagner, Frank Miller*, and Darywn Cooke are my favorite Bat artists. And what do you know they are pretty damn fine Batman writers too.

*Yes I think DK2 is awesome... All Star Batman and Robin not so much.

I love the work Simon Bisley and Jim Murray did on the Batman/Judge Dredd crossovers.

Jim Lee's art for Hush is one of my favourites, as is Dave McKean's art for Arkham Asylum.

Jim Lee.
No doubt about it.
I liked Eduardo Risso's work on the Broken City arc too.

Dave McKean still wins for his work on Arkham.

Jock for covers.

And of course, I love all the classic guys too.

I grew up on Aparo, so he's got my nostalgia vote. Adams made Batman darker and cooler than anyone else, so he's got my classic depiction vote. Lee just blew me away on All-Star, even while his art didn't match the plot at all, so he gets my drool vote.

And ofcourse I would not leave out Bob Kane. Batman's Daddy, 'nuff said.

I love how he first drew him with the long ears, spread out a bit, so dark and gothic.

Don't forgot to give props to Bill Finger, without whom Bob Kane could not have produced this version of Batman.

I loved Bolland's Batman in The Killing Joke, Miller's in DKR, Risso's in Broken City (felt it was heavily influenced by Miller though), and definitely Tim Sale. Jim Lee ain't that bad either!

Neal Adams, Marshall Rogers, & Jim Aparo are my favorites. Haven't really seen a great Batman artist in awhile.

Got to give honorable mentions to Gene Colan, Don Newton, & Irv Novick. Colan particularly with Klaus Janson as inker was outstanding. Didn't like him much as a kid but really like his work now. Newton was the man from the late 70's thru mid 80's.

For me it would be Marshall Rogers, Neal Adams, Irv Novick, Ernie Chua, Don Newton, Jim Aparo.

I absolutely love Tim Sale's style for Batman, just great stuff. And I love his Two-Face also.

Risso's art for Batman was beautiful.

Number one in my book is Alex Ross. After that, give me Neal Adams, Kelly Jones, Mike Mignola, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Matt Wagner or Tim Sale (and I know I'm forgeting a bunch) in no particular order.

Jim Aparo is the Batman artist I grew up with. He'd get my #1 vote. Marshall Rogers, Neal Adams, Matt Wagner and Aan Davis also rank highly. I also loved Kelly Jones' stylised Batman. Oh, and Bill Sienkiewicz.

I'll say Neal Adams (cannot wait for the Batman project with Frank Miller), Jim Aparo, David Mazzuchelli, Graham Nolan, and Jim Lee and Andy Kubert recently were very good.

I absolutely adore Alex Ross' work as an artist, but I don't feel his style fits with Batman at all.

David Mazzucchelli and Alex Toth are by far the best!

When did Alex Toth ever draw Batman, just out of curiosity?

To me, the best artist to tackle the Dark Knight is Tim Sale. He draws Batman like he's supposed to be: a 1930s pulp story hero. His art feels like a James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart movie. You're just waiting for the Dame to breeze into his life, and totally muck up stuff.

However, my other favorites are:

Frank Miller - both DKR AND DKSA. I like DKSA. It pissed everyone off, and it made me like it even more.

David Mazuchelli - Clean, crisp art. Great guy too.

Neal Adams - Defined the character for a generation of fans.

Hmm, there was at least one Super Friends cover that I remember. Not sure if he ever did more than that or not.

Yeah, Alex Toth is good stuff. Bruce Timm and Darwyn Cooke are both big fans of his, and it shows in their art.

Jim Lee's Batman has gotten really good. His Batman actually looks much, much better in All Star than it did during Hush. The problem is, we have only had four issues in like, 3 years. THAT is the reason Jim Lee is not one of my personal favorites. The guy is very good, and he is easily one of the top guys in the business, but he just can't handle the work load of guys like the Kuberts or Romita, Jr. Jim Lee is late on his books because DC is making exactly the same mistake that Marvel did when it comes to Jim Lee: the realize how popular he is, so they have him do as much as possible, while still having him on monthly books. If they like his art so much for promos, make him the art director for DC and be done with it. He can still do covers, and fans won't be left waiting. If they want him to draw books, quit giving him too much other stuff to do. He's actually not that slow, he just can't handle more than one book a month. (Now, Bryan Hitch, Frank Quitely, & Arthur Adams... those guys are ****ing slow.)

Jim Lee is very good, and I really like his art when it comes to action storytelling. He sucks at drawing emotions, and he doesn't do very well with casual scenes either. The Hush scenes that fell flat for me were the ones inside of the Daily Planet. Instead of seeing a milk-toast farm boy with glasses, Clark Kent looked like Superman in a suit. Clark Kent can't look like Superman in a suit, because people would figure it out. He can't look like a bodybuilder. Superman shouldn't have a muscle definition like Batman does, because Superman doesn't need to work out. And, realistically speaking, how the hell COULD he work out? Bench pressing the Moon? He should look like an average guy who is physically active, not Mr. Olympus.

Like I said, Jim Lee is really good at action scenes, but his other work isn't nearly as impressive. We don't see it very often because most writers take that into consideration and play to Jim's strengths: tension, fight scenes, and sexy women.

Guys like Tim Sale, Neal Adams, and David Mazuchelli are equally good at drawing a conversation as they are at drawing a kick-ass fight scene.

Long story short? Jim Lee is overrated.

As is said in that classic superman story...
"He just combed his hair and stuck on a pair of glasses!"

How do you hide 3 tons of pure muscle mass?

Read All Star Superman. (Frank Quitely is one of the few artists that I have absolutely no problem waiting for. It's always worth it.)

Like I said, Jim Lee is really, really good at action scenes. Nobody draws a better fight than him. He just sucks at casual scenes. That's why all of his books go at a breakneck speed. Because the writers who work with him take that into account.
