Okay Stuart, when you come to free comic book store in a few weeks I really want to get an original. But I'm not sure what. I was originally going to have you draw my final page for the comic i have in my head that i will probably never write but have the final page burned in my head.

but then i realized i don't have the hundreds of dollars it would take to get you to do it the way i want it.

so here's the question. what should i have you do. i don't want it to be predictable. i want i want it to be something that i will see on my wall and be like, it's cool that i payed $$$ for that peice of art. I'm think a team pic of some type. let me know what you tink. any teams you haven't done before

This is always a hard question to answer... I think that for the most part , everyone wants the same thing..

"what ever is the best piece of art you can get out of the artist"... that's it.. right..?

Now.. how to get that piece out of the artist...that is the question...

I got my first commission from Bob Layton when I was 15 years old... He did a signing at a comic shop that I worked at. I had the same dilemma. So I asked him, "What would you like to draw".. but he wouldn't bite. I said "how about Antman" since he'd drawn that character in marvel premier ( and I was sure that he had to be tired of drawing Iron Man).. his reply was "how about I draw it life size?"

OUCH!

.. ok.. no antman , or ironman.. but I wanted something that was appropriate for his style, but not something that he'd been asked for 100 times.. I chose Dr Doom.. He quickly agreed! Layton put lots of "glints" on the art just like I wanted. I could tell that it was the nice balance between a character that he was familiar with, but not tired of..

.. so.. with that hin mind.. I always say that it's a good idea to think of a couple different requests and let the artist pick his favorite.... One of my favorite commissions was from a fan who asked me to draw my favorite 1980's cartoon character... I chose princess aura from the flash gordon cartoon ( technically from 1979, but I was forgiven .. and I got to draw something that I was interested in )

.. so.. to answer your question directly, but still leaving you up in the air... I would say that you should have a few ideas for when you come to the signing.. and then cross your fingers as to what kinda mood im going to be in.... I got a piece from bill sienkiewicz in September and that's what I did!

see you soon!.. free comics day is always a great time!

okay u missed free comics day which i know you hated but you couldn't help it. its okay though because i couldn't afford an original that day anyways.

i've been thinking of what I'll have you draw when you do make it to the new shop. here are two ideas i came up with so far.

1. a green lantern team shot the four humans plus kilowog(sp). (cause you gotta have kilowog(sp)

2. the incredible hulk ripping sponge bob to shreds

what do you think

Sadly I was ill and couldn't make it to the shop for free comic day... That was a real bummer as Billy and I had planned it for quite some time... on the other hand, Billy said that the day went over very very well and that he was swamped with customers. So I'm happy for him... We've already talked about me coming back for a make up date very very soon... I"ll make sure that there is a posting here when that is going to happen.... As for the original art... I would say that we have to do the Hulk/ square pants piece.. sound like a lot of fun on all sides! Good choice indeed!
