Not only WiR happened in American comics, it can happen in anime & manga as well.

Best example is this anime, Samurai Gun, in which, according to one review (http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=851):
What's worse is that in the first five minutes of this show, we're "treated" to footage of nubile, skimpily dressed women being brutally murdered by psychopaths. Sadly, this is one of the core running themes of the show -- put pretty anime chicks in danger, kill several of them (don't hold the red paint), and have Samurai Gun come in and save the survivors. Swell! Of course, this is supposed to highlight the idea that "the ruling Shogun are wielding their abusive powers" and all that. I'm more than willing to debate the necessity of skewering women onscreen to illustrate this point, though. Ugh. Yes, the antagonists are Really Bad Men, I got it already, geez!

Samurai Gun is just one out of some anime & manga afflicted with the WiR syndrome.

You think you guys can name any anime or manga guilty of this?

The WIR situation in anime/manga has got to be ten times worse then American comics.

On the other hand, they do have several good, competent high profile women characters, too (Inu-Yasha, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Slayers, Bubblegum Crisis etc).

In response to your thread, Alt, I did see a few pages from a Hellsing prequel manga where Seras Victoria was stripped then raped for a few pages by a bad guy.

what is WiR?

Women in Refrigerators.

Brian Cronin did a nice job redefining the term recently.

Here's how he redefined the term.

1. (Objective) A female character is killed/maimed/tortured/raped etc. for the main purpose of eliciting a desired reaction from a male character.

2. (Subjective) I do not believe that the same death/maiming/torture/rape would have occurred had the female character been a male.

Do yourselves a favor and don't watch Ayashi no Ceres, okay? The WiR stuff was bad enough, but I couldn't believe it ended with "kidnapping me, dragging me from my family, raping me for years as you kept me your prisoner, hunting me for generations and killing countless people... was just your way of saying you love me. I forgive you, let's go to heaven together." Yuu Watase is a woman with serious issues.

Women In Refridgerators.

Created by Gail.

The term is a reference to Kyle Rayner's dead girlfriend who was found stuffed in a fridge.

Didn't Hot Gimmick end with the heroine falling in love and submitting to a complete bastard who tried to make her his slave and showed no sign of wanting to change?

I like the whole WiR thing, but everytime I hear someone try to define it it always seems too wide. It's kindof undefinable to me.

I haven't seen the shows listed by Shirke and Night so I can't comment on them. I still think my statement has some credence to it so hopefully someone that's seen those shows can comment on it because I can't.

The last kid anime I saw was Dragon Ball Z. Lot of WIR moments there. I never got into Pokeman as a kid because I am a cheap bastard. I didn't want to get into the whole card collecting craze that exploded when I was in High School.

I am embarrassed to admit that I had Star Wars, pillow, covers, sheets, etc until I was in my twenties.:o

That's disappointing. I was a huge fan of Fushigi Yugi years back.

She sounded incredibly sweet in the small "diaries" she had in every issue.

Likley the worst moment I can think of was a scene in Koike's 70s seinen manga Offered. The main character's girlfriend is kidnapped by this enemy. There was a situation in it done clearly for shock value. It involved the enemy leaving a sick messaged to the character by leaving a severed eyeball in a certain area of his girlfriend.

Yeah.

Also, Berserk can be pretty terrible at times. Yet at the same time, it takes place in this horrible dark age settings. There's graphic rape of characters of both genders.

I keep hearing about Tenjo Tenge bring rather graphic. (And somehow DC/CMX thought they could edit it down to a PG-13 book for kids. So ----ing stupid.)

Then there are series like DearS. The opening theme has a very young sounding girl singing "I'm your slave". Plus all the alien girls on the show are very submissive and even wear collars. Then again, submissive female characters are quite popular in anime. (Then again, to be fair, you sometimes get a good deal of powerful and agressive ones.) Still the bishojo and quieter girl character tend to make more money and it is quite a trend.

You have all these 'dating games' where the reader/viewer tries to sleep with as many female characters as possible, many of whom are definately underage.. or even an underaged sister.

Then we can get into the whole 'moe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_(slang))' craze. Lolicon hentai. The enjo kōsai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjo_kosai) practice that actually goes on in Japanese socity.

Yeah. Japan has isssues.
