Gail, congratulations! This must be just so much fun for you. And I can't imagine how much it sucked not being able to say anything. :)

I'm really happy. I am happy for me, because I can't wait to see this book, especially after reading your interivew at the 'Rama. I'm happy for the other readers, because they are going to get to enjoy this awesome book. I'm happy for you, because it's something you obviously wanted. And I'm happy for my cat, because I just fed him.

OK, that last part had nothing to do with this.

I can't wait to hear who the artists are. Ack! More teasing!

Giant Conga Rats, Gail!

First thing that flashed in my mind when top secret Gail and Dan Didio meetings were brought up? Wonder Woman. Too bad I only ever bring it up LONG AFTER I have flashes like that--and too bad I can't use my spotty psychic ability to better my own situation...>GRUMBLE<.

No doubt this is a clue.

Using my skills of detection and deduction, the art team is either the men's basketball team from the 1992 summer olympics or the remaning cast members from the 1989 psychiatric patient comedy The Dream Team.

Dear Gail,

I'll read your comics forever, because you said this-

"The book is about the best goddamned warrior planet Earth has ever known, and she happens to carry a mystical arsenal around just for the hell of it.

If a writer can’t make that interesting and fun, they really shouldn’t be writing superheroes."

And on a tangent, are any monkeys harmed in the process of making this comic?

Well, we hope not. But Wonder Woman had some truly horrible artists pre-Infinite Crisis. What's that guy's name? Something Richards?

No clue. The only WW comics I ever bought were the Heinberg issues and his unprofessionalism almost made me never want to buy it again.

El Santo
04-13-2007, 06:54 PM
Ah. I skipped the Heinberg issues entirely once I heard he was chucking out everything Rucka had done right with the book to be replaced by...nothing, apparently. That's why I'm really sad to see that they won't be chucking Heinberg's crap, but are going to have Gail try to make some kind of sense out of it.

I'm hopeful, but cautious.

I hope it will be mature and adult.

which would be most of whom is currently buying/reading comics.

if you are looking for a "tween" Wonder Woman, I'd suggest checking out the Trina Robbins mini from years ago.

or Wondy from any of the Superfriends comics (from the 70's) or JLU currently.

I've got zero problem with that. Just seeing if it was something my eleven year old daughter would be interested in.

well, perhaps. . but it's true.

It's RARE for me to see anyone under the age of 20 in the comics shop buying.

I'd say over 90% of the people w/ pull lists at my shop are in the mid-30's to 45 years of age.

that's just the facts.

I dunno if it's due to the cost (we working adults can afford the books), or just lack of interest in the Characters.

If your child is 11, I'd think that's close enough to comprehend any "mature" themes in Wonder Woman.

(and that is not to say that I'd recommend an Avatar book, or "Lost Girls" for an 11 year old. But in terms of Wonder Woman, even if the Lesbian angle were to be explored, I cannot imagine it would be in a way that a younger reader would have issues comprehending / understanding.

and after all, this *is* Gail we are talking about. . she tackled Homosexuality and Adult topics in Birds of Prey too. . . was your daughter allowed to follow that? (I'd guess the jokes about the "Mega-rod" went right over her head, if she was).

Hmmm. Kinda looking for an ongoing for her, and she never showed much interest in the JLU cartoon. The only thing she likes right now is the Spider-man/Mary Jane series.

Has she been reading the Power Pack Minis from Marvel? (I don't support Marvel books at all, but I've heard very good things about these team-ups).

I'd bet she would also like Boneyard (from NBM press), or Linda Medley's "Castle Waiting" .

If you want to stick w/ the Superhero Genre, (AVOID Supergirl like the Plague), but Super-Girl and the Legion of Superheroes has been very good (and the main characters are all teens).

She's never read BOP. Not from us stopping her from reading it, just from us knowing her interests. She doesn't like the Spider-Girl comics, but loves the Mary Jane books. I just now asked her why she likes Mary Jane over Spider-Girl, and she says the latter is not any fun, and too dark. So BOP just wouldn't be her cup of tea.

Has she been reading the Power Pack Minis from Marvel? (I don't support Marvel books at all, but I've heard very good things about these team-ups).

Is it ongoing? I'm looking for something she can follow long term.

The Power Pack books are really a "series of mini-series" -- as soon as one ends, the next one starts. So it's basically an ongoing. And I recommend 'em myself -- I love the characters and I think Marc Sumerak is really doing them justice.

My daughter is 14 now. We started her off with Powerpuff Girls and Looney Tunes comics. Powerpuff is cancelled now, but she still loves the Looney tunes. Plus JLU, and Teen Titans GO! is a favourite - half the team being girls doesn't hurt.

That said, the Johnny DC titles are for younger readers. From there, I found the Showcase books were really good. Brooke said most of them from the 60s are so Corny! but she's read most of them regardless. We've had some fantastic father/daughter conversations that have gone for days about things that have changed from the comics to the cartoons for JLA, Shazam! Teen Titans, Hawkman... with the Legion of Superheroes getting their own cartoon, I'll pick up the latest and do it again. I've been bending her brain with threats of getting the "War that Time Forgot" Showcase (WWII soldiers versus Dinosaurs on lost islands in the Pacific! What's not to love?). And there's another Teen Titans one due, plus Batgirl in July, hoping for a Wonder Woman one soon...

We've also picked up a couple of non-ongoing titles. She LOVED the Monkeyman & O'Brien TPB. The Jeff Smith Shazam! series currently. Lions Tigers and Bears. Mike Hunkell's Herobear & The Kid (when, oh when, will that ever come out again??). We've seen Bone collections on the shelf that we'll be heading for next.

Besides that, Brooke has moved on to VIZ Manga titles: Naruto and Ranma 1/2. She devours those with a passion.

So, there's lots of stuff out there that a younger girl can find and enjoy. Have fun finding what works for you!

These are out-of-continuity stories with the kids at their original ages -- from about 6 (the youngest) to 12 (the oldest).

I've always had a soft spot for the Pack -- I was just about in the middle of the kids' ages when the book premiered, and it was a favorite of mine for years.
