My library had the boxset so I checked it out. The anime is really dated but good. I really freaked out when I heard the voice for Rubedo (Xenosaga) and Lilly. (Trigun) I was wondering if any of you wanted to talk about this show.

The quality of animation is inferior to what's being produced today. You can tell it's ten years old. Other than that everything about the show holds up rather nicely. Everything from the action to the character arcs is awesome. I'm not kidding when I say this show has everything, drama, action, comedy, tragedy, heroism, everything you can think of is here. Even the animation is awesome just dated.

Outlaw Star is one of my favorites even though i havn't seen it in a while. While its not a real stand out title, I think its one of the perfect intro anime series.
This show has everything, smart ass bounty hunters, cool headed assasin, comedic cat girl, kid sidekick, and a robot/cyborg/clone/super special girl as part of the main cast(I serously am not too sure what Melfina is)
The show has pirates, spaceships, mecha battles, (semi)tragic death, the gay comedic character that hits on the hero, it has villainous criminal group with obligatory big villain set (think Juppengata from Kenshin) hell it even has a hot springs episode!
All these archetypes are thrown in and it all works well! Sadly though, nothing really elevates it higher to one being one of really great titles but its just a fun show that can blend the drama and comedy so well.
Ahh memories :D
I totally recommend it to anyone, though don't look for anything ground breaking, its a very fun show.

Exactly. It's a really good show, that somehow manages to be both funny, tragic, and bad-ass at different points in the story-arc. And it has excellent music.

Speaking of him, if you are gay or offended by gay stereotypes then you might want to skip the couple of episodes where Luo is featured prominently.

Only time i was ever able to see Outlaw Star was when G4 still did their late night Anime block. I came in late on the series but still like it.
What was ep. 26?

Actually, it was episode twenty-three, "The Hot Springs of Planet Tenrei," that wasn't aired on Toonami when the show first ran on Cartoon Network years ago. Instead of just editing out the sexual innuendo and nudity, they pulled the entire episode, which is actually integral to the ending of the series since it explains how Gene suddenly has all of those cool new caster shells. It was full of fanservice, though, including a nude Aisha Clan-Clan and a goddess stripping for two old lecherous gods.
The series is great, and it's withstood the test of time. Even now, years after it was made, when I go back and watch it, I see a shonen animé that doesn't fall into all of the typical traps, like tiered conflict-resolution and poor character development. It helps that it's only twenty-six episodes, of course. Fun show. Now that I've been reminded of it again, I think I'll have to watch it again sometime soon.

I remember watching it on cartoon network, and it just blew my mind. Then it just dissapeared :(
It's kindoff like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop having a baby.
Btw, if you bought it on dvd today, would you get the unrated and the uncensored version?

It was on CN? I'm intelligent aren't i... whatever, i was little...
Well, I guess that makes more sense now as to why i didn't realy get how it ended. I suppose i can understand the reason for the censorship, but they didn't have to take the whole ep. did they?
If i could find it now, i think i would watch it again too.

I bought the box set, like... six years ago? And it had all of the episodes completely uncut. Bandai's really good about releasing their animé with all of its original content.

I see, so the cussing and the nudity are in there right?
Also, what other extra content was there?
And where did you buy it?

Extra content? Just bilingual audio. And image galleries on a few discs. Nothing special, though. Remember, I bought this, like... a decade ago. Special features weren't as huge back then. And I bought it at Suncoast, but you could probably get it on Amazon easy enough.

Well finally a thread I can get exicted about! I just finished watching star again a couple of months ago. Watched it when I could on toonami and AS but it was pulled before its time and I only got to see a hand ful of episodes, then I get the Box set (40 at best buy, 30 at hastings, newer box set with a red cover but still little to no special fetures) and WOW Im in love all over again. Then I perchased evagelion and Escaflowne, and now I think i need to revisit Gene and the gang.
Also if you guy like OS their is a spin-off called Angel Links which is set in the same universe. Their is en episode that kinda has them in it with that big lizard guy but dont remember which one. Its centered around the 16 yo captain of a spaceship and her strange crew. Ive neevr see it but ive heard good things.
Wow how awsome it even has a spinoff!

Actually, the eBay one's legit, and cheap for a 26-episode animé. I guess it helps that the show's over a decade old. I mean, you could probably get all the Harlock shows for less than thirty bucks nowadays. If you're really down for buying an entire series on a whim, thirty bucks ain't a bad price.

I know, I was thinking with going with that one, but the special edition one on amazong looks pretty good too, I wasn't sure if that was legit...

Yep. Looks like a foreign collection of the dubbed set of episodes. I have a similar looking collection for "Rurouni Kenshin." Two box sets, six DVDs a piece, thirty bucks a set, got all ninety-something episodes for sixty bucks.

I brought the boxset a few months ago from Best Buy. After 10 ten years the show is still great. I remember loving the show when it came on Toonami and early Adult Swim. After watching this show again I was thinking of checking out Angel Links. I hear it's a spin-off series.

Outlaw Star was one of the first real Anime`s put on Cartoon Network. While its nothing classic, many will claim that it is..simply because of the CN fact.Added to that, the animation was actually rushed in some cases..but it looks overall good.

That's a bootleg. Look in the lower right hand corner. F/X is a bootlegging outfit. Alot of the imported "perfect collections" are bootlegs :( (sad face because I thought I was getting a great deal, but they turned out to be bootlegs)
I used to have a link with all kinds of great info to tell between legit and bootleg, but I can't seem to find it.
General Outlaw Star talk:
The hot springs epsisode had to be edited out just becasue of the amount of naked flesh, even though, as far as I can tell, they never drew nipples. But given that Gene repeatedly winds up in the women's hot spring it would be tough to edit around that. Unless they got smart and just [spoil]airbrushed on swimsuits[/spoils]
To make up for this, the next episode had a voice over by Jim explaining to Gene about the rare casters. It summen up the needed info in about 5 lines.

Actually ANN reported that they did draw nipples on Aisha, but she was the only one that they would be visible on (it was on their old "how are the tv episodes edited" report. The terminology used made it stick in my mind.).
They probably did not go the Tenchi route on the episode because the employees at CN Toonami paid out of their own personal pockets for that.

The problem with bootleg is that most of time sellers and buyers don't know the product is a bootleg. That's how good the technology is these days.

Bootleg. The bottom right hand corner in green letters are the letters "FX" they are company known to distribute bootlegged anime.
I really REALLY wish I still had the link. I searched on Yahoo for the info but couldn't find it. Maybe the person (and website they linked to) were blowing smoke up my butt.
Legality aside. I own that set. Quality is great, I never had a problem. Thing is, I bought about 4 series from "FX" before I knew they were pirates, but they do produce good quality DVD's.

If you are hunting for the legit dvd's......
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/FWi8BEjZR2gnsQybpU/browse/item/61957/4/0/0
There's 2 current boxset releases of the title.... they use the same discs. The one above is the first for 59.98, while there's an Anime Legends releases http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/FWi8BEjZR2gnsQybpU/browse/item/68508/4/0/0 for 49.98. You should be able to order them from just about anywhere, via special order. If you shop around, you might find a lower price then the ones listed on RS.
I got the series on VHS myself, the 2nd half in a boxset for about 6 bucks off Ebay [It's a lot easier to sift through the VHSes for non-bootlegs, though VHSes tend to be less common on Ebay nowadays]
