I do. I think it would be really interesting to see Batman fighting Joker, Two-Face or Mr. Zsasz without the limitations of the mainstream DC print.

It wouldn't need to be Vertigo. DC does the occasional mature readers story in their own impring like Light Brigade and Batman: Manbat

It's true that you don't need to go the Vertigo route in order to run a mature storyline. As a matter of fact, it would complicate and compromise DC's own standing policy to do so. Because, as I understand it, once a former DCU character appears in Vertigo, they can no longer be used in the DCU. And speaking for myself only, there's nothing Vertigo could add to Batman that I particularly want to see.

I don't think so, since Zatanna has had her own Vertigo oneshot, and Killer Croc and Solomon Grundy guest starred in post-Vertigo Swamp Thing. Heck, IIRC, Lucifer Morningstar showed up in The Spectre once as well. Dr. Occult seems to bounce between Vertigo and the DCU too.

But yes, there is no need to go Vertigo. Stories like the Man-Bat mini, Arkham Asylum, and the Red Rain trilogy have proved that.

Well, I heard about the policy from DC creators. If I've misstated it, someone correct the specifics. But I know there is such a policy, unless it's just recently been eliminated.

Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, and Martian Manhunter have appeared in Sandman, and Animal Man has recently returned to the DCU.

Here's my question.

Why?

AOL Time Warner DC Comics likley doesn't want to mix up their more kid friendly characters with more mature content.

Then again this is the same company that had a character turn rapist in its major cross company event and then put the same character into their popular kids show.

DC, land of editorial contradictions.

Anyway, when I first saw this thread, I thought of Arkham Asylum. Wasn't sure if it was Vertigo. Guess it wasn't.

You know, if DC had a ratings system worth a damn, that would help. Comics Code, No Comics Code, and Mature Warning is not a ratings system. The Comics Code is a piece of crap.

Do you mean something like Marvel has?

Sandman and Animal Man both started pre-Vertigo. The idea of having them be set in a different universe probably never even came up. You can throw Swamp Thing, Hellblazer and Shade the Changing Man on that list, too. Since Vertigo launched, though, I think the only characters that have crossed over have been ones that already appeared in one of the titles that would become Vertigo (Zatanna, for example). No new post-Vertigo launch characters have appeared in the DCU. And vice versa.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I'm not sure what the deal is over there. Some characters you can't use. Swamp Thing has been off limits for a few years (I think he dropped in a Batman comic drawn by Kelley Jones and their were some references to his space trip in Starman) and John Constantine seems to be completely cutoff from the DCU. Zantanna seems to drop in when needed (Books of Magic, Seven Soldiers).

Daniel the new Dream made an appearance in JLA a few years back and there was some references to Oa and Ra (Kryptons Red Son) in that Sandman Endless Nights book.

I wouldn't mind Swamp Thing going back to DCU. Be kind of cool to bring him back in a horror book aimed at a general audience. Be kind of cool to see John Constantine guest star in Batman or something.

I think Batman works best as created by Kane and Finger. As an adult strip, it starts seeming silly.

I really don't see what the purpose of having Batman being in Vertigo besides having him drop the 'F-bomb', and seeing full on explecit sex scenes. None of which really enhanances a story.

i think there are enough books out there and they probably will continue to be produced, that when they want to put Batman in 'other' situations, they have and will do so. So there's no need to specifically put him in a vertigo book that I can think of.
