Well, Evangelion was the first anime I really followed. (Saw it at my Catholic High school's Sci Fi club of all places.) The intro was amazing. The ending was various renditions of a standard made famous by Sinatra that played while one of the characters spun around in silouette in front of the moon.

Pretty much all the FMA openings.

Eva's "Thesis of a Cruel angel" still holds up.

I'm fond of the original El-Hazard opening. A rarity in anime in that it's pretty much just instrumental with no vocals.

"The Ballad of Ranma and Akane" from the Ranma OAV's holds a special place in my heart.

I still love the Openings for Escaflowne and The Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

And while I guess it doesn't exactly apply to the songs per se (though I still like them), Hikaru no Go used to start its ending themes in the final 15-30 seconds of the show -- to let us, the viewer, know they were wrapping up for the day.

I second Haruhi and Kanon's Openings and Endings. I also like Escaflowne's opening and Shakugan no Shana's first ending. And Lucky Star's OP is cute enough to kill people.

That said, I would like to nominate the following.

Arguably one of the most saccharine openings ever and just watching the opening, it closely matches the feel and general light-heartedness of the 1st half of the series.

This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard and/or watched and it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the latter episodes.

Tenshi Ni narumon - your typical japanese anime. Starts of looking like a shallow bubblegum storyline and then mindscrews you with some out of left field storyline...:eek:
