BLAST FROM THE PAST FILE

[Yellow Light]On the killing of Steve Rogers, Peter Parker and more in the seventies - Doug Moench on Jim Shooter's plans...

"In other words, he was going to call off Steve Rogers, but not Captain America. And then a new guy, quote, like an investment banker, close quote, would be the new Captain America. He was going to kill off Peter Parker and someone else would be Spider-Man. I said, "This is lunacy. Stan Lee would never let this happen. This is insane." But he was doing it! He got on the phone with me and said, "Look, this is happening and it's starting with you." I said, "What do you mean?" He said, "Next issue of 'Master of Kung Fu,' I want Shang-Chi dead, and when I mean dead, I want to see his blood. I want no way that Shang-Chi would ever be able to come back." I said, "Now why would you do that? If you don't like 'Master of Kung Fu,' kill the book, don't kill the character, because these things have a way of changing over time and in five years you might want to revive the character of the book, etc." "No, I don't want to kill the book, I want to kill the character. Kill Shang-Chi and make a new master of kung-fu, like a ninja." I said, "Mr. Shooter, perhaps you're not aware. Ninjas are Japanese, kung-fu is Chinese."

Ninjitsu and kung fu are forms of martial arts. They have no nationality. There'd be no reason that a guy couldn't be cross-trained in several disciplines. While it would be nearly impossible, I'd imagine, for someone in real life to truly master multiple art forms, we're talking about comic books where Batman is basically supposed to be the master of everything. :D

Mind you, I mostly agree with Moench on his standing up to Shooter's requests...but that's a flimsy defense. :)

Wait... has anyone ever seen Jim Shooter and Dan Didio in the same room?

I want Blue Beetle dead, and when I mean dead, I want to see his blood. I want no way that Blue Beetle would ever be able to come back. Shoot him in the head and burn the corpse!

Kung-fu originates from China and is considered a Chinese discipline while Ninja and Ninjitsu are Japanese. Maybe you're just grouping asian culture together as a whole, but there is a difference. Doug Moench had a point.

Besides the fact that being a "Ninja" carries other connotations -- such as stealth and assasinry while being a master of Kung-Fu does not. One wouldn't expect a "Master of Kung Fu" to go creeping around around dressed in black and wearing hood....

Also, if he didn't want to kill the *title* well.... Didn't he think even a little kid reading "Master of Kung-Fu" would find it kind of strange if the title character was a Ninja? I mean, technically, the title would have to change to "Master Ninja".

First of all: my defense of the situation didn't try to say all Asian culture was the same, as the previous poster tried to say. I simply said that a martial art doesn't require you to be of a certain nationality. I, also, said that an individual could cross-train in several disciplines. We're talking comic books...where Batman supposedly has mastered all disciplines.

To your final bit: a majority of the kids reading the comic book wouldn't catch a contradiction there...they'd just talk about how much ass the character kicked in the issue and how cool it might have looked. :)
