View Full Version : Why did Amazo look like that in JLU?

I was just wondering why they went with such a plain and dull look for Amazo in the JL cartoon.
I was reading a Batman comic recently and I'd forgotten that Amazo in the comics looked more like a big Namor with a goblin hat.
then it clicked oh yeah the one in the cartoon network series looked way different.
Anyone know why they changed him, for the most part in the cartoon everyone pretty much looked like themselves, well except for Brainiac but he was still somewhat reminiscent of the comics.

The JLU Amazo looked more Marvel's Super Adaptoid but I don't really have no problem with how he looks in the cartoon.

I think you already nailed it. Because he looked like Namor in a Goblin hat. Same reason they never refered to Aquaman's brother as "Ocean Master,"
Also, ability to make Silver Surfer reference with Dr. Fate's Defender's group.

Yeah. My best guess is that it was to visually tie him into the Defenders group within a group.

Also, if you watch the episodes that he's in, you'll also find that he's never actually called 'Amazo' either. The only time you see that in reference is when they're looking at his schematics, and even then it's spelled "A.M.A.Z.O." So in the JLU cartoon, it's actually an anagram, not his name.

It's so they could put him in later as the Silver Surfer analogue for the second Defenders episode.

I liked the way he looked. No mouth and ultra big.

So they could make a silver action figure and a gold action figure.

And really, a bit creepy at times, too, especially whenever he has a vendetta.
It's so weird that his VA is Robert Picardo, one of the LEAST-threatening people in all the planet. But then that's a testament to Picardo's skill as an actor, I think :)

Well, I like the original look better, but it is nice and creepy in the cartoon, so that was alright too. But, I like the evil elf look better.
I didn't know much about him before the cartoon. Why would you make an android look like that? I think it makes more sense to have him look the way he did in the cartoon, but I also like way out there stuff too.

Then again, yes, a big giant green elf with a nightcap CAN be a bit creepy, too :)

Considering how much of a Marvel fan Bruce Timm is I can see that as a more likely reason.
I think making Amazo a Silver Surfer analogue in Dr. Fates Defenders team came after. Bruce Timm has said they don't plan this stuff ahead of time and rely on a lot of happy accidents.

Could it have been a licensing issue or something?

I much prefer the dull, gold JLU version of Amazo to the oversized elf in underwear version in the comic-verse.

Don't forget comic Amazo also wears a tube-top.
But yeah, I think A.M.A.Z.O. was designed like that to also emphasize the Blank Slate aspect of the character, especially how he'd just sport the symbols of his enemies when copying them.
