View Full Version : I had a thought reading about the Wii's controllers

I should be honest and say that the first person shooter isn't really my kind of game. The only one I've really played regularly was No One Lives Forever on the PC. When the X-Box came out a friend of mine was going on and on about how good Halo was--I really couldn't get into it because I didn't like trying to aim with an analog stick. Using the mouse on the PC was a lot more accurate in my eyes.

Then I read about what the Wii's controllers could do--the application for sports games is obvious. Now I've only seen one game that would qualify as an FPS on the Wii so far, but it seems like it would be the console of choice based on how accurate your aiming would be Wii-mote. (I haven't really used one so others might be able to attest to this.)

What do you all think?

I don't own a Wii, and unfortunately, I have yet to play one for longer than around 30 minutes. That said, Red Steel (the game I imagine you're thinking of), one of the first FPS games released on the console recieved fairly negative reviews from most of the major gaming publications. Perhaps the biggest criticism of the game was it's control system.

In my opinion, the mouse and keyboard combo is best suited to FPS games, as the mouse -as you say- allows for easier X/Y axis aiming. That's why most console FPS games have some form of autoaim built into the control system (this can be very subtle: Halo simply had very large crosshairs, Goldeneye's weapons automatically pointed at nearby targets, etc. It can also be very blatant and clumsy: Grand Theft Auto had the daft "cycle through targets" button)

Metroid Prime 3, the next installment in Nintnedo first-person Metroid series, is due out sometime later this year, hopefully with much better results. What little we've seen looks amazing: aiming and firing with the right hand, while thrusting your left hand out to fire your grappling beam or rotating it practically to unlock door latches. Here's hoping it delivers.

Am I the only person who thinks analog sticks aren't any worse than keyboard/mouse for most FPS games? About the only FPS I wouldn't dream of playing on anything but a Keyboard/mouse combo is UT2K4

As for the Wii, I've never had the chance to get my hands on one personally, but I don't imagine it'd be much better or worse than playing a light-gun game

Analogue sticks are perfectly ok for most FPS games providing that some form of autoaim is present in the game, but using a decent gaming mouse (Logitech MX518, Razer, etc) gives you a bit of a competetive edge, especially in multiplayer gaming.

You can see this if you go to LAN events or whatever, in theory, competetive gamers can use whatever they want (yes, even USB gamepads), but in practice the humble rodent is almost always used. When a single headshot means the difference between going home empty handed and going home with the prize money, you want to be taking that shot with a mouse.

There's your answer. The UT games are quick, twitch-gaming competetive FPS games favoured by professional gamers.

Coming from PC FPSs, I found Goldeneye on N64 unplayable. Dual analog sticks improved things a lot. It's actually more fun than mouse/keyboard, IMO.

There was also Call of Duty 3 which, as far as I remember, didn't have as harsh criticisms about its controls.

Yeah, but UT is UT. Even the devs admitted that the game got a little too fast for it's own good (even with a mouse) and are slowing it down a bit for UT3. Most FPS games aren't nearly as fast.
