Maybe one general OT: thread for uh.... off-topic topics?

for instance:
Ordered it awhile back, but I finally got a home computer! And it's a 2004 model!!!

To skirt around the movie topic, picked up a new boxed set at best buy yesterday. Not commenting on the changes that were added or subtracted to the movies (and I hope it doesn't get brought up here), but I have to say... The remastering is beautiful. I can't remember the colors ever being that vibrant.

Okay, this is fun.

I picked up Stephen King's The Dark Tower last night. Made it till midnight reading and then my 4 yo woke up and dragged me to bed.

Now I'm trying to hustle my kids through their lessons so I can have time to read some more before my dh gets home tonight, at which point we will no doubt be watching that certain 4-disc set that was just released. :D

Zombie's right - Jonell can't just pick threads she's interested in. She has to read everything. Since CBR has a movie discussion forum, she's asked that we do the discussing there.

I think this one will be otay, David. If it becomes too hard for me to follow, it can close after page eight? ;)

(Alz and I had talked about a "single OT thread" a few weeks back. I wanna see how it goes.)

What about 99 Ballons threads?
That should be fine, since "everyone's a Superhero, everyone's a Captain Kirk".

See? Fits both comic and scifi themes.:D

Alz, thanks for the Cash, great song. Damn, I wish my home computer had a steering wheel. :(

John: If you haven't picked up the album that Cash song is on, do so. If you ain't sheddin' tears before track 7, then you ain't human. :)

Okay...a sanctioned OT thread!

SKY CAPTAIN: Piles of fun! I've read many complaints about weak story and lack of character development, but I thought it did the serial thing brilliantly and that included an easy-to-follow story and one note heroes and villains. Great stuff.

GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: Gorgeous but, like many of these Japanese sci-fi movies, utterly confusing and convoluted. At the beginning I thought I was gonna be able to keep up. Mid-way, I was hopelessly lost. By the end, I was back in the driver's seat. Like many of these movies, the filmmakers like to mix their science with their philosophy and that's usually when I start losing interest. But the movie's entertaining and just beautiful.

I'm cleaning up my harddrive, but before I toss these forever, I thought I'd offer the pics to anyone who is into either SANDMAN or MAGIC THE GATHERING.

(The custom card pics are from eBay years ago-- can't recall the eBay ID of the person who did them.) I thought the guy would eventually do a HB card, but I never spotted one.

Snag them at http://www.hellboy.com/msg_board/temp1/

While I liked the story Chaykin wrote, I didn't like that he made it a Blackhawk story. Blackhawks were a team and a family, Chaykin never got that. It'd be like a Sgt. Rock story where Rock talked down about Easy Company.

In my opinion, on big 'ol tests like the SAT, you only really need to study vocabulary. They gave me a lot of words that I swear were made up when I took it.

On the other stuff like math, either you know it or you don't know it, so studying won't help ya much.

That's just how it was for me, though. Good luck and such.

Don't want to turn this into an anti-Microsoft rant thread--
just want to do a PSA about the Windows Update Service Pack 2.

Be very careful if you install it--
make sure you have a good point to do a system restore
(or a good .tib image to roll back to).

I still don't know how take/use a .tib image of my system-- but man, I'm gonna learn.

Anyhow, I had to do a System Restore on my Windows XP cause it gave about ten error messages. And then somehow, my PC thought it had Windows Media Player 9-- when it didn't-- and then it wouldn't let me install any Windows Media Player to try and at least actually have WMP on my PC.

Alz had mentioned to me that he's heard people say they've been havin' problems with Service Pack 2--
I just spaced about that until it happened to me.
(I'm gonna wait a good long while before I try using that update.)

Anyhow, it seems to be all cool now that I've done a Restore.

hahahahaha... man, it was a hectic PC day today :P

And as per usual-- THANK YOU, ALZ :)

Up with teh rant threads, but the I know that the SP2 did cause some problems with wireless internet cards. It's the Pantheon (http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Pantheon.html) in Rome.

Those are amazine Aurora pics! But they aggravate me, because if they were that intense that far south, they were probably spectacular here-- but it was OVERCAST!! AG! I hope it clears off tonight.

This time last year I was flying from Hamilton from Thunder Bay just as another major mass ejection was hitting the atmosphere. It was the most spectacular display of the Aurora I've ever seen, and was especially spectacular when seen from an airplane, kinda like the first photo in this gallery (http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/aurora/gallery_01nov03.html), which is of the same storm. I tried not to think about all the x-rays going through my body though. :p

Huh. By funny coinkydink, I sorta know the guy that took that photo, or know of him. He runs this site in Calgary: Aurora Chasers (http://www.aurorachasers.com/) where you can set up to receive alerts for when the Aurora will be visible in your area (which can be anywhere, just with varying frequency).

According to his clear sky clock, it's going to be overcast again tonight and tomorrow. :(

Yup. It's wonderful too. =]

Aww man. I've had acid indigestion all day long. D= It *hurts* too.

Also, since my birthday is coming up, which graphic novel/trade paperback should I get? B.P.R.D: Hollow Earth or the new BPRD one? (My room is almost always a mess, so I get graphic novels and stuff to save space)

Right now, my birthday shopping list includes:

* A new shirt, a pair of boots and a shawl/pancho
* Some video games ('Dead or Alive Ultimate' and 'Metroid Prime 2: Echos')
* CANDY!!! =] (Gummi worms/bears, licorice, fudge... you name it!)
* Hellboy movie calendar and the 3 pug calendars out now

Dad says he's going to get me the Hellboy: Directors Cut, if all goes well. Ooooh, I can't wait! =]

If it's a choice between those two, I'd recommend Hollow Earth over Soul of Venice. My $0.02.

Goddamn Johnny Depp looks awesome as Wonka. Is that a regular Oompa Loompa or a Wonkavision Oompa Loompa? 'Cause it looks pretty techno-outfitted to me, so that would be my guess.

The background is a live action plate. The robot is pure CG animation, brilliantly lit (although not literally) with the choreography mocapped from the guy who works with Justin Timberlake... I think. One of the boy bands. Rick will probably remember.

He got so excited he jumped up on the tables and mimiced the dance perfectly. All the artists followed him into the street bring the traffic on Riverside Drive to a screeching halt as he made a triangle behind him and lapsed into our Thriller routine.

That Rick. Anything to lead the discussion back to zombies. ;)

'The Unsomnambulist' attended a screening of "The Bourne Supremacy" last night at Arclight Cinemas that was followed by a Q & A with producer Frank Marshall. Here's his report:

"Nothing terribly new and surprising to come of it. Frank mentioned that "The Bourne Ultimatum" was currently being written for a 2006 shoot start, since Matt Damon is busy til then, as is director Paul Greengrass who'll return after helming the "Watchmen" comic adaptation.

Nooooo!!!
Greengrass is the one thing that screwed up Supremacy -- with all it's damn shakey cam $#!t. I'd like to actually see Jason kick ass, not sense it.

I'm totally psyched for a new sequel, but the shakey cam in BOURNE SUPREMACY was pretty hard for me to watch for the first fifteen minutes/ etc.

I'm a novice to all this, but what's the rationalization for hand held filming? Is it so that the shots are more "life like" in perspective?

Hahahahhaha... when I'm looking at something with my eyes, I don't shake around to get that effect :P

Hopefully, the soundtrack will kick as much butt as much as the first two! ;)

It keeps your eyes more actively engaged with the picture -- which is what real-life does (you're always looking around, not just looking straight ahead). So it simulates your realworld responsiveness to new information, by the darting and zooming, as well as amplifying the perceived energy of the moment.

In contrast though, I think the fight scenes in Bourne Identity were more visceral-true telling in their stark (more open, less jittery/blurry) camera framing than the frantic shake in the sequel. Idenity=you witness the event, Supremacy=you are the event.

:)

Oh coolness!
I tried the link (the day it was posted) and it wouldn't work for me-- but now it's playing!

This trailer, even though bright and happy, made me feel like "oooo-- something dark is coming!" (That might just be the Tim Burton-ness of it though?)

In the original movie, I always freaked when they go through the psychadelic tunnel on the little boat. It always scares me-- I can't wait to see how they do that scene for the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie!

I wonder if it'll be a musical with the songs from the first movie? As a kid I gasped when Gene Wilder was singing in the Candy Garden room and then he drank out of the buttercup and then bit into it! It was so cool :)

Anyone go to the theater this weekend? I saw Blade: Trinity and Ocean's 12. I'd never seen Ocean's Eleven, but my parents made me go with them, and it was lot of fun even if I didn't know what the heck was going on some of the time.

There were two trailers of very serious note in front of Ocean's 12: The New Batman Movie (http://www.filerush.com/download.php?target=batmanbegins.avi) trailer, which is pretty awesome, and a new Constantine trailer, which isn't online, but was AWESOME. I mean, yeah. Keanu comes across WAY better in this one. And no matter how bad it might be, there is no way it can be as bad as Blade: Trinity was. Hoo-boy.

Funny stuff i saw in my email. :)

Malaysian Technology Achievement

After digging to a depth of 100m last year, Russian scientists
found traces of copper wiring dating back 1000 years, and came
to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone
network one thousand years ago.

So as not to be outdone, in the weeks that followed, American
scientists dug 200m, and headlines in the US newspapers read:

"US scientists have found traces of 2000 year old optical fibers
and have concluded that their ancestors already had advanced high
tech digital telephone 1000 years earlier than the Russians."

One week later, a Malaysian scientist En Mat Jeng Jeng, reported
the following: "After digging as deep as 500m at Tg.Kicap,
Malaysian scientists found absolutely nothing.

They have concluded that 5000 years ago, their ancestors were
already using Wireless mobile phones."

The worst part about the article is that it was printed in the Malaysian newspaper last year

Oooo...I hadn't seen this trailer, either. It looks cool, and the music definitely got stuck in my head! I dunno, though. The first one always freaked me out, too, the whole thing. I liked it, but it was a watch-the-train-wreck kind of like. It just always felt like a nightmare to me. And now, as an adult, anything that involves a man who Refuses To Grow Up just reeks of child molester. (Suspicious Mom-Hormones are no doubt involved in that opinion.)

I'll probably see it on DVD; anything Depp is worth watching at least on DVD. ;) Not sure about letting my kids see it, though. (That probably sounds weird considering the fact that I let them watch Hellboy, but I pre-screened it too!)

It's weird to me that neither side of my family has really kept up with this information. I'm finally asking people for information and looking up quite a bit on the internet. This is a BIG job.

Has anyone else looked up historical family information and can possibly recommend a web site or two that actually give worthwhile information? Thanks.

I think that's an awesome thing you're doing, Patrick-- and you're right, it is a HUGE job. I'm sorry I can't recommend anything (personally) about using the internet for the task-- I was lucky, my father's cousin did gobs of research for my dad's side of the family back in the 1970s. It went back to the 1700's solely in Amerca-- basically, it was a family tree with notarized photocopies of birth and death enteries from Bibles and such.

I can't remember a thing about using U.S. Census on microfilm, but I know most state/university libraries can point you in the right direction.

When I was in high school, I was able to note about 5 generations on my mom's side from my grandfather-- my mom is second generation American, so that was a task.

Thanks Jonell. Yeah, digging up information can be interesting. I've already found out that one of my uncles had an extra kid that I never knew about. I also found out that two of my cousins' were named after my grandparents (first name only), which means I share a name with one of them. They have always gone by their middle names so I didn't know. I asked me dad (their uncle) and he didn't know either. His side is going to be difficult for obvious reasons. ;)

Wow, good luck with that. It's quite a project for most folks, I know that much. We got lucky and one of my mom's cousins married into the LDS church (that's Mormon) and they have really awesome resources for researching ancestry.

(It's because of that we found out that my husband and I are actually related.

No, seriously.

Quit looking at me like that! It's by marriage; he had a great-aunt that married one of my great-uncles. Really weird coincidence, though; we met like 2000 miles away from where they did, it's not like we're all from the same state, even.

Okay, my ancestry *is* a lot like a soap opera. I have *four* relatives out there somewhere who were given up for adoption as babies!)

Um, anyway...what was my point? Oh yeah, Mormons. Know any? Ask them. :D

I am interested in my family tree. I had one in my baby book, but my mom borrowed my baby book, forgot that she borrowed it, and I feel guilty about asking about it. I really want it back. My grandfather on my dad's side was very interested in geneology and found literally books full of records going all the way back to the 1700's. On my mom's side of the family things are vastly different. There are huge gaps in it, and even though I have prodded, my mom seems reluctant to tell me more about her family. She comes from East Berlin and grew up in (circa 1952) Germany. Although I have heard a few ancedotal stories, I really know next to nothing about that side of my family. Currently, I have only ONE relative (that I know of) in Germany, who is my mom's sister. The rest of the family all perished in the war. The furthest back I could find on my mom's side is a Vicktor Kreish, who would be my mother's great grandfather. I also have seen some photos my mom had, but my mom doesn't know who they are, or how they're related, she just knows for sure they're family. They look like your typical old timey black and white pictures of unsmiling over dressed uncomfortably looking people. I warrant the must have been wealthy, juding from their clothing. Encase you're wondering, they were not Jews, so they didn't disappear because of the Holocaust. So if you do take family pictures, always write names on the back, you never know....hundreds of years from now someone may have no idea who is in that photo, but they will sure wish they did. Lately I keep wanting to ask my mom again about her family, because I find it so strange there IS no family, I keep wanting to ask her,"Where the hell is the REST of my family?" "Who the hell were my family?"
