View Full Version : DC League: Sean Whitmore & Sophisticated_Gamer vs. TheCrisisKid

Welcome to the next match of the 2007 DC League! The DC League is a large-scale series of battles—a tournament—where posters draft teams and pit their teams against that of other posters, and you vote to decide who wins. When voting, please consider the strategies the players have written, rather than just the team's roster.
Each match is taking place at night in the middle of an abandoned city street 100 yards away from each other, and each character (with few exceptions) depicted is in his/her most frequent incarnation (with few exceptions), and the characters have to act in character (meaning that the heroes cannot kill if they aren't normally wont to do so).
If you have any questions about the strategies, please feel free to post these questions here, and the players will answer. The match will last twenty-four hours. After that time period, the player with the largest number of votes wins.
NOTE - For your vote to count, you must have a post count of no lower than fifty.
Today’s first match: Sean Whitmore & Sophisticated_Gamer vs. TheCrisisKid
Sean Whitmore & Sophisticated_Gamer: Black Alice, Parasite, Gorilla Grodd, Raven, The Ray, Elast-Girl
TheCrisisKid: Deathstroke, The Shade, Scarecrow, Bronze Tiger, Clayface, Solomon Grundy, Prometheus, Phobia, Ra’s Al Ghul, Killer Croc, Brainiac

Sean Whitmore & Sophisticated_Gamer’s strategy:
First Moves (performed simultaneously within the first 5 seconds)
The Ray erects a solid light wall around separating the two teams. The wall charged with light energy, which illuminates the immediate area, diminishing the amount of shadows Shade has to work with. It should also destroy any shadow creation that touch it. He stays close by Black Alice to protect her from anything that might get through the wall, for the few brief moments it takes for her to steal the power of Zatanna.
Raven unleashes her soul self, which passes effortlessly through the Ray’s wall and streaks across the field, aimed at Phobia.
Gorilla Grodd focuses his telekinesis on the other side of the wall, tearing street lights and mailboxes from the ground, (or chunks of concrete if those things aren’t around) and tossing them at the other team with incredible force.
Elasti-Girl and the Parasite are on defense, protecting the rest of the team from any shadow creatures that the Shade generates on their side of the wall (or, for that matter, any enemies who somehow get through). With her stretching ability, Elasti-Girl should be able to intercept an attack from any corner. The Parasite will absorb the life (and powers) out of any of the living shadow demons that may appear.
Second Moves (simultaneous, within 2-3 minutes)
Black Zatanna chants, “!esaec ygolonhceT” Every piece of technology in the area immediately stops functioning. This includes Deathstroke’s weapons, Prometheus’ weapons and cyber-helmet…and Brainiac.
Raven’s soul self envelops Phobia, and it becomes a struggle between an empath and a controller of fear. The problem is, Phobia can only affect a person’s fear once, and in the past, she’s already used Raven’s fear of losing control, and fear of her father Trigon. While Phobia is deciding what to use now, Raven knows exactly what to use. In a past encounter, Raven made Phobia face her own fears and insecurities, and led her on the road to redemption. Now that Phobia has blackslided back into villainy, Raven forces her to face how cowardly and weak she truly is. This knocks Phobia out, as negative contact with Raven’s soul self usually does.
Ray drops the shield as soon as the anti-tech spell is complete, converts himself into light form, and rockets across the field. He focuses his attacks on the Shade (wherever he is now, the Ray can cover the entire field in the blink of an eye), destroying his shadow constructs as fast as he can generate them.
Elasti-Girl grows to 50 feet and stomps across the field, intercepting any long-range stretching attack from Clayface. If Clayface doesn’t strike thusly, Elasti-Girl will just step on him, and swing her massive hands to take out low-powered stragglers like Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Prometheus, and Ra’s. (Presumably Deathstroke and Bronze Tiger will be able to dodge)
Parasite charges Solomon Grundy, absorbing minute traces of the lumbering beast’s strength as he approaches. By the time they are close enough to touch, he has enough strength to trade blows with the Grundy. And with every punch, Parasite takes more and more of the monster’s power.
Grodd races at Deathstroke and Bronze Tiger, the only currently unoccupied opponents. A psychic wave drops the Tiger in his tracks, trapping him in a world of illusion. His telekinesis disarms Deathstroke of any bladed or other non-mechanical weapon he has, and the two of them go at it. Deathstroke is clearly the faster of the two, but Grodd is no slouch in the reflexes department (he has regularly grabbed a running Flash), and manages to land a few solid blows.
Third Moves
Black Zatanna casts a second spell, “.esrepsid ssenkraD” The Shade’s creations instantly disappear, leaving nothing to prevent a light burst from the Ray from slamming into him and knocking him out.
Raven’s soul self has returned to her, and she teleports over to Clayface (who should by now be reforming himself). She opens her cloak and blasts Clayface with the icy coldness of her soul self, freezing him (if not solid, at least enough to prevent easy control of his malleable form).
Parasite by now has reduced Solomon Grundy into a weakling, since he is too dumb to figure out any tactic other than grappling. Parasite smashes the beast into submission, or a fine white paste, whichever comes first.
Elasti-Girl continues smashing the stragglers from above. Grodd continues to grapple with Deathstroke, buffeting him with psychic images to keep him from fighting at 100%.
Wrapping Up
The Ray builds up a powerful charge and destroys Brainiac’s immobile shell.
Zatanna conjures up an airtight cage for Clayface, as well as regular cages for whoever’s still active (possibly Ra’s, maybe Killer Croc).
The Parasite helps Elasti-Girl mop up the rest of the lower-powered characters, and then turns his attention to aid Grodd in defeating Deathstroke.

TheCrisisKid’s strategy:
Pre-battle discussion
- Team TCK groups together to figure out a strategy.
- Deathstroke is an intelligent tactician so the team decides to go with whatever he says.
- Because of the shear number advantage, Deathstroke feels its best for the team to combat those they equal in fighting style (aka magic users face other magic users, and hand to hand fighters face hand to hand fighters), but in groups so that they have the advantage.
- Deathstroke tells the group that if any of them finish their match early, they need to go try to help fight in another match.
- But first they have to split the team up. So Team TCK runs to the middle of town and waits for the opponent's team to chase after them, Team TCK then splits down multiple roads, and tries to trick their desired opponent into following them.
- This works for Parasite, Gorilla Grodd, The Ray, and Elasti-Girl but Raven sticks with Black Alice because she knows not to split up the team from her experience with the Team Titans.
The Battle Begins.
- Solomon Grundy and the Bronze Tiger lure Gorilla Grodd away from his group. Gorilla Grodd hits the Bronze Tiger pretty hard, but is having problems with Solomon Grundy since he can't be mind controlled. Bronze Tiger sees that Solomon Grundy is holding his own against Gorilla Grodd so he ventures out to help fight in another fight. Gorilla Grodd is able to use his psychokinesis to throw stuff at the rampaging Solomon Grundy and Solomn Grundy is definitely getting hurt. Gorilla Grodd gets hit a few times and is exhausted and has hurt his leg from dodging a lot. Solomon Grundy crashes into a building in his last attempt to get to Gorilla Grodd. Gorilla Grodd walks away thinking the match is over and turns his back on Solomon Grundy who was already bleeding and hurt badly. Solomon Grundy comes out of nowhere, with a safe he found in the rubble of the building on his hand, and puts everything he has into one last shot. It connects to Gorilla Grodd's face, and Gorilla Grodd is out cold. Solomon Grundy collapses soon after.
- Killer Croc and Prometheus approach the lured Parasite. Prometheus has to sit back and look through his disks as he hasn't planned for this, so Killer Croc goes in to fight Parasite. Killer Croc has the advantage in the beginning but over time, Parasite absorbs more of his energy and adopts more and more of Killer Croc's agility and strength. Before we know it, Parasite is beating down on Killer Croc, and throws him into the only lightpole, which causes the electrical cord attached to it to break. Parasite takes this chance and grabs it and sucks up some of it's power. With his increased strength, Parasite is about to finish off Killer Croc when Prometheus comes out of nowhere with his advanced nightstick to Parasite's ribs. It's enough of a shot that it freezes Parasite in place for a second, enough time for Prometheus to follow up with a shot to the head, which sends Parasite back into a car. Parasite isn't beat yet, he gets back up and is able to beat up on Prometheus, who doesn't have any super-human endurance and gets thrown back and accidently loses control of his nightstick. The worn Parasite continues to pummel Prometheus and Prometheus' armor falls to pieces. Parasite is standing over Prometheus when Killer Croc takes a big bite out of Parasite's back leg, which causes Parasite to scream in pain, and Killer Croc picks up Prometheus' nightstick and with the combined strength of the nightstick and Killer Croc's strength, he hits Parasite with it, which hurts him badly. Killer Croc's animal instinct kicks in and he finishes the rest of the battle with the hurt Parasite with ease. Prometheus is out, but Killer Croc proceeds into the middle of the own limping slowly.
- Next off is Clayface versus Elasti-Girl. Elasti-Girl grows to a large size, but slips on Clayface in watery mud form. From there, Clayface slips up Elasti-Girl's leg and onto her face, where he proceeds to sufficate her. She grows even larger, bumping into buildings, but clayface is still stuck to her face. She shrinks down to a smaller size, enough to get Clayface off of her, but can't breathe still. She turns back to her normal size, and is still having difficulty breathing, but grows her hand and tries to smack Clayface with it. Before her fist can get to Clayface, she starts choking. Unknown to her, while Elasti-Girl was big, Clayface had split a little bit off of himself and slithered it down her through into her lungs, which he has no expanded and cut off her air line. Elasti-Girl cannot concentrate, and soon falls unconscious without air. Clayface proceeds to walk over to her and out of her mouth comes the small bit of clay, which attaches back to Clayface. Clayface, almost untouched, proceeds to the middle of town.
The Shade and the Ray face off. The Shade has the advantage because of the huge amount of shadow. He creates shadow arms to chase after the flying Ray and also shadow minions. The Ray tries to glow bright enough to reduce the shadows, and flies at the Shadow (whose shadow barrier has just receeded thanks to the exposure of light) but the Shadow is able to form a small shield right in front of him using the shadow created from the Ray being in front of him, and it's strong enough to break one of the Ray's hands, but the shield breaks in the process and the punch connects (just with a loss of strength). The Shade is kind of hurt, and so is the Ray. The Ray is in pain, and he loses his concentration, and the light dims, and the Shade takes this opportunity to summon more of his shadow minions and shadow arms and fights off a hurt Ray. The Ray flies into the sky to avoid them. The Ray decides to turn into light form and shoot himself directly down at the Shade materializing right before it (so to break any shields formed) for the final shot. The Shade sees this coming and right before the Ray connects with the punch (with his good hand), The Shade opens up a portal and sinks into the ground, and the Ray cannot stop and flies right into the ground, crippling his body. The Shade appears a few feet over untouched, but definitely beaten from the encounter. The Ray on the other hand is defeated. The Shade wanders into the middle of town.
- Like I said, Raven won't split up, and decides to stick with Black Alice. Black Alice, on pure odds, activates her ability and copies Raven's powers. The people facing them are Deathstroke, Brainiac, Scarecrow, Phobia, and Ra's Al Ghul. Brainiac takes the early blunt damage from the two females as Deathstroke and Ra's Al Ghul dodge their shadow attacks. Deathstroke comes up with a plan, and tells Scarecrow to dump all his gasses and chemicals down the north street vent. The Scarecrow does as he is told. Deathstroke then tells Phobia to try to tap into Raven's daddy problem. Phobia tries and Raven is fighting it, and Black Alice sees this and flies down and beats Phobia up with shadow manips. Scarecrow tries some crane fighting on Black Alice, but she beats him pretty easily. Now it's just Ra's Al Ghul, and Deathstroke. Raven and Black Alice continue with the shadow manips, and Ra's Al Ghul and Deathstroke keep dodging them. It's near impossible for them to hurt Raven and Black Alice as they are in the sky. Deathstroke mumurs, "just alittle bit more" to himself, and Ra's Al Ghul doesn't understand. Out of the side of his eye, he sees gasses coming out of the street vent and floating in the wind in a different direction. Black Alice and Raven corner Ra's Al Ghul and Deathstroke and Black Alice captures them with shadow hands. Deathstroke smiles and comments, you lose. Raven turns to her side and blasts Black Alice right into the ground. Raven turns into a big raven and imprissions Black Alice in a slowly closing cage. Raven says, No dad, you won't control me anymore. Black Alice doesn't know whats up. Unknown to them both, the wind had finally changed direction and was blowing the gasses from the street vent in the direction of Raven, which tapped into her "Daddy" problems. Black Alice loses concentration and her powers go away, and is about to die and is very scared. She then remembers when her mother died and when she was scared, and gets the raven-pissed off look and the raven powers come back to her and she breaks out of the cage and slaps Raven onto the ground. Raven gets up and is dazed and doesn't remember what happened. Black Alice calms down and explains that she doesn't know what happened either. Out of nowhere, Deathstroke jumps them and starts to fight them. They both summon shadow things and fight off Deathstroke. Deathstroke trips, and falls to the ground, and the girls take advantage and summon 2 large axes and they slice right through Deathstroke. Deathstroke then turns to mud (he was clayface in disquised), and the real Deathstroke stabs his electrical pole in the back of Raven. Raven faints and falls to the ground. Out of nowhere, the Bronze Tiger round house kicks the shocked Black Alice to the back of the head, which knocks her out too.

Black Alice in the past has shown to be able to adopt the powers of someone not around her, but most of the time, she cannot control what power she adopts. In some cases, she has seen a person, and been able to focus on getting that person's power, but I haven't seen a case where Black Alice just decides she wants someone's power that isn't even in the same part of the world as her. If this tactic can be used legally, then Black Alice should be worth double her amount of points since Zantana is priced so high and Black Alice can "easily" adopt her powers.
Also, this is a city. My team isn't going to just wait on the other side of the Ray's wall and let crap be thrown at them. They will probably retreat back into the distance.
Sean's strategy seems feasible, I just don't see it happening as quick as he says it will (the first 5 seconds, etc, etc). But I guess I'm still under the idea that teams don't get any time to prepare, and I guess that is incorrect now.
Yeah, I can easily see how I get beat in this competition. I stayed true to the comics, and made sure everything my team did was within their limits and within their character. But I guess character and limits isn't important. A rough list of the quickest way your team can beat the opponent's team is what people want to see. How boring.
Good strategy Sean. I'm sure you will win this one. Your strategy involved your team working together, which gives you an advantage over my team, which tried to split your team up and defeat them. Part of me falls back onto the whole, if this happened in the comics, a group of goodies like the Ray and baddies like Parasite would never work well together, pokes his head again, but I guess I need to realize that this doesn't go by the comics.
oh, and if anyone wants to read the original version of my strategy (MUCH longer), you can read it at http://teamtck.blogspot.com/

Crisis dont be down, let me give u some words of advice. if you think sean and gamer are using characters beyond thier ability don't complain about it, use that as a debating tool to get votes your way. Ive seen many people with great strats lose because the opponent was able to poke holes in their strategy, now im not saying i agree or disagree with u here but take my advice and start debating

The Crisis Kid, you are making me want to vote against you by being such a bore, in just about every way. There are loads of good things in your strat but it was also margining on a bad fanfick. And your attitude toward the people you are playing with is rude and childish. I'm guessing you're very young.
You also kept saying what the others teams characters would do, rather than say what they might do. You controlled their every move.
Right from the word go you mess up your opponents strat by running off in different directions, I like that. It makes this a hard one to deal with. You say that they split up and follow but what if they just stay there and wait for you to return?
I love Clayface causing Elasti-Girl to slip and then going up her body and suffocating her. This is the most imaginitive strat yet and Elast-Girl does play into it wonderfully.
Sophisticated Gamer and Sean.
You wrote your strat in line with what required. One thing that jumps out is Black Zatanna turning off Brainiac. She says's turn of technology or something similar as a spell and Brainiac goes of line but I suggest that Brainiac's tech is too alien and different from what Alice understands to be tech. I'd like to think that it keeps switching itself back on.
Also can Parrasite suck the life force and energy from a zombie?
Also how oes Black Alice get Zatanna's powers if not there?
I'm not going to vote yet. What are others views on switching Brainiac permanently off with terrestrial magic?

Okay, first everything we did was aproved by Jessica, second, it has been shown in the last issue of Birds of Prey that Black Alice can copy anyone powers even if they are a galazy away, also Black Alice was a steel, that's why she was worth so little we got lucky.
Dear TCK, since there are no pre match preporations, you would be wipped out already while your team was discussing stratedgy together, plus how could of they ran to the middle of the stage when there is a huge light shield?
ALso, solomon grundy is not smart in this turnament, so how in the hell will he come up with a strat like that?
When parasite is fighting killer crok, he would of already killed him by sucking up all of his energy, or atleast left him in the human form.
Plus in Raven fight you get it pretty wrong, and thus will probably be defeated.
Also, you will need to do more predicting of the moves and how would you counter them.

Dear TCK, since there are no pre match preporations, you would be wipped out already while your team was discussing stratedgy together...
You should note that the planning happens pre-battle, as in before your team starts doing anything.
As for Kara's Brainiac question, I was under the impression that the current Brainiac isn't made out of tech. Perhaps I am mistaken.

Yes, read JLA #6,

Read one of the current issues of Birds of Prey or ask Jessica, she got that approved to us.
And yes parasite can suck out any energy, or power or lifeform.
Also, we provided an alturnative way of defeating braniak if that dosen't work...but there is an easy way to deal with any technolodgy, cut their power supply, and they are done.

Atom_Basher, thanks for the encouragement. I don't think Sean really used his characters beyond their ability. With my lack of knowledge, I can't really say that.

I can understand that what I have submitted is not the usual entry. When I saw this contest, I instantly saw me writing out a comic-book like story for it. And that is how I wanted to do it. I felt it still completed the goal of the project, to show how your team beats the other team, but it was just longer. I'm sorry to everyone who doesn't want to read my long submittion.
I'm 21. I don't know if that's good or not.
Thanks for the tips.
Dear TCK, since there are no pre match preporations, you would be wipped out already while your team was discussing stratedgy together, plus how could of they ran to the middle of the stage when there is a huge light shield?

If you read my entry, it says, pre-battle discussion. Because there is no discussion once they beam in, there HAS to be a discussion before, thus that is why I've shown the logic behind mine.
I couldn't have planned for your light shield. I didn't even know which Ray you were. This is where you are assuming that I know as much about your characters as you know about them. I could ask you the same thing. How does your team stick together when my team is forcing them apart? I guessed that Parasite, Ray, Elasti-Girl and Gorilla Grodd would be lured out. It made sense to me that they would. It's not like the team has worked together before and has any team skills at all. Raven would stick with whoever she could because of her advanced team experience.
Solomon Grundy is not smart, and I do not make him out to be smart. His whole strategy in this round was run at your opponent and hit him. That's it. Not until the very end does he show any sense of intellgence when he uses the safe as a glove for extra oomph for his punch, and I don't think that is totally out of his character. He would most likely pick up something else and wack his enemy with it, why not a safe? And it makes sense for the safe to be there. He ran into a building. Buildings have safes.
I wasn't sure how fast Parasite could absorb energy. In his fights with Superman, they have been long, and drawn out, and I thought that Parasite would absorb energy over time. At the same time, Killer Croc is a beast. He's as strong as Bane (according to someone else), and has animal blood running through him, fueling him the whole time. Of course he's going to keep fighting. And I made it obvious that after an amount of time, Parasite would have the advantage and be whooping Killer Croc, but over time, Parasite will lose some of that energy, if not from fighting, but from being whooped himself. So it only made sense for him to be weakest at the very end, and be weakest after Killer Croc bit a chunk out of his leg. Parasite is human, right? That would have hurt pretty damn bad IMHO.
I get the Raven fight pretty wrong? Mind explaining how? I can't work on nothing!
One last thing, TCK why did you vote against yourself?
No, it was not to prove a point. I said it clearly in my first post. I felt Sean's strategy was more sound. Thus I voted for him.
Well, that made him in a huge dissadvantage...oo well better for us.
And I care? Honestly, I entered this league to have fun, and if I lose, I lose. But I'm not going to take cheap shots at my opponents and celebrate at every disadvantage for them.

I call it how I see it. I often time sound like I am complaining, but I wouldn't be complaining if I felt what I had to say didn't need to be said. That's admirable, but if you don't like the rules, or the style of game play or what have you, it's possible to say so without being a sourpuss.
So it's not what you signed on for...don't ruin the others' fun.
Maybe next time, you can run a tournament and lay down your own ground rules. Or just suggest ways to improve things next time one's being set up. Griping now, in the middle of this game...and doing so like a jerk, no less...that's not going to change things, it's only going to make people not want to play...in this or any future games.

Can Parasite absorb powers from a distance?
He has been able to in the past. Most recently in the latest Justice League (via Amazo).
Possibly, but I'm under the impression that Braniac keeps rebuilding himself out of Earth tech, as he sometimes does. Lexcorp cyborg bits, and the like. :)
Also can Parrasite suck the life force and energy from a zombie?
Maybe not "life force", (as in, enough to feed him) but definitely strength.
Also how oes Black Alice get Zatanna's powers if not there?
Her being present isn't required. Black Alice once stole Alan Scott's power while he was in space.
As for Kara's Brainiac question, I was under the impression that the current Brainiac isn't made out of tech. Perhaps I am mistaken.
To the best of my knowledge, Brainiac's alien body is gone for good, so every time he appears now he is a mix of cloned Coluan and cyborg parts. It's possible I overestimated exactly how mechanical he is, but just in case, I did make sure to take him out telepathically on top of that.
EDIT: That is, I took him out telepathically in my updated strategy, which I notice was mistakenly not posted in favor in my first draft.

Some very creative stuff in your strat, CrisisKid! I think now that you've seen a few matches, you'll be able to improve your future ones even more.
And hey, once this fight is over, I'll happily fill you in on anything you don't know about your characters. ;)

I really enjoyed reading your strat, CrisisKid, but I'm not sure how much of it will work. I've no probs with Grundy finding a safe in the rubble though - if not a safe, he'll find a big block of concrete or something similar.
Ray's wall of light really helps Shade because suddenly there will be loads of shadows for him to use - usually there are going to be very few shadows in these night-time matches.
I'm thinking it over

Ok, thanks, I wasn't aware of Black Alice being able to do that. I think you should have made a big point of that and convinced Jessica to up her value but if that's the way you want to win games, so be it.;)
As for Brainiac, cool. And I'll go with the Solomon thing. You have my vote.

True, but Shade can also summon shadows from nothingess, I believe, so I figured I had nothing to lose there.

It's all there in the Sign-Up thread. I asked Jess at least a few questions to rule out what she could and couldn't do here, for everyone to see. :)

You think I'm coming off as a jerk? I'll accept that, but I think your seeing it wrong. I'm not going to debate about how I've not being like a jerk, because we really don't need to clutter the thread up with that nonsense.
In the middle of the game? This is the first rounds! The game just started! When am I allowed to call out the BS I see? At the end of the game, after everyone let the BS slide? All I am saying is that if I see a problem, I will point it out now. Not tomorrow, not at the end of the event. Don't like it? Don't read it.
It's funny. People have spammed up threads debating my "ill" attitude more than the few posts that I actually posted with so-described atttitude. LOL

Yeah, I remember you discussing it, alls I'm saying is that perhaps none of us should have picked her because she is such an advantage in being far to low points wise.
But rules is rules and you are playing by them and I respect that.

That's how I remember it too. But I do get the feeling that someone else needs shadows around. Obsidian maybe?
I'm still thinking over the strats, but I'd just like to say that there is room in this tournament for many different kinds of strategies. TheCrisisKid's strat isn't better or worse than any other that's used in this tournament. Just different.

Obsidian supposedly gets his powers from the same Shadowlands as Shade and Nightshade, so I'm not really sure. It's possible they all needed shadows nearby in their earlier appearances, before they'd discovered their powers' source.

Actually, Obsidian and Shade get their powers from the Shadowlands but Nightshade uses the Land of Nightshades for power.
