Similar to the Huntress thread, who do you think drew or draws Robin the best?

I cant find any pictures at the moment but for my money it's Tom Lyle. When I think of Tim Drake, I think of the round faced teenager with the wild spikey hair.

There've been some pretty good Robins, and they mostly do a pretty good job of making him seem his age, but Lyle and Tom Grummett are the two that really stand out for me.

Not a fan of his new costume though, so that hampers more recent artists' interpretations.

Grummet was great but when I think of him, it's as the definitive Superboy artist (Kon-El of course)

Plus I was pretty disappointed that it wasnt Lyle who was doing the art chores when ROBIN became a regular series.

I don't like it either. Too much red; makes him look like a Daredevil wannabe. I thought the previous costume was perfect and don't see why they felt the need to chance it.

The Artist from Supergirl.

The Artist from Teen Titans.

Ie the one who makes him look 17/18 and not 11/12.

I also think of Tom Grummett as the definitive Robin artist.

However, I have also enjoyed Tony Daniel's current depiction in Teen Titans. I am not a fan of the current cartoony artwork in the Robin series.

Grummett is a great teen artist. I also enjoy Norm Breyfogle on anything Bat-related.

I loved Grummett's Robin. Probably the best of the lot, followed by Pete Woods; who did some brilliant work on that title.

I would say Tom Grummet and Tony Daniel. I remember when Robin got his solo series and Grummet just kicked so much butt on that title...when I picture Tim in my head it is a Tom Grummet drawing. I don't mind the current costume although the previous version was perfection, but I think Tony Daniel draws a wicked Tim as Robin and he is the second artist I think of when I think of Robin. I also enjoyed Ale Garza's version in Batgirl when he took over that title for a bit.

I like Robin's new costume a lot, but I don't think he's been drawn very well lately. If I had to choose I'd probably say Patrick Gleason. His costume is very similar to the animated Tim Drake's costume, which is a good thing in my opinion. More black and red like an actual Robin.

The thing is, the name comes from Robin Hood, not the bird.

Really? That's surprising. I guess I just assumed it was the bird because characters are always referring to him as Bird-boy and stuff.

True Kane/Finger/Robinson named him after Robin Hood, but...

From Dark Victory: "My mom always called me Robin cuz I was always boppin along"

I think in the comics it's supposed to be more towards the bird.

From Dark Victory: "My mom always called me Robin cuz I was always boppin along"

But that's revisionist history; it's not where the name came from originally. Plus, the continuity of Loeb's material is questionable at least.

that's weird. how does Robin resemble RH in any aspect more than the bird robin? (I know, it was not your idea, just asking. ;) )

Quoted from Jerry Robinson, creator of Robin (in a Comic Journal interview):

We had a long list of about 30 names, and we kept adding others. The names are very important for the characters. Bill was very specific about that, as well as Bob. Most of the names, as I recall, were of mythological origin -- Mercury and others. None of them sounded right to me, or to anybody, because we never agreed on any one.

My reservation was that I thought that it should be a name that evoked an image of a real kid. He didn't have superpowers, nor did Batman. That was what distinguished it from Superman and the other superheroes. I thought the boy should be the same. And thinking of a more human name, I came up with Robin because The Adventures of Robin Hood were boyhood favorites of mine. I had been given a Robin Hood book illustrated by N. C. Wyeth -- I think it was a 10th or 12th birthday present. It was a big, very handsome book for the time, very elaborate because it had full-color illustrations, maybe a dozen throughout the book. It was the full text with full-plate tip-ins. I remembered those because I had pored over them so many times as a kid. I had a vision of Robin Hood just as Wyeth drew him in his costume, and that's what I quickly sketched out when I suggested [the name] Robin, which they seemed to like, and then showed them the costume. And if you look at it, it's Wyeth's costume, from my memory, because I didn't have the book to look at. But it is pretty accurate: the fake mail pants, the red vest, upon which I added the little "R" to correspond with Batman's bat on his chest. When I started to letter the strip, every legend I did started off with a little round drop-out white letter. So I thought of that for the vest.

I loved Tom Grummet's Robin, he started the series way back in what was it, 94? I think.

I also liked how the late great Jim Aparo drew Tim.

And for classic Robin my fave is Dick Sprang's Robin. Norm Breyfogle drew a great Robin too, well of course he was the one who designed the new Robin suit, of course now they have changed it again.

I still don't understand why, it looked better before, now it looks somewhat like that one but more like the Robin costume from the WB cartoon. Although I do like the cape style being somewhat like Batman's, but I don't get why a Robin would have Bat wings. Oh well.

That's really not that bad, we've all seen far worse from Rob. At least the anatomy is somewhat correct. I like his interpretation of the costume as well. Did that series ever see the light of day, or did it dissappear into oblivion like everything else he starts?

I'll go with Jim Aparo for my pick.

I'm gonna toss in some love for Mike Weiringo's version of Tim, back during the Dixon days. 'Ringo's style really suited a young character like Robin so for me, 'Ringo and Breyfogle are tied for best artist of Robin number three.
For Dick and Jason? I'll get back to you.

Yeah, came out a while ago. You didn't see it? It was like a 2 issue mini Teen Titans he did with Gail. He got trounced for his art on those issues.

I actually liked that costume too. MUCH better than his new one.

Sadly as a rule I don't remember artists. Unless they are Really Really Bad. I go out of my way to avoid anything Alex Mallev does. I think threads like this need more pictures ;)
