Besides the new set of Guardians from Kyle, there are the Zamorans and the Controllers from the same stock.
Are they of the same power level - they seem not to be and only used as occassional villians.

Zamarons are warriors and Controllers are scientists. Only the Controllers have come close to matching the Guardians in terms of power, by trying to recreate the Corps in the Darkstars and imbuing Effigy with the powers they gave him, something they could do on a massive scale.

Are the Controllers still around? Did they abandon the Darkstars or were they all killed or what?

Can someone tell me what happened exactly to the Darkstars? Are there any left with working suits?

Last of them got wiped out in the Adam Strange mini-series. The Darkstars name was co-opted by a death cult that worshipped the Lady Styx in the Omega Men mini-series.

I think the last working Darkstar suit is worn by Manhunter.

So, the Controllers basically said, "enough of this" and left them to their own devises and then they were either killed off or lost their suits?

The Controllers, originally, created the Darkstars to be their own personal militia, but as they got more members, some of whom were former superheroes like John Stewart and Donna Troy, they started acting like more of a mini-Green Lantern Corps, so the Controllers left them to do whatever they wanted with their powers and holed up on their homeworld.
It was a few years after that they Effigy was introduced. He was a human abucted from Earth and experimented on by the Controllers, giving him pyrokinesis. He can create fire and shape fire into constructs, like a Green Lantern. They never really explained what the Controllers had planned to do with him, though, and he seems to operate independently anymore.
Considering how much the Controllers are ignored, I'd love to see them behind the Sinestro Corps in some way, but their M.O. isn't spreading fear or fighting the Guardians, they're just knowledge-hungry recluses.

Have the Zamarons ever met the Amazons? That might be an interesting crossover.
