View Full Version : Which is the best low selling comic book?

Which would you suggest to read among the low-selling (less than 35,000 copies), main DC Universe (no Vertigo or Wildstorm), ongoing (no limited series), present time (sorry JLA/JSA Classified, Batman/Superman Confidential, Legion of Superheroes), comic books?
Based on this criteria, the comics to choose from are:
Green Lantern Corps, Outsiders, Nightwing, Green Arrow, Robin, Birds of Prey, Shadowpact, Checkmate, Catwoman, The All-New Atom, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, Hawkgirl, and Manhunter.
Just this month, I got back into comics after a long absence and I have enough in my monthly budget to add one or two more DC comics to my pull list.
I am currently collecting Action Comics, Batman, 52, Detective Comics, Flash, Green Lantern, JLA, JSA, Supergirl, Superman, Superman/Batman, Teen Titans, and Wonder Woman.
Help out a newbie and suggest which comic to check out and why or which comic to stay away from and why.
Remember the choices are:
Green Lantern Corps
Outsiders
Nightwing
Green Arrow
Robin
Birds of Prey
Shadowpact
Checkmate
Catwoman
The All-New Atom
Blue Beetle
Aquaman
Hawkgirl
Manhunter.
Please no arguments about how number of issues sold does not mean quality.
THANKS!

I would choose Checkmate followedy by Manhunter.
Checkmate is definitely best when the storylines are read from start to finish be it in trade format or by just waiting for the designated story issues to all be released.
Manhunter's just all kinds of good.

I dropped Atom a little while ago and have since re-added it because I missed it...its a book I can recommend. I checked out a couple issue of Shadowpact and really liked that one, but I never ended up adding it to my pull list because I'm pretty positive its going to be cancelled any day now, and I would hate to get really invested just in time for it to get canned :(

Skip the Nightwing: Brothers in Blood story arc. You will be doing yourself a gigantic favor.

Shadowpact of that list. But, yah, I fear it will be cancelled. Maybe at least we'll get to see what becomes of Nightmaster first.
Checkmate is the other one thats decent. Probably good to get the trade on that one. Again, not sure of its remaining shelf life.
I like Nightwing since Wolfman came back to the character.

There are a number of good titles there, but my favorite, by far, is Checkmate.

My vote goes for GLC. It was a book I had been hoping to see published for years, so its hard for me to vote any other way.

Now that Tad Williams and Shawn McManus(sp?) is on the book, I have hope for Aquaman and of course, Shadowpact is just plain cool.

out of those options, if I had to pick just one, would go with Nightwing, the current story is going well and Nightwing has a lot of stories to come, not to mention the monitors thing. This is a character that is just waiting for the next big thing and I think we can expect a lot from this book in the months to come.
If you want to get a few more, then definitely go with Birds of Prey and Robin. Robin is a solid book each month, always on time and awesome stories, the art is great too. If you can only afford one more book then get Birds of Prey. This book is just great all around, Gail Simone is awesome and the art is just as good as the writing. The new stories are as good as ever. This is a book that started out as maybe the last read of the week it came out for me, and over the past few months it has become one of the first ones I read, only surpassed by 52, Batman and Detective.

I second that, big time! It's my favourite read out of any DC stuff right now.

Green Lantern Corps has been a heckuva lot of fun lately and with the Sinestro Corps building up, it might be a good idea to jump onto that book.
I would also recommend The Spirit & Jonah Hex, but those aren't on your list.

I just got the first two Manhunter trades at the Unscrewed charity auction (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZzapow21QQhtZ-1), looking forward to seeing if they live up to the hype once I get them.

CHECKMATE first and foremost. Then either Robin, Birds of Prey or Shadowpact.

Birds of Prey, Manhunter and Catwoman are all winners. (But I havn't read Checkmate.)
Jonah Hex wasn't a choice because the original poster specified present day characters.
But the Spirit definitely needs to be on the list: it's perhaps the best book being published today PERIOD. Maybe the original poster assumed erroneously that the stories are set in Eisner's original time frame. If so, he needs to know that this is not the case; Cooke's Spirit is set in the present time.

Green Lantern Corps. It's the only one on the list I still buy. I'd say Birds of Prey also as that's the one I keep contemplating picking up again.

I consider all of these very good:
Birds of Prey
Checkmate
Blue Beetle
Manhunter
If I had to choose the best, it's Checkmate, hands down. (And I read 3/4 of the same titles you do)

One of these, in order:
The All-New Atom
Blue Beetle
Birds of Prey
Nightwing
I would personally suggest the Atom or Blue Beetle, just for the sake their still early on and you don't need much of a backstory with them considering their both basically new characters. Two trades and youve got the entire story for them really.

The Spirit. Ya' missed one.
EDIT: Didn't notice the second page, so I echo Bored and Jim's opinions. The Spirit is quite possibly the best monthly comic book right now.

Well, The Spirit isn't exactly a DC-Universe-set comic, so it probably doesn't qualify for this thread.
Among the ones that do, I'm partial to The All-New Atom and Blue Beetle, in no particular order.

It takes place in Central City and Dolan and Jim Gordan are good friends. The Spirit even met Batman, now. It's in continuity.

If you can only afford one more book then get Birds of Prey.
Ack, I didnt notice Birds of Prey on the list. Definetly recommend that one, its an excellent series I myself became addicted to recently.
And as for the Spirit, I think you guys convinced ME. I'm gonna haveta check it out.

My understanding is that it is not that simple.

I would recommend Checkmate if you can only get one, but Birds of Prey, Manhunter, and The All-New Atom are also great choices.

The only one I read is GLC, but I'm thinking about pulling it. The only character worth a crud is Guy Gardener, the rest are just boring or stale.
OF the list, though, I would recommend Manhunter. I am not currently buying it monthly, but I have read the first few issues. Everytime there is a comics sale I always look for the back issues, but they are kind of hard to find.
Also, another one for the Spirit. I didnt know it was low selling, but if it really is you need to GET ON THAT!

"Low selling" is a relative expression. It's really doing reasonably good at the moment (as are some others of these), but the original poster made the rules.
Btw, some of you people really need to check out Catwoman. It's one of my favorites each month, but I think I'm the only one reading it.
Remember the choices are:
Green Lantern Corps
Outsiders
Nightwing
Green Arrow
Robin
Birds of Prey
Shadowpact
Checkmate
Catwoman
The All-New Atom
Blue Beetle
Aquaman
Hawkgirl
Manhunter.
Of that list, my first choice would be Manhunter. Also good are Catwoman, Green Lantern Corps, Birds of Prey and Checkmate.

Green Lantern Corps and it isn't a poor seller. It regularly makes it way into the Top 50 books each month.

My understanding is that it is not that simple.
You'd be wrong then. The book's incredibly simple, which is why it's one of the best thing's DC's doing right now. It may take place in a prominent city in the DCU, but it doesn't get caught up in the muckity-muck crapstorm of continuity.
Btw, some of you people really need to check out Catwoman. It's one of my favorites each month, but I think I'm the only one reading it.
It's great, not as great as it was when Brubaker and Cooke were on it, but it's definitely one of my favorite DC titles. Pfeifer's done some awesome stuff with Selina, and he made the motherhood thing work when I thought for sure it would've been one of the worst moves for the title. Oh, and Film Freak? Hands down, best new villain I've seen in years.

Shadowpact of that list. But, yah, I fear it will be cancelled.
Hm. Too bad if true. I did not notice Shadowpact yet. I have to admin that I took a longer break from reading (and collecting) comics, but I liked the characters from Shadowpact when I saw them in 'Day of Vengeance'.
I'll give them a try - as there are all issues still available as backorder here I can get the whole series. Regardless how long it will last.

Nightwing and Birds of Prey are two of my favs. I do like GA, but I thoughtit sold over 37,000 last time the figures were released so I don't consider it a low selling book.

Nightwing
Green Arrow
Robin

Green Lantern Corps
Outsiders
Nightwing
Green Arrow
Robin
Birds of Prey
Shadowpact
Checkmate
Catwoman
The All-New Atom
Blue Beetle
Aquaman
Hawkgirl
Manhunter.
I can't choose, because I'm not reading any of these titles at this time. However, I did want to comment that it seems like most if not all of these comics were significantly changed OYL.
