Aw, man...
He was one of my all-time favorite artists growing up!
I discovered his work through Batman first and Dr. Strange after and I just could never get over the sense of good old-fashioned class and elegance that seemed to irradiate from his art.
Thank you for giving me the oportunity to marvel at your craft, Mr. Rogers.

I didn't intend to sign up until a much later date but I saw this news and it made me sad. I had recently bought the STRANGE APPARITIONS trade and I also have the DARK DETECTIVE trade as well. I really liked Rogers' work and I was hoping for a sequel to DD. I guess that won't be happening now.

I'm devastated by this news :( :( :(
Perhaps Englehart/Rogers had already started work on their Dark Detective sequel, maybe even finished it for all we know.

Very, very sad. His was truly one of the classic portrayals. May he RIP.
But nonetheless, welcome to CBR, casual Bat Fan.
I never know what to say in these threads. My first reaction was "That sucks," but that seemed kind of disrespectful. And Mr. Rogers' portrayal of Batman was one of the classics. When I think of how Batman should look, it's always Marshall Rogers or Jim Aparo.
RIP, sir. You will be missed.

His issues of 'Tec were some of the first comics I ever bought (new) as a kid. Later, when I was buying back issues, around 1980, they were going for $2.40 Cdn! I thought that was a fortune, but I had to finally get part 2 of the Joker story, so I saved up.
It's sad to lose him, but these issues will always remain "the" archetypal bat-stories for me.

A true pro. One of the best. A unique style. Definitive runs on Batman & Dr Strange.

Damn. I was looking forward to that new Batman book from him and Engleheart and.. bam. Wow. His run was before my time, but I really was amazed when I checked out some collected editions. I also picked up Dark Knight Detective as it came out. Really a shame.

Marshall Rogers, to me at least, was the definitive Batman artist. His storytelling had this flawless flow to it, and his characters in action moved with such grace and speed (at least that's how my mind and imagination viewed it). It truly saddens me that I won't be able to see any new art from him.

Truly terrible news. Marshall was one of the true masters of comic art, whether on Batman, Mr. Miracle, Dr. Strange or the Silver Surfer. His recent work on Dark Detective was like a breath of fresh air. He will be sorely missed.

He was one of the A-list artist. Even if you didn't like the writer or the character you bought the book if Marshall Rogers drew it.
He was one of the greats. I'll remember him for his Batman work and his Silver Surfer work. His artwork was always a treat and you could tell the work that he poured into it. He will be missed.
I truly loved both The Coyote and the wonderfully cool, Capt. Quick and the Foozle.

57 is only 12 years older then I am now, and trust me, it ain't old either.
It's a shame and a real loss to see someone that talented die in his prime.

A shame. I recently did both Dark Detective and Strange Apparitions for my blog, and the art in those books are and were just so good. A shame that such a classic artist has died so young at 57.

I only recently learned about Dave Cockrum so this really hit me hard. I started reading around 1976. (My first Batman comic featured the Black Spider with art by Ernie Chau I think. Those were fun days!) Marshall Rogers, Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, & Irv Novick introduced me to Batman when I was a kid. Actually I kind of missed alot of Adams work. I only saw covers and the big Al Ghul treasury collection from 1977. I loved Rogers work though! The elaborate backgrounds. The GREAT cape!! Silver. The mature Robin from the Penguin story. Those are some wonderful comics! I remember a "new artist" profile in the letters page. The Dark Detective series recently was the first Batman comic I'd bought in years.
I know alot of adults appreciate his work but the first thing I think of is that he made alot of little kids (remember kids?) very very happy!! Thank you Marshall Rogers for all the enjoyment!!

Sounds like you and I must've started reading comics around the same time, Jon-El. I missed a lot of the Adams stuff too, but had the Al Ghul treasury as well. Rogers was definitive for me, too. However, I always felt that the unsung hero was Irv Novick. Giants like Rogers and Adams came and went, but old Irv was always there in between... kind of a Curt Swan for Batman. I loved his work.
