2 Part Question:

1. what happened to his Oz game? which, as I remember, was supposed to be like his Alice game.

2. should he be working in China, where he is apparently now? with all the asian countries involed in the video game process, should politics come into play? I know China actually has a lot invested in american dealings and many American companies deal with China, but do videogame makers have any sort of political stance on their dealings with places like China?

American said that publishers are unwilling to back an "innovative" unestablished franchise like Oz. That his most recent game, Bad Day LA, was universally panned by critics certainly won't help him find publishers...

oh, thanks serik. :) but that's weird not to back him on Oz considering how well he did with Alice and it was a similar idea. but i guess BD LA was a flop. hmmm..

Translation: The game sucks.

Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with Alice myself.

American McGee is that kid you knew in high school, the one that always listened to Nine Inch Nails, painted his fingernails black (with a Sharpie), drew pictures of dead rabbits in his Math notebook, and thought that the Crow was the best movie ever made. It's unsurprising that his "innovative ideas" didn't take him anywhere.

The only reason American McGee is well-known is because his name appeared on Alice, as if he was some sort of videogaming big shot. And, as I recall from an IGN interview with American, the publisher wanted his name in the title only because it sounds cool.

There's nothing special about this guy, IMHO.

Sadly, I know exactly the kid you're talking about. I wonder if I rode the bus with McGee.

Well, he did also do level design on some of the most important first person shooters in the genre. But yeah, basically, if his name was Jeff Tarkanian, it would have just been called Alice.

he was the classic lucky n00b, but I have to admit Scrapland was kind of decent

For anyone who claims alice was good, i ask that you go back, play it, and ignore the kinda cool premise.
What in that game was good or different?

I guess maybe b/c I don't play all that many video games, I was not bored by things that other games may have. But I thought the concept, the art and gameplay within such a world was very cool, b/c the only other creepy video game I played before that was Silent Hill game(s).
