Actually, I'd start with Morrison's New X-Men trades then get the first 18 issues of Astonishing in trades then continue with Astonishing. Its the main X book and has the most popular characters and awesome writing and art.

Tough question, I'm liking all main X-titles right now, but they are pretty heavy on continuity. Though, X-Men: First Class is a mini which has just finished and was set in the past, featuring the original five X-Men. It was very accessible to new readers and it will be followed by an ongoing.

Yes, very true. I would recommend that. The Trade is out in June. Or you might be able to get the eight issues from your Comic store. You should have no problems getting them online. eBay is a good place to start.
Other than that... I'm a huge New X-Men fan, so I'm biased on that. Hehe.
It depends on what your after really. Are there any characters you partially like (have heard of?). I'd recommend looking up some X-Men info on websites before you decide. www.uncannyxmen.net is a good choice.
get the first 18 issues of Astonishing in trades then continue with Astonishing. This is also a good one to start with.

Wow , that's a really hard question. Almost all X-titles are being very well written.
I'd recommend:
Astonishing X-men.- Can easily get 3 TPB and be caught up. Entertaining, fresh, and well if you read them all at once , they just have a better feel to it than reading one a month ( or a year ... )
X-Men.- Arguably the best X-book being put out there now. The art is either Love it or Hate it, but other than that it's really good. Start from Carey's stuff.
New X-men .- X-men in training, fun dialog, action packed and probably the best starting point because next month a brand new arc is beginning which promises to have a lot of action and a lot of background characters! (I'm so excited with this book..so it's also a little biased)
Uncanny X-men.- I'd wait until it's collected into TPB to get this, because it's a little slowpaced, but the writing is awesome, IMO.
X-factor.- Very interesting but not in the traditional X-men way, the characters are unique and interesting ( right up there with X-men)
Pretty much the only books I wouldn't recommend are New Excalibur and well I've never really read Exiles so I have no opinion on that.

If you never read X-Men ever then get the "Essential X-Men (http://www.amazon.com/Essential-X-Men-Vol-Marvel-Essentials/dp/0785123768/ref=pd_bbs_sr_10/103-6815706-1208651?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174776568&sr=8-10)" trades, starting with this one

Now here's a full timeline of X-Men books. It's not everything, but you'll get all the X-Men you can possibly handle. You can skip around if you like. You don't have to read one series to understand another
Essential X-Men Vol. 1-7
New X-Men Vol. 1-7 by Grant Morrison
Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1-3
House of M
X-Men: Deadly Genesis
New X-Men: Childhood's End Vol. 1-4
X-Factor Vol. 1-3
If you just want a jumping on point for the current single issue series on the stands, then start at X-Men: First Class #1, X-Men #188, and Uncanny X-Men #475. New story arcs by new writers

Astonishing X-Men is mean to be accessible, and it's pretty good too.
I also recommend Morrison's New X-Men run collected in a series of trade paperbacks, a series of hardcovers, and a single massive $100 hardcover (although if you look around, you should be able to get it for at least half off.)
