I just read Fantastic Four 205, 205, & 208. I have never read these before but if gave me insight to the "weakness" of the Nova Corp. When the Skrulls were attacking Xandar, the Centaurians were fighting back, but they only seemed to have the power of someone like Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. They were riding on skimmers and shooting ray guns. Some flew, but they had no Gravimetric Pulse. They were shooting laser blasts from the back of their wrist cuffs and from guns.
If you have read the story, you notice none of the Centaurians appeared to be physically powerful. None of them had stars on their helmets. Instead, they all had the upside down boomerang. They did not have the three starbursts on their chests. They were all infantry. Richard Rider was the big gun.
Richard received his power from the dying Nova Prime Centaurian, which made him special. He was quickly trained in his sleep in order to fight Zorr. I guess at this time, the World Mind did not give out much power to the Centaurians, except for one - the Nova Prime Centaurian. The rest were flying men with laser guns.
Again, Richard is unique because he was not only the one person who held the power of Nova Prime Centaurian, he is the longest living Nova. The ones in Annihilation: Prologue only came into being after Rich fed his power into Xandar and brought it back into existence. All the Nova's in Annihilation: Prologue were much greener than Rich. They were brash and only thought they were more experienced than him.
In the Nova #1, we will see at least one of the alien races the now dead Nova Corp used to protect. And the preview shows that the alien race was protected by the Nova Corps' sheer number of troops. That's why when Richard Rider shows up alone, the race is concerned that the whole corp did not arrive. They have never had a Nova with tons of power show up to protect them.
The Nova Corps was infantry. But they were far outnumbered by the millions of ships and warriors in the Annihilation Wave. If an infantry is outnumbered, they need bigger guns or bombs. The Nova Corp only had one, Richard Rider.
This also partially explains why Adora told Rich his power had to stay on Xandar if he left (in Rom). He was far more powerful than the other Centaurians. My thinking is that once the Nova Force has been in a Nova, it is easier on the system of a new recipient, transferred from person to person. But when it goes directly from the World Mind to a new recipient, it may take more time to assimilate the power. Or maybe humans are a much better vessel for the force.
