View Full Version : How many Psychics are there? (X-Men #197-related spoiler!)

Okay, so we found out in X-Men #197 that the Ev Urizen, the Mummudrai was drawn to the psychics' energy signatures, so I've been wondering how many psychics in the MU there are. It would have to be a giant psychic energy in order to lure the Mummudrai, so let's figure this out:

Professor X (it doesn't matter if he's depowered, the "M" took more than years to find its way to Earth/other depowered or dead mutants count)

Emma Frost

Lady Mastermind (and the other Mastermind as well?)

Jean Grey

Rachel

The Stepford Cuckoos

Cable?

Quentin Quire

Monet

Nate Grey

Revanche

Madame Web

Psylocke

Shadow King

Exodus

Cassandra Nova

Karma

Mirage

Sinister

-----

I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Anybody care to add to the list?

It appears so.

(are telepaths and psychics the same thing? It's kind of vague in the MU)

Do Monet, Nate Grey and Revance count?

What about Cassandra Nova and Shadow King?
There's also this new x-men kid, trance, who can use her astral form, and that is something that only telepaths can do. Am i wrong?

(are telepaths and psychics the same thing? It's kind of vague in the MU)

Psychics are all those who use psychic powers. This includes telepathy, telekinesis, pyrokinesis, mental projection, clairvoyance, clairaudience, precognition, postcognition, cryokinesis, electrokinesis, possession, technopathy, mindswapping, illusion generation, mental domination and i'm sure a couple that i have forgotten.

Telepathy is the specific psychic ability to read other people's thoughts and project one's own thoughts into other people's minds. Various psychic powers mentioned above are often developed as telepathic powerstunts as they rely on telepathy's basic power.

Not necesarilly. I can't read other people for shit, but i have had some experience with astral projection ;).

In the MU astral projection can be a psychic power in itself although it's origin is generally telepathic in origin as it relies on projecting one's conciousness outside the body..

Nice list. I can certainly see why the Mummudrai would be drawn to the X-Mansion now.

Sinister's a telepath? Since when?

Since Inferno when he projected his consciousness into Jean Grey's mind in Uncanny X-Men #243; presumably, he used his same psychic powers to give Madelyne Pryor false memories.

Aah, I've forgotten all about that.

If the Mummudrai is still around during the crossover and in close proximity to Sinister...they could do a lot of damage.

That's why CBR programmed the DDMbot, every time you need an x-fact the DDMbot jumps to the rescue. It's very reliable software. :p

You guys do realize that Mike Carey said on his blog that it's not current psychic mutants that attracted the Mummudrai. Since it's started it's journey from the edge of Shi'ar space long before any of them were born. And since it was traveling at sub-light speeds, it took a long time for it to reach earch. He mentioned it picking up pre-mutant sources of psyhic potential or something. I'd have to find his exact quote. :)

Found it:

"Ann - when Urizen chose his vector he’d have been responding to the telepathic outpourings of proto-mutants in earlier generations. I think when he finally hits atmosphere and heads for the mansion, it’s because of the cumulative psychic residues of Xavier and Jean, as well as becuase of Emma’s presence and that of the Cuckoos. It would show up as a pretty hot locus to a telepathic alien - like a nest of telepaths."

Interesting. So, maybe the "list" is made up of "hot spots" that just continued to get hotter and hotter as Urizen approached. When he left, there were probably only a few telepathics, but then the mutant population blossomed and then was cut down so... If we think of it as a hungry creature that feeds on the heat of these psychic energies, he started off thinking he'd get a buffet, maybe dinner, but now there's the added bonus of dessert as well.

No, the Mummudria isn't there to feast. It's there running from Hecatomb.

...

I took it both ways (okay, that came out wrong, heh). That it was there to escape, but also to "use.* I think it has an ulterior motive. I'm guessing its reasons for "hiding" out isn't exactly...good. But I'm curious, who is/will be the biggest threat here, the M or the Hecatomb?

Or maybe I'll just stop speculating and just read the story. :)

But Ev Teel Urizen's a guy. Perhaps his template is a female? :p

Mike Carey's told us that since Xavier had huge psi-potential and prowess, his Mummudrai, Cassandra Nova had it as well. And since Urizen has tp/with some amount of tk, then it's likely that its template had tk/tp as well.

Or maybe I'll just stop speculating and just read the story.
Wanna read my speculation? :evilsmile

Here's the stuff I asked Mike:

And now, on to the Mummudrai! I’ve got a lot of speculation and questions regarding it as well. I wonder what it meant when it said that Mystique was a better host. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Mystique is a shape-shifter, and thus her brain matter or whatever is a lot more malleable? I’d assumed that it originated from the Shi’ar empire, since it was found on the edge of it, and you just told us that its template was in fact a Shi’ar. Could it possibly be connected to the Shi’ar who was possessed by the Phoenix entity over in Uncanny X-men, Korvus’ ancestor? Also, from the sensory images scene, and the fact it took Urizen centuries to reach the earth, I think that it was the original Mummudrai that started the Shi’ar legend in the first place. I think that the bottle we saw the two astronauts circling was its imprisonment, after it was captured because of all the havoc it caused on the Shi’ar home world, and that they unwittingly released it. From the dialogue, it also seems that it was running away from Hecatomb. Did he unwittingly lead Hecatomb to earth’s doorstep, or was earth already on the menu? Since it came looking for telepaths, I assume that telepathy or telekinesis is Hecatomb’s weakness. Is Urizen really that much of a "devil" as the solicits tell us it is? There is that bit about a deal with Cable...

Speaking of Hecatomb…How big is this thing? Someone said something at CBR about the shape in the clouds looking like a giant mouth about to engulf the island. Also, when Urizen says it’s come to eat the world, are we talking in the Galactus sense? Seems like some kind of extremely powerful cosmic entity to me, and I’m pretty sure it has a physical form, since you mentioned something about the really crazy way in which Chris Bachalo draws him, and the solicits say that it actually lands on Providence, bringing death to all it touches.

And here's how he answered: (very briefly. :o XD)
No comments about the Mummudrai, but I will say that there's no link to Korvus or to his family tree. The whole backstory is explained more fully shortly. And that's where Cable faces his dilemma...

Hecatomb is as big or as small as he wants to be. He was the cloud that engulfed the Shi'ar scout ship back in #189, but he takes other forms too, as we'll see.

I asked more questions again, but he hasn't answered them yet. Won't post 'em until he does. I kinda feel bad asking him all these questions, especially since I don't really keep them short. =O

Ah, here's the part regarding the Mummudrai and what it wanted from the issue:

EV TEEL URIZEN: The nest. Strong thoughts Strong thinkers I smelled across all the dark Smelled like me
CABLE: Telepaths. You followed a psychic trail to the X-Mansion. Across interstellar distances. Again, why?

EV TEEL URIZEN: Heko The strong thinkers must help me please Must keep me safe For the Hecatomb comes...to eat the world.

So yea, the thing is seeking out telepaths to ask for help...

Yeah, I had the same thoughts as well. But you summed it up better than I did. :o :)

I'm guessing he doesn't want to comment because it'll probably be answered in the next few issues. But it's so not fair because we have to wait a whole month for it. :(

That's more of an overall MU psychic count but it looks pretty accurate.

I definitely wouldn't count people like Nate Grey and Jean since they're currently both dead but if their residual energy fed the new Mummudrai then I guess they would.
