View Full Version : Star Wars anniversary

It seems that a lot of the projects that have been planned for the anniversary have unfortunately been delayed-the 3D release of the films; The Force Unleashed game, and a DVD box set; apparentally due to technology issues and also poor sales of 2006's individual releases of the trilogy.
On the other hand there's still conventions, the 30th anniversary figure line, and the TV shows and Indy IV (Very much the 'sister' films to Star Wars) appear to be on schedule....

I'd prefer that The Force Unleashed (which looks like it could be amazing) be released later and complete rather than a rush-job. It's not too surprising that individual DVDs didn't sell that well, coming so soon after the top-selling trilogy set. And I got than for an absolute bargain, 23 bucks for three movies and the features disc. Even though part of me wanted to wait for something that would include the original versions, I felt it was too good to pass up. I plan on waiting till I've gone over to an HD format to get another version, hopefull a box set, unless another great deal comes along. Until then, I've put the prequels and Clone Wars in the gold box that came the VHS special editions came in. I have to say, it looks really cool on the shelf next to the OT in silver.
Anyway, TV shows should be plenty, hopefully we'll actually see some images pretty soon. And since The Force Unleashed takes place in the inter-trilogy era, same as the live action show, maybe a delay will actually be beneficial to both. if it allows for references to be worked in. I have no doubt that a Star Wars show could garner the same kind of super-attention from die-hard fans as Lost or Heroes, if the producers opt to include rewards for watching that closely.

I don't particularly liked being reminded that it's been 30 years since Star Wars anyways...

I think there'll be a DVD release this year. It's already been rumored, but they'll probably make the actual announcement at the "Star Wars Celebration IV" in May.
However I suspect the announcement may well amount to: "Star Wars on Blu-Ray!"
Then again, Lucasfilm has been strangely quiet about everything in the last year or two. I wouldn't be surprised if GL has been cooking up the "Definitive" collector's-mega-deluxe-ultimate-special-director's-unrated-limited-edition boxed set of all six films.
Something to tide over the regular DVD fans until he releases the "even more special" boxed set on Blu-Ray in a couple years.

Basically everything tied to the Force Unleashed video game (toys and the comic) have also been delayed.
I've heard virtually nothing about a new DVD set or 3-D releases of the films thru the usual SW channels (theforce.net basically) but I suspect announcements to be made at Celebration IV anyway.
And honestly, Celebration IV is gonna be awesome just for the fact that you can actually be amidst SW freaks and geeks galore *the day of* Star Wars' 30th anniversary.
I'll be there. :D

^Lucas said there would be 3-D releases of the films in interviews around the time "Sith" came out. However Steve Sansweet later said "Not anytime soon" at a fan Q & A session.

You must live on the west coast somewhere. When the cons were in Indianapolis everyone I know went. Out in LA, the only people I know who going are a couple who are both doctors. Have fun, bastard.

Yeah, I went to Celebration III, but LA was way too far (and too high-priced) for my tastes this time.

They should release the star wars holiday special in 3D in sensational sense surround sound. See the awesome spectacle that is holographic jefferson starship , hear the beautiful screeching of Princess Leia and see star wars as you never seen it before. ;) :D

Actually, I'm way over on the East Coast (Mass.); and I've been to Celebrations 2 and 3 before this. It's fun, but INTENSE. It's cemented my belief that I go to conventions to remind myself how normal I am.
I'm there all 5 days.....and I know already it's gonna be a show I'm not at 8 hours a day, definitely. Only so much I can take and so much to do. Thankfully, it's in L.A. so there's a TON of other stuff to do nearby.

Honestly, that right there is part of the reason I'm not all that broken up about missing this one. So far there hasn't been anything announced that I'm going to regret not seeing or doing. I was talking to people who went to Celebrations II and III and we were all saying the same thing: there's nothing new at this one.

Yeah, aside from new fanfilms, possibly "previews" of the animated series, and panels discussing different "future products" (though the panels themselves will likely remain in the same format, so to speak), it really is pretty much the same song-and-dance.
Sean was right, it's definitely intense. Though I found a lot of folks at Celebration III to be perfectly normal. ;) It's still almost overwhelming, and it always seems like somewhere in that three days there's a few points where different things you might want to see conflict with each other.
Oh, the one other difference that will make this year's celebration even more hectic: the 24-hour Celebration Store.
Good lord.

My friend actually called me the other day and wanted to schedule our store time at 11pm-1am. I said "Are you *&#$ing nuts?" Then informed him that I've never actually set foot in a Celebration store before so why should I start now when I should be sleeping. :p
This convention center is a LOT bigger, too, so the space issues they had in Indy shouldn't exist here.
I just hope this autograph list really bulks up soon because otherwise I might be spending more time outside C4 than in it... :-/

Darkblade and I roomed at CIII and she had a VIP Pass that got her in early. She went to the store and got me my stuff. She rocks.

Another thing that isn't as good as past celebrations. Although I've reached a point where I've met almost all of the actors who do conventions that I would want to meet. They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel lately. The actor who did the voice of Biggs (it was Garrick Hagon) has been doing cons.

I've gotten a lot of autographs from Official Pix, as well as Wattographs (which focuses more on the 2nd-tier and obscure guys). Sam Jackson, Christopher Lee, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher........hey, at least I don't have to sit in a long line at a con. :p
I was actually happy to see on this guest list that guy from ANH who talks to Vader at the beginning of the movie. Then I realized it how pathetic that was and I actually died a bit inside.

Yeah, I'm not sure there's any "franchise fandom" that elevates it's third thru twelfth-string players as much as Star Wars does. I think you could seriously put the guy that played "third stormtrooper from the left" at one of those autograph tables and people would still line up for him. I can't believe they don't have "Ice Cream Maker Guy" on the autograph list!
I mean, even Star Trek isn't this bad, is it (I speak only in terms of "celebrity guests" mind, not in terms of general fanaticism)? Don't you actually have to have like...a speaking role before they'll put you at an autograph table there?

Sadly, I believe I read that the Ice Cream Maker Guy passed away a few years ago.

And the fact that we both know who "Ice Cream Maker Guy" is and his current status is...almost as sad as Sean's confession.
Maybe more so.
:D
If he were alive and doing cons, Ice Cream Maker Guy would be one of the more popular guests amongst the die-hard fans. The people who say, "Oh look, that's the guy who played Chewbacca" then walk away wouldn't care. But the people like me, who point him out every time they watch Empire, we'd love the dude.

What about Stormtrooper Who Hits His Head? I bet he gets all the chicks.
Well, unfortunately the only known person inside of the Stormtrooper armor was a Stunt Coordinator named Peter Diamond. He passed away last year. He also played the Tusken Raider Luke fought on Tattooine.

IIRC, Mr. Diamond also donned the Darth Vader armor in ESB, during some sequences of the first Vader/Luke fight.

Oh, one more thing:
ICE CREAM MAKER GUY!!!!!!!! (http://www.geocities.com/ocb75/)
You're welcome. :p

A guy named Bob Anderson was the Vader stunt man/swordsman. Mr. Diamond was, as far as I know, always a stormie, scout trooper or Tusken Raider. At least those were the pictures he sold at cons.

You're right, my bad.
In the world of Star Wars, guys like Bob Anderson and Peter Diamond are very.......plain names, aren't they?
Yeah, but they're still names and we know them. How many other movies are there were fans can name the stuntmen?

The Postmaster General must be a really big Star Wars fan. Not only are there R2 mailboxes in some cities, but you can vote on a stamp. I want to see Storm Troopers adorning my letters!

When Bush's World Order takes over, they'll be issuing you your mail in your 8x10 cell. So just wait a few months and you'll see.
Wait, what? ;) :p

I absolutlely love the fact that every article about these mailboxes includes a paragraph about how stealing US Postal Service mailboxes is a federal offense.

Isn't that great? ;) I'm actually almost surprised that some of them haven't been stolen yet. Not that SW Fans are a bunch of criminals, but surely there are a few of us out there crazy enough to try.
However I forsee a lot of these getting auctioned off somewhere after the promotion is over.....

After those last three shocking things that were meant to be passed off as movies/storytelling, I can't bring myself to give George any more of my money. I saw the original 3 when I was a kid, and I loved them, but I can't even watch the original 3 now, these latest experiments have left such a bad taste in my mouth.
I helped make you rich George... and this is how you repay me.
