I'm new to this thread, and I'm going to give you guys an Introductory Thread (so you can get to know me) after I'm done with this, but I must get this out...If DHP doesn't do Abe Sapien's voice again for Hellboy 2&3, I'll blow up my house! Doug Jones did a good job in all, but David's voice is PERFECT for Abe.
BRING BACK MR. PIERCE!!! :)

Welcome to the forum, kongisking :)
Expressin' admiration for an actor's voice talent is a fine thing...
Everyone has preferences--
I expect people to respect each others faves.
Play nice, everybody :)

I thought I had read DHP wanted Doug Jones to do the voice next time and it was already decided he would.
I thought they both did a fine job doing the voice work for Abe.

I personally find Doug Jones's Abe Sapien to be superior. He's really given the character both a strength and eloquence that has been Sapien's trademark.
By the way, did anyone see how much ass he kicked in Blood and Iron?

DHP asked to be uncredited in Hellboy I because he felt the performance belonged to Doug Jones. He was brought in originally because of studio insistence, but I think even he is happy to have Doug Jones voice Abe Sapien in forthcoming Hellboy movies. I don't have a source for that sentiment, so I can't confirm it, but I'm quite certain that Doug Jones is doing the voice himself with DHP's best wishes.

Sorry, Kongisking ... but Doug will be playing ALL of Abe in HB2. David did a fantastic job, and he is a remarkable actor, but I have to say that I couldn't be happier that Doug will finally do the voice of the character he worked so hard to bring to life in the first film and has voiced magnificently in the two animated films. But please don't blow up your house!;)
Other than that, welcome to the board!

DHP has some great inflection on some of the lines in HB1.
HELLBOY:
Look at them ugly suckers, Blue. One
sheet of glass between them and us.
ABE
Story of my life.
However, Most of the time I found myself hearing DHP as DHP. Doug's voice is an unknown to most of us. He wasn't on an emmy winning sitcom for many years where our ears are attuned to his tone. Doug did a fine job with the animated movies and was reccomended for the part by Ron.

Start looking for a new house, kong. :evilsmile
I really was annoyed by DHP voice as Abe. I think they tried to play up the difference between HB and Abe and the voice was another example of it. I "hear" them in the book with similar, normal tone voices. DHP's long run as Niles dies make his voice more recongizable and they may have help to annoy me too.
Doug did fine in the animated versions and Pan's Labyrinth ( I guess since I couldn't understand the foriegn lingo) so he deserves a shot at Abe.

I thought Hyde Pierce was wonderful, fit Abe perfectly, and I'm a little sad that he won't be doing Abe's voice in the sequel. It's a continuity thing.
That said, I think Doug did a fine job on Abe in Sword of Storms, but he was excellent in Pan's Labyrinth.

IMHO Doug's voice is fine for the movies (animated or otherwise). In fact, with Blood and Iron I was so used to Doug's voice that it didn't really occur to me that DHP had even done the voice at one point- no offense to DHP.

I'm actually glad David Hyde Pierce is not doing the voice for the next one. I kept hearing him as David Hyde Pierce and not as Abe Sapien (to echo Petersen's sentiments).
I only watched a bit of Sword of Storms, but I thought that Doug Jones' voice work was very good from what I saw. I even thought it wasn't remarkably dissimilar to DHP's, so I don't think it'll be a big deal to change the voice-work back to Doug for the second film.
kongisking - sorry you have to blow up your house. sucker. ;)

I thought David Hyde Pierce did a great job, enough that I never even thought of the actor. He WAS Abe. However, Doug Jones' Abe delivery in the animated movies is just as good. He ought to be fine for the live action as well.

David Hyde Pierce will always be one of my favourite actors, and that's largely because of his role as Niles Crane. Because I came into the comics through the movie, I didn't mind so much who played who, because I didn't know the characters. However, after reading Hellboy and BPRD, I don't think DHP's voice suits what I imagine Abe's voice to be. He's a talented man, but I'm happy with Del Toro's decision to cast Doug Jones as Abe's voice in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
Through the animated movies, Doug Jones gave Abe more personality through vocal means that I felt lacked some in the live-action film. Suddenly, Abe wasn't just a nerd, but more an intelligent and capable agent who could kick ass when needed. It's hard to compare, because seeing Abe as a cartoon certainly isn't the same as seeing Abe on the big screen. However, if Doug Jones makes the successful move from voice-acting to applying his voice with his physical performance, I believe we'll finally have Abe Sapien complete in the film world.
All I can tell you is I hope your insurance covers this.

Both DHP and DJ are good actors, but listening to Doug in SOS I feel he can ''carry the tune'' from here on......

While you are entitled to your opinion, I must respectfully disagree with you in this case.
As good as David was in the movie, after getting to know Doug over the years AND hearing him as Abe in the Animated stuff... he (Doug, I mean) IS Abe and always will be to me.
You have to read some of the interviews to really understand how much Doug cares about the character and how much it means to him. To most actors, a role is a role and nothing more. But this case... not so much, it's something special. Why else do you think David -willingly- refused credit and to do promotional work?
It's rare to see an actor care so much about a character and put time and thought and heart and soul into the role, and I for one will be cheering the day I hear him voice Abe not in a cartoon, but on the silver screen.
But trust me when I say this: You are not the only one who wants David back in the sequel (I've come across a few who are quite vocal about this), but ultimately the studio -and possibly Guillermo himself- will have the final say.

I loved both voice performances. (If Doug doesn't get to do it by some freak circumstance) I'll be quite happy with whomever gets the gig.
I think David Hyde Pierce's performance suited Abe in the first movie, and I quite liked it. However, I still would prefer to have Doug Jones provide the voice of the character, based on his work in the animated films, and the fact that we've heard that Abe will have more of an action-oriented role in the second film. I think Doug is more suited to that than David Hyde Pierce would be.

Thanks for the welcome, guys! And also, thanks for enlightening me to the fact that Mr. Pierce WON'T be back for Hellboy 2&3. Shoot! That's very dissapointing. Oh well, I guess Doug could probably pull it off I guess. Just to let you guys know, I have not been able to get my hands on the Animated Hellboy movie's so I don't know how good Doug is. Is his voice similar to Pierce's in any way? Please tell me.
P.S. Is there a thread on this site for newcomers to introduce themselves? TheRaider.Net (an Indiana Jones fansite) has one, and that site is very similar in design to this site, but I can't find a Newbies thread here. Any help, guys?

I believe DHP based his vocal performance on Doug's, which had been recorded.
So DHP was imitating Doug Jones in the movie. Doug Jones is just less Niles-ish, so you don't stop to wonder if maybe Abe might ask Hellboy if he'd like a glass of sherry.
There isn't an introductions thread. You just introduce yourself, which you have already done! Welcome!

I personally liked David Hyde Pierce's voice in the first movie. It really captures Abe's character.:)

Doug did the original Spanish voice in Pan's Labyrinth but was later dubbed.
So that's not his voice you're hearing in the movie.

Welcome kongisking, I liked DHP's voice in the movie but I really listened to Doug's performance in Sword of Storms [In my humble opinion] he deserves the whole part.........The ''I Shall Lurk No More'' thread on the second page may be a good starting point of introduction....all the best.

Plus, I would imagine even that voice was heavily modulated in Post to further enhance the creepiness quality.

I like both Davids and Dougs voices for Abe, personally I do think it is better that Doug does it because come on... he's already doing it in a costume why not do the voice work?
it suits his look so well to.
Also I haven't seen Blood and Iron yet... I may hold off till I get it in my hands in May I believe its released? either way... rather wait for the real thing.
but just a thought... this may not be the place to mention it but... will these animated movies ever make it to Blu-Ray? i'd LOVE to see these movies in hi-def, haha. :D

After hearing Doug in Blood and Iron, my vote is for Doug.
Blood and Iron will be out on DVD June 12. It was pushed back because of a huge promotion that Best Buy is going to do. Best Buy was very happy with the results of the Bust Ups promotion.
Blue Ray? HD TV? All I know is that we created them in hi def (extra headaches as it turns out). I would guess the release would depend on the perceived popularity. Are there enough sales of the DVD to show high interest in the animated Hellboy, and will that translate into new Hi Def buys.

I'm dying to know what the Best Buy promotion is gonna be!
