Remember when they didn't think twice about killing someone? Ah, those were the days...
I'll be going to see this opening night, and though I'm sure I'll enjoy moments of it, part of me will continue to miss the original dark and gritty incarnation of those lovable shellbacks.

I remember when I was a kid I loved the cartoon then one day my mom took me to Toys R Us (I think it was 1988?) and I saw the toys for the first time. I never even saw a commercial for them on TV. It might just have been the happiest moment of my life. My mom bought me Donatello and I didn't put him down until I had to go to school the next day.

I'd go see the movie, but I'm fresh out of dinero for entertainment. :(

When I was around the same age, the movie had just come back to our town on second-run at the theater. I wasn't able to go the first time, because the lines were literally around the block, so this time I was pumped.
The movie was one of the best film experiences of my life, and I was excited as hell.
I got home, completely pumped and wishing I could see it again, when Surprise! My parents had just rented it from the video store.

It, too, was one of the best experiences of my life.

Hey!
I pitched to Murphy a couple of years ago and he shared my stuff with Laird.
Peter Laird didn't really find anything of mine usable but it was a nice experience on the whole. I got sent a HUGE STACK of comp books. Probably one of the best rejection experiences I've had.
And I gather that Laird is especially protective of his characters because of issues he has with their handling in the 90s so I knew it was a hard pitch going in.

I've always despised them. I hated that my brother and several of my friends loved them.
The concept is just too ridiculous. Probably why I also hate Detective Chimp. I mean, it's like someone just took <random animal> and just paired it with <random occupation>. What's next, a llama chiropractor?

TMNT was created as a parody of/tribute to Frank Miller's work, particularly his Ronin and Daredevil work.
Detectives are interesting to read about. Add the "Chimp" and the follow-up response is, "How's THAT gonna work?" Add that a lot of people LOVE chimps and simians have historically made comics sell.
Llama Chiropractor doesn't have that kind of tension in the concept.
Bounty Hunters are interesting. Bunnies are cute. Bounty Hunter Bunny has that kind of tension.

Well, Shell and I took the princess to TNMT.
It was okay. I wish it had been a little funnier and a little less like one of those simulator rides you see in the mall.
Overall, a cute movie which should move a lot of toys off the shelf and hopefully rekindle interest in TMNT as a franchise.

Spoiler free...
But...
I thought it was interesting that several elements which might have been plot twists were either covered by narration or dialogue.
I felt a bit cheated at first but I quickly realized that:
A) adults would have seen through the "plot twists" quickly
AND
B) small children might have gotten lost
The result is a fairly straightforward romp with some nice character-driven moments.
I'm not sure how Laird would feel about a couple of the choices made. Particularly the hints at the end or the reference to "Bebop & Rocksteady" (at least, that's what I heard) in the closing credits rap.
SPOILER TIME
The overall piece was fairly faithful to Laird's TMNT, fairly faithful to the movies, somewhat faithful to the old cartoons (the van and the pizza sight gag) and, oddly enough, VERY faithful to the spirit and style of the Archie comics I grew up on.
Visually, the characters seemed most true to their Archie forms. The story itself didn't focus much on Shredder (which the Archie comics, like the Mirage stories, did not) but the Archie comics did tend towards:
- Stories of justice/political/corporate corruption.
- Alien villains.
- April as a martial artist.
- Intergalactic threats.
- Latin America/rainforests focus.
- Raph in black. (Raph had a black costume he used off and on through TMNTA.)
Furthermore, the bat villain reminded me of Wingnut and if I could adjust ONE thing in this film, I'd base the 13 Monsters on the Mighty Mutanimals or at least have Wingnut and Screwloose incorporated as two of the thirteen. I think it would have added some flavor and personality to the monsters. As it stood, I feel like only the dineralien truly had a chance to shine.
Actually, thinking about it, I would have drawn from various sources for the extradimensional monsters.
But I would have included Wingnut and Screwloose as two (since they were extradimensional anyway). I would have included a Triceradon (or at least a savage cousin of a Tricerdon). And I would have included Slash (who was an alien and not a mutant in the Archie universe).
I think the familiar faces would have been a nice touch for fans and would have been more engaging for kids.
I'm fairly forgiving about anything people might regard as "plot holes" in a movie like this but since Winters was there when the monsters escaped and since it was the most pivotal moment in his life, I think he'd notice the substitution of Leonardo for a monster.
However, if Slash was one of the monsters then the substitution angle would have been easier and it would have allowed for a another Turtle vs. Turtle showdown.
Overall, great flick. 3.5 stars. I think they could have made the story a bit less complicated given how straight forward it was and made the monsters more charismatic, giving them nicknames and personalities. But very enjoyable and expertly performed.
My hat is REALLY off the Jim Cummings, the only person returning to the franchise from the Fred Wolf incarnation. (He was Leatherhead, the fill-in Shredder for James Avery and many of the background characters.) I think he played at least four or five roles in this film. Take out Kevin Smith, SMG, the Human Torch, Mako, Patrick Stewart and the Turtles and Cumming voiced virtually every other role -- and I don't think people would pick up on that unless they were familiar with his stable of voices or they knew going in. He is Mel Blanc's spiritual successor.
His breakout role was probably as Darkwing Duck or both of the leads on Bonkers. But he is also Pegleg Pete, The Tasmanian Devil, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Ed the Hyena AND Jeremy Irons' singing double as the voice of Scar in The Lion King. He's involved in almost every Disney project and he's been on just about every American-produced cartoon you can think of at least once... Playing roles ranging from Bill Clinton to Ghengis Khan to Aesop to Long John Silver to MODOK.
I'm a big fan of his; a cartoon that hasn't had at least one Jim Cummings guest voice probably isn't worth watching. Which is not to say every cartoon he's worked on is great or that he's necessarily what makes the show great but he's the Bizarro Ted McGinley of cartoons.

OK, plot holes time: wasn't the missing monster the little guy that Raph battled in the diner? How did it become the huge van chasing thing later in the movie?

I'm sorry the last time I cared for TMNT was in the early 90's . I'm not really into it anymore . But the Franchise appears to have been saved as TMNT took in $ 25 million opening week. Its budget is $ 34 Million so by next week it'll cruise on by it and turn a pretty solid profit justifying a sequel.

1... no they showed him captured in the tubes.
2... no clue... perhaps the stars getting ready to align woke them?

Hey... The turtles had their OWN Toad counterparts. Napoleon, Gengis and... The third one?
But I liked the Mutanimals for what they were. And they DIED in an Archie comic. And as far as I knew, never came back. That's pretty bold when you think about it.
And their enemy, Mr. Null, was basically the Devil crossed with an alien. So this alien demon killed off most of the TMNT's friends IN AN ARCHIE COMIC.
I dug the extended cast the TMNT got in the Archie books. The Cyborg cat guy who betrayed Don to become Verminator X, Armaggon (who used Hitler's brain to take over the world), fairie merpeople from the post-Global Warming future, Cudley the Cowlick (a disembodied transdimensional cow head), Raph's relationship with Ninjara, Cherbae and her quest for the Turnstone...
I'm not sure that it was all that much less mature that the Mirage run (and maybe that's part of why Laird has discussed revisiting the TMNT MEET TMNT project a few times, the planned crossover between the Mirage and Archie Turtles). It was more... super-hero. Although it really read like an all-ages Vertigo book.
The art was cartoony and a few cartoon characters appeared now and again but characters died and changed and evolved. They had relationships. They dealt with real world issues.
The interesting thing is that the run started out as a straight adaptation of the Turtles cartoon but stopped midway through adapting the cartoon's second story arc, getting both more serious and more cosmic while developing its cast to be more like the Mirage book.
And it eventually became a plot point that the series diverged from the cartoon.
If anybody remembers the cartoon where Shredder got the triangle shards that allowed him to shrink the Turtles, THAT is where the series diverged, midway in a multipart story. So Baxter never became a fly and eventually Shredder remembered the missing shards and went back for them in the comic, striking a truce with the Turtles in the desert where, as I recall, he killed Krang.
Shredder, AFAIK, didn't necessarily die in the Archie continuity but he retired to a life of meditation before/after killing Krang to pay his debt to the Turtles. (There was some time travel in that story so it's fuzzy for me.)
It's not quite Mirage but if you never read these comics, I'd urge you to track them down.
Not too many comics drawn in the Archie house style that have Nazis, serial killers, time travel, aliens, and environmental and social issues... And the only Archie book I can think of where most of the characters introduced died at some point in the run. Many of the characters appeared very little (if ever) outside the Archie books and most of the memorable ones never got action figures, which spared the book from being the toy ad that the cartoon quickly became.
And one of the few toy tie-ins incorporated the Cyber Samurai Turtles battle mechs into the book's mythology quite seamlessly, if you can imagine that.

Here's the 4-11 on Mr. Null and the Mutanimals:
A businessman wearing a purple leisure suit who was ultimately responsible for the death of the Mighty Mutanimals, when he contracted a group of cyborgs to kill them. The death was highly controversial and somewhat gory as a spread of machine-gun bullets tore the group down. He was also responsible for a 3-part story arc in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles storyline including the horsemen of the Apocalypse; Death, Famine, War, and Pestilence. Null himself seemed to be somehow the leader of the group, giving orders to Death who in turn controlled the other horsemen like puppets. He was also known for giving Michelangelo a horrific vision of the Mutanimals burning in hell; the Turtles' first indication that their furry comrades were no longer. Null seemed to be somehow linked to hell. Originally the character had two small horns projecting from his forehead, and with every new deed of evil he committed he grew more demonic. Eventually he grew larger horns, a demon-like tail, and wings like a bat.

So... Mr. Null (who may or may not be the Devil) apparently killed Mondo Gecko (by sending machine gun wielding assassins after him) and sent him to Hell, along with the other Mutanimals.
In an Archie book.

The Mutanimals massacre was the first time I ever such brutality in a comic book. I was amazed Archie okayed it!
I read TMNT Adventures for years (along with their Sonic title). This was wayyyyy before I got into Marvel and DC, too.
It also had Slash sacrifing himself to keep some alien Tyranid bugs in their comet-like nest (that flew into a star!) while the TMNT escaped!
Archie's Slash *rocked*.
