Okay, Tony... Didio and Waid spilled the beans at WizardWorld LA, so what can you tell us? Will this be a continuation of Waid & Kitson's stories, or are we getting something new? Who's the artist (Calfiore?)? How long are you going to be on? Will Dawnstar be back? (You still owe me for Justice not joining the Exiles during World Tour ;) )

Man, it's a good time to be a fan of yours and DC.

I can't say I'm familiar with Tony Bedard's work, but I'm looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the title, which is (as is obvious from my sig) my favourite comic book. Welcome aboard.

I can't say I'm familiar with Tony Bedard's work, ....

Actually, Matthew, you kind of are already.;) He co-wrote issues 21-22 with Mark Waid. I've heard that his "Exiles"(Marvel) book was pretty good. My first experience with his writing(and the reason I want to see him write Legion) was the Crossgen "Negation" series.

He handled a large cast of diverse characters in a sci-fi space opera that was vastly superior to most books coming out at that time, or since. If you get a chance to read it, I don't believe you'll be disappointed. The only thing that could make this better would be if his collaborating artist, Paul Pelletier, was drawing.

Incidentally, Mark Waid co-wrote the first two issues of "Negation" with him...talk about coming around full circle.

I remember that, but I figured since I couldn't isolate Waid's contributions from Bedard's, it didn't make me any more familiar with his stuff. Anyway, everything I've heard has been good, so at the moment I have no trepidation at all.

Congrats on getting one of your dream gigs. Hopefully you can parlay it into a longer run. if it helps, I'm going to add your first issue of LSH onto my pull to give it another pre-sale. I've been buying it off the shelf for a while.

Thanks, folks! I'm very excited about this, and I only hope I don't let down everyone.

LEGION fans can be a very ardent bunch, though I think there are several subsets of Legion fanhood and they all seem to be at each other's throats! Each incarnation has its own set of fans, and many feel that their's is the only true Legion. So I'll proceed with my story and do my best to avoid posting about it...except for here!

Just make sure Saturn Girl is the clear prime mover and shaker in the Legion and you'll be just fine. :D

The best rule I've seen about this is that your first exposure to the Legion is your favorite.

If you started reading the 5yL stuff, there you go. If you started reading the DnA stuff, there you go. I read the post ZH stuff first and that's my truest love when it comes to the Legion, though I have gone back to a year or two before the Levitz run began and read everything following.

Unless you are cherry picking from every era in a Legion Forever type series(which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world), you're right in that you can't please everyone.

But if you write a great story, people will read it, regardless of the take or the version. It's pretty much that simple. And there are certainly common themes that run through almost every take, but you know that. You're a fan.

So I'm looking forward to it.

Some Legion fans are annoying me very much at the moment with that attitude. They don't understand that all versions of the Legion are true versions. But there are some of us out there who are looking forward to your work and just want to see you cut loose with some good comics.

Tony you will be fine as long as you accept the Levitz/Giffen legion as the bible. Forget that going to the source teenager stuff. Waid did it already (twice and it feels like it was 4 times).

Seriously, good luck. And doesn't Blink remind you of a Cockrum Legion design? I loved Negation & Exiles.

I agree with the view that all the Legion incarnationss have their own merits. While "my" Legion probably remains the Levitz/Giffen version, and my faves include Mon-El, Timber Wolf (with the big sideburns and wolf logo) and Wildfire, I also have a thing for the original Silver Age version. I like the old costumes, and I like that the current incarnation harkens back to those costumes in many ways. I also like the Cosmic Boy/Saturn Girl/Lightning Lad triad at the heart of the group. And I like the Superboy inspiration.

Comics, especially ones as venerable as the Legion, undergo chamges and revamps all the time, but I think we can embrace all the best aspects of these various versions.

Anyhow, we'll see if I can't hit on a few of those old aspects in my run.

I'm personally of the opinion that a Superboy inspiration is fine, but actually having Superboy there is a big mistake. My favorite LSH battles (not involving cracking noises and Projectra) are the ones where a bunch of the lesser powered members have to work together to defeat a stronger foe.

It's tough enough to give attention to such a big cast as it is. Toss in a character who is larger than life like Superboy and it becomes "Superboy and..." instead of "The Legion of Superheroes including..."

But then my favorite runs are the post-ZH(but pre-DnA, though I did love how they used Kon), Levitz' and Giffen's 5YL until the kids show up again, and none of those are Superboy heavy in the least.

thorionthei
03-22-2007, 11:49 AM
I agree Matthew I never was into Superboy much in the Legion. I mean I liked him but I never needed him. I like all the other characters more.

Now isn't it impossible to have Superboy anyways at this point? ;) I mean unless Tony brings back some Superboy. The way pre-crisis Legion members have been popping up in the JSA one never knows?!

Spill the beans Tony! Give us a bone man? What is going on in the JSA Legion wise? Will that affect this title ever? (i know i won't get an answer but I tried)

Matthew E
03-22-2007, 01:35 PM
Actually there are legal problems with Superboy at the moment, because Jerry Siegel's estate has some claim on the character. This has been causing trouble for the Smallville TV show and the Legion cartoon. So whatever Superboy presence the Legion has is going to be kept on a low flame until that gets sorted out.

Funny, but I'd also love to work on a L.E.G.I.O.N. series. That was one of my favorite books, and I think Vril Dox is among the very best characters in all the DC pantheon.

As for what I'll do in my LSH run, I want to pay off on the long-running election for Legion Leader, on Supergirl's future with the Legion, on how the Wanderers anbd Sun Boy's Terror Firma crew will coexist with the Legion...and yet all of this will be addressed through smaller sub-arcs forcusing on three or four Legionnaires at a time.

And some butts will be kicked, too.

Well, not for me. The first I read was the post Zero Hour Legion of Super Heroes. I became a massive Legion Fan and started collecting a ton of back issues. The Levitz/Giffen era is my favourite, though I love what Mark Waid did with Legion most recently, they characters are fresh and brillant. I actually care for Sunboy and Dreamgirl, I never did before. And Starboy actually has a personality.

Tony,

Will there be the sort of humor found in the first 10 issues or so, and the absolutely brilliant lettercol?

They *really* need to bring back that lettercol.

I did notice that the extra page count stopped right around the time you mention. I really want to believe that it, and the lettercol, was an idea they wanted to make work, but that became unfeasible as Infinite Crisis and 52 took up more and more of Waid's time. Alternatives are too depressing to contemplate.

Tony Bedard
04-27-2007, 05:52 AM
Yeah, we haven't been doing a lettercol, but I'll see about amping up some humor. I hadn't made a special effort on that score, but I usually sprinkle in a joke or two, anyway. Mostly I'm trying to resolve a couple of major plot threads. You'll see what they are.

As for issue 29, we pinch-hit for Waid and Kitson and ended up with an issue I'm very pleased with.

thorionthei
04-27-2007, 07:33 AM
Tony, quick question. This issue I am guessing was plotted as the end of the Waid run? Did Waid plot it and you do the script?

Just wondering. The reveal of the Dominator being behind it all so he can create chaos and make the Dominators stronger down the line via evolution seems like it was part the last story, etc.

thanks

Tony Bedard
04-27-2007, 03:08 PM
Mark and I have a very comfortable collaborative relationship, so much so that I forgot who did what. I know I wrote that whole issue myself, but it is certainly informed by what Mark was doing and where his storyline was going. The whole idea was to insert an issue that kept the Dominator War storyline moving forward. Due to a variety of reasons, they needed help, and I was happy to provide it. So while it wasn't as clean-cut as Mark plotted and I scripted (in which case it would've been credited that way), Mark did suggest an issue from the Dominator viewpoint, and after checking out what he was doing, I incorporated a bunch of his ideas, so in a way Waid's all through that thing. Does that make sense?

Anyhow, I love Waid. he's a great guy, a great writer, and without him I'd still be editing. Not that editing is a bad job, but writing is pretty darn cool!

Things I liked?
The teams. Starboy got some respect there.(kind of) The offer to the Wanderers and Terror Firma. Timberwolf, Shadow Lass, and Violet make an awesome team! Lallor!

I really liked Tenzil in this role. Having him be a funny supporting character versus a silly member is smart.

Things I didn't like? The art! Man i really didn't like it. The pacing seemed off. The transition between Timberwolf's team on Earth and Lallor? Could've been done better. The issue certainly didn't flow smoothly. Were the percentages wrong on the voting? Got confused between Lightning Lad and Lord. Vi's costume changed in one panel but that goes along with my art complaint.

I am looking foward to Mr. Calero to see if things are more smooth!

Tony,

Just read #31. I liked it. The quest story is off to a good start and you did a fine job with the characters. They "sounded" just right. But please tell me the election results were a mistake! AARRGHH!!! I feel like Lightning Lad, I'm not exactly HER biggest fan at the moment. He and Saturn Girl kick her butt in the next issues, right? Right?

The others you selected for the missions are some of my favorites. Thank you for the matter eating prosecutor and the bouncing assassin (???!!). Who is Big Brain? There are a number of big brain characters in Legion lore, I can't place this one.

One of the few negatives other than the election results (GAAH!) was the glaring mistake on page 16 where two lookalike characters speak each other's dialogue. Not your fault as scripter but kindly bonk the guilty party and editors on the head for me.

Looking forward to you and Dennis Calero collaborating on the next issues. L.L.L.

Well with Lallor around I wonder if that's Evolvo Lad. He could be part of that rebel team we saw.

As for Supergirl? Well she obviously got the celebrity vote from those darn teeny bopper alien fans!

A thousand years from now, people do everything 110% -- even voting!

in the current day, I apparently do my math at about a 10% level.

That mistake is purely mine. Don't know why I didn't check it, but maybe this is why I write for a living, instead of doing rocket science!

On the other hand, my son is on his math bowl team, so maybe that stuff skips a generation.

Tony, you plan on using the Encyclopedia Galactica? I think it could've worked nicely this latest issue with them going to different locations. Plus it would give us some insight in Lallor...which we know little about this boot.

I'm willing to chalk it up to the "anything but Brainy" votes.

Okay so tony just so you know legion of super-heroes was one of the first ongoings i picked up when i got into comics (trys to figure out how long he's been reading comics by deviding the number of lsh issues by 12.) crap math is no fun can i be fraction lad. anyways i have been here since the beginning. am a big fan of the series and I'm hoping you do good work. When bendis stopped writing Daredevil and Brubaker picked it up i nearly quit but after the first arc i was glad i didn't. I hope i get to say the same with you. good luck on your run. can he have a really cool invisible lad story. he was kind of our turo guide through the first part of the series

invisible Kid is in my stories, but not a feature player, alas.

Brainac 5 is central to my 6 issues. We also get a spotlight on Star Boy, Sun Boy and Mekt Ranzz, then on Timber Wolf, Atom Girl and Shadow Lass, and finally on Supergirl, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.

I'm being true to the current version of the Legion, but there are lots of tips of the hat to previous ones. Some folks feel that the various incarnations of the Legion are incompatible. I don't. I love them all in their own way.

Hopefully, this will yield something you like.

I noticed a mistake in issue 31, page 10. The speech bubbles for Garth and Mekt are reversed. Garth is the one saying "You always were a sore loser, Garth", and Mekt says "Seriously, Mekt!"

Looks like you will be helming some of the books I have been reading since last year. I wish you the best on SG & LSH, SG, and BoP. Hopefully you have a great story that will have a lasting impression. Good luck Tony.

I was kinda disapointed Supergirl was elected , but I guess it makes sense! It was entertaining, though the art was a big letdown.

In light of the Newsarama interview with Dan Didio, re: the explanation behind the initial teaser pic for Countdown, I've gotta ask you: Do you know who/the circumstances of the death of a Legion member?

Y'know it's not too late to work it into the story. Brainiac 5 actually received minus 3 percent of the vote due to write-ins for "anybody but Brainy". He rigged the election results in order to maintain his dignity but people are so busy thinking about Supergirl's landslide and Cosmic Boy's crimes, nobody has noticed yet. Except for Tenzil, who's keeping his mouth shut.

Just a thought. :D

Very nice job by both you and Dennis Calero on S&LSH #32. Any chance you guys will be sticking around a little longer than six issues?

Tony this issue rocked! It was one of the best issues of this entire series. Love the Children of the Corn Winath thing. Love the new Validus myth stuff here! Really liked the art as well.

Just finished #32 a few minutes ago. Good story. Bravo. I like having a main story arc broken up into smaller ones, too. This was every bit as good if not better than your previous LoSH fill-ins and co-writes.

And who said Supergirl returns to the present?
Even though it doesn't say it in the current solicitation, it does say she's leaving the Legion. She has to return to the present, doesn't she?

Mr. Bedard:

I hope that all the hoopla about Jim Shooter hasn't distracted anyone from the fact that you (and Dennis Calero) are doing an excellent job on this comic book. I'm really enjoying it and I know I'm not the only one; I'm going to be sorry to see you go.
