GB should hit "cult classic" status in no time at all...
I once worked in a pet store, in the late 80's...
This total weirdo-stoner walks in, and offers the owner 5k to get him a Tazmanian Devil...
(On the lives of my 3 kids, true story)
The owner was this really great old guy, and he tried to explain that it just couldn't be done,
in a way that you would explain it to a 6 year old...
Psycho-boy pulls out a huge wad of bills, and says he'll pay cash, if it's a matter of "connections"...
I told my friend, who worked in the pizza place next door, and we laughed for weeks over it...
That's why the whole "Lion/"Karate Monkey" thing almost made me pass out laughing...
-"Dante & Dr. Shaklu" are 10x better characters than "Jay & Silent Bob"...
-"J.P." and "Alex" were more pathetic, than "Clerks Dante", but funnier...
-"Jeff" is a better smart-ass friend, than "Randall"...
-Video game challenges in the break room, beat Star Wars discussions...
-"Lara Croft" OWNS "Death on the toilet"
"GB" is just as quoteable...
Besides, Kevin smith is overrated...
IMO, "Mallrats" was better than "Clerks"...
I either don't know how to, or am not allowed to do a poll, so post your opinions...

I have to admit, that I didn't think I would, or want to like Grandma's Boy but, despite the obvious plot, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Clerks, I used to love, but upon a recent rewatching, I found it to be really boring. Even though I'd forgotten large parts of it, they still were not entertaining to me.

I watched Clerks for the first time yesterday. And I have to say it was a steaming pile of shit. Boring as hell and in no way funny. I can't see how people like this movie.

To be honest I haven't seen Grandma's Boy, so I'm not going to actally vote. Though I've seen enough previews and clips to know I don't want to. Plus a friend of mine saw it and described enough to me to know I just wouldn't like it.
Basically, Grandma's Boy was a mainstream frat/stoner comedy invloving video games. Sure, Clerks was partly a stoner comedy, but that was pretty much regulated to Jay and Silent Bob. There was a dramatic story behind it all.
Plus, you really can't compared the two films. Clerks was done on a shoe string budget by a nobody. Grandma's Boy was produced by Adam Sandler and friends. If anything, maybe you could compare Clerks II or moreso Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back to Grandma's Boy.

Clerks is in a whole other class to Grandma's Boy so there's no way I couldn't vote for it. On the other hand, I really liked the underrated Grandma's Boy. Sure, it ain't exactly high art but it was funny as hell and it never claimed to be anything more than an ultra-silly, little stoner flick (hell, it wasn't even pretentious enough to bother with a plot to hang all the silliness on). Plus, as a huge Freaks and Geeks fan, Linda Cardellini was a great added bonus.

I used to love Clerks as well, and then, one day, I stopped being an "emo kid"...

See, to me Clerks would be more for the trendy indy kid, not the whiney angst driven emo kid. Though pretty much everything is called emo nowadays, isn't it?

Smith's movies have a certain type of humour, either you like it or not. it was also a 'period' piece. In that, at the time, not many indy/edgy movies were made in b/w that were not 'art' movies, like Lynch's. Not many movies yet, referenced other movies as geekishly as Clerks.
I found it very funny, I first saw it, back in college, when we heard about it, and it was still kind of an 'underground' movie that was near-impossible to rent b/c someone ALWAYS had it out, and would like, not, return the damn thing. So, you were lucky if you got a copy that was just sitting around in the local vid store.
Edit: oh yeah, this was basically pre-internet time too.

While Clerks hasn't really aged that well (although Clerks 2 is pretty damn funny), Grandma's Boy loses, because it didn't make me laugh.
Not once.
It was that bad.

"Emo" is the 2000's equivalent of the 90's "gay".

Yeah, most of Smith's films have not really have not really held up over time. Grandma's Boy will not stand the test of time either.
However, Clerks and Clerks II are both just awful so I voted for GB.

I liked Grandma's Boy, but it really doesn't compare to Clerks on any level.

I think a more apt comparison would be Grandma's Boy compared to the Broken Lizard movies. I was suprised at how funny I found GB, mostly because of Nick Swordson. "What's up, Silver Fox?"

So basically, some corporate POS where a 'lovable loser' wins out against the weirdo bad guy with the aid of his wacky pals is better than 'Clerks'?
Seriously, this is a piece of cookie-cutter crap.
It's a freakin' mad-lib.
Lovable loser gets in trouble when [a], so he is forced to [b]. This interferes with [c]. A new woman appears on the scene in the form of [d], she's totally hot, but completely out of his league.
Meanwhile, our hero's new situation conflicts with his life in a series of zany mix-ups.
Our hero's arch-enemy [e], who has all the advantages over him, tries to compete with him for the affections of the woman.
An authority figure is completely ineffectual because [f].
A chance occurence leads to our hero getting a chance with the girl, and things are looking good until [g]. The hero's wacky accomplices pull together, and come-up with a zany hare-brained scheme to discredit the rival and impress the girl.
It works! Hooray! Our hero is reunited with the love of his life and the villain is humiliated.
Throw in some tits and drug references and there you are.
Try it at home.

Does 'emo' even have a meaning anymore? Everything is 'emo' now. It's gone from angsty geek to a variant of goth to some kinda artistist whiney kid. You've got both Weezer and Linkin Park as emo. Lord knows how many 'goth' bands are now emo because emo is a cooler name that sells better. Is that damn Fallout boy also emo? There's emo rock. I even heard someone say 'emo pop' for whatever the ---- that is.
It's a blanket term for anyone who whines. It's like goth, geek, indie snob, and crybaby all rolled into one. Someone in another thread said the word 'emo' has become a blanket term that has lost all meaning. Somewhat like calling something 'gay' meaning lame has lost its meaning. (Not saying that it's right, just saying how that became stupidly trendy and rendered a word as somewhat meaningless slang.)
Actually, that Advent Rising comic (written by a guy I know) used 'emo' as a future slang term for 'lame' kinda like what happened to the word 'gay'.
Hell, does 'emo' even have any meaning as a word anymore? It's almost as bad as 'manga'

Manga means something very specific, which is, directly translated, "Japanese comic."
Emo has two definitions, one of which refers to the relatively new musical genre that includes bands like Jimmy Eat World, a style that's an offshoot of punk music with popular music riffs and solipsistic, overly dramatic lyrical stylings. Some bands, such as Linkin Park, as critiqued as sharing emo characteristics due to their underdeveloped and histrionic lyrics.
The other use of the word emo is more derogatory, referring to anything that appears to be effeminate or weak.

Manga means comic. If you get an issue of Fantastic Four and ask a Japanese speaker what it is, he'll tell you it's Manga.
Manga = Comics. Same thing.
Justice League is Manga. Rurouni Kenshin is comics.

That's what I meant, only my brain won't translate words into sentence-like things. So yes, comics = manga, same thing, and manga is the Japanese word, much like bande dessinee is the French phrasing for comic (at least, it is in Quebec).

Yup, 'tis in France to. Sometimes shorted to BD.
But I work in a comic shop, and one of the most annoying things I hear is "Oh, I don't read Comics... I read Manga!"
Usually said in the same voice as... "Oh, I don't read Comics... I read Graphic Novels!"
Both pretentions I take great joy in smashing with a big hammer.
Weeeeeeeeee!
I love my job.

Just saw this movie for the first time the other night and I couldn't agree more. The whole video game aspect felt tacked on. "Here's a ****ty unfunny comedy. You goddamn geeks have to like it because it's about video games! I came away with the impression that no one involved with this movie has ever even played a video game, let alone actually knowing anything about the video game industry.
Movies like Clerks and Office Space are full of exaggeration because comedy is all about exaggeration, but the point is they're exaggerating the truth. There's nothing true about Grandma's Boy and certainly nothing funny.
I did crack a smile when the monkey was driving the car though because, hey, monkey driving a car!

Dude, where've you been. Gay hasn't gone out of style yet. Much to some's chagrin.
