Hi,

Do you know whether it is possible to get all the Amazing Spiderman in colour from issue 1 onwards in some non-exhorbitant format. I see that there are some in Marvel Masterworks but they stop pretty early on.

Any ideas greatfully appreciated.

Well, Masterworks are really the only way to go, unless you want to shell out $50 for 500 issues of Amazing and the Annnuals on a DVD-Rom.

Masterworks are still coming out. One every year. So the number of Spider-Man reprinted is only going up, you just have to be patient to get the whole run of Stan Lee.

Thanks Undead and Crimson. I was hoping there might be some other way than being patient, nevermind. But looking on Amazon volumes 5 and 6 are ridiculous prices, are there any cheaper versions than this?

Well there is this GIGANTIC Hardcover that collects Stan Lee's entire run. Every panel is colored and restored. (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?book_id=6332)

No, it's not Lee's entire run. The Omnibus only contains the entire Lee/Ditko run, not the Lee/Romita.

If you don't mind it not being in print, there's really no way to beat the cheap, cheap price of $50 for the dvd collection. I just ordered it from amazon, and it should come in the mail in a week or two. It's got all of ASM up to June 2006 or something in pdf format which, I believe, brings you right up to the Civil War tie-in. Plus, I think it has a few extra things such as annuals and such. I heard they are working on more collections to cover the other Spider-man series that have sprouted up through the years.

Not really. The only other way are the Essentials and they aren't in colour.

The three choices you have are the DVD, the Masterworks or buying the orignal issues (Which of course is impossible for most of us).

There's always Marvel Tales, which reprint a large chunk of the early Amazing Spider-man issues, maybe first 150. They should be available pretty cheap.

Thanks everyone who responded to this. Don't really fancy the DVD, though thanks for pointing it out, was not aware of it, not too keen on the idea of reading them on screen, stare at a screen all day. Need to make a decision as to whether I go ahead and buy some masterworks, or the lee/ditko book when it comes out, and then hope futher things come out, or not bother in first place avoiding risk of becoming obsessed and shelling out more money than I have.

Yeah, I would recommend old back issues of Marvel Tales as a good, cheap way to get the early issues of Amazing Spider-Man. They're relatively inexpensive, especially if you buy them off of eBay. It's also cool because you get the comics as individual issues rather than as part of a trade....something that I particularly like.

I did this myself and now have every issue of Amazing Spider-Man from #1 through to something like #158...the end of the original Gwen Stacy clone storyline anyway.

I'm not at home at the moment but I have a list of the exact issues of Marvel Tales that you need to get and which issue of ASM they reprint. I'll post it up on here later on.

Marvel Tales rocks!

Barnes & Noble have the Marvel Masterworks in trade format. They're quite a bit cheaper and it looks like they're on sale on their web-site right now. A few anyway.

As promised in my earlier post here is a list of the Marvel Tales issues you need to pick up in order to get the first 150 issues or so of ASM. These are the issues that I got in order to start an ASM collection. I personally like to have these early issues of ASM as individual comic books rather than getting TPB re-prints.

You'll notice from the list that there's 5 or 6 issues of ASM that have never been re-printed in Marvel Tales (to the best of my knowledge), so you'll have to bite the bullet and pick up original issues of ASM for these. Actually this isn't quite as expensive as you'd think if you shop around and you're not too fussed about getting a VG or F condition comic book.

Of course, this list isn't the only combination of Marvel Tales comics you could get in order to own these stories...some issues of ASM have been re-printed more than once in Marvel Tales for instance. Anyway, here it is and I hope it's of some use to someone out there...

Great list.

You can also get ASM #119 & 120 in one of the annuals for a much cheaper option as well, number #12 I think.

Thanks for all the work you went to there Confessor. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Now not sure what to do, I'm kind of lazy so would like to be able to just buy the books if they existed. Now the Marvel Tales idea looks doable but just not sure whether I want to invest all that time in tracking them down. Maybe I'll get the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko omnibus when it comes out in May and then decide from there whether I want to track down the rest.

Personally I cannot wait till the Omnibus.

Luckily I had not yet bought the first 4 volumes of MM so this will save a lot of money.
Now I wonder if Marvel are going to bring out subsequent volumes of Omnibus for Spider-Man...
If that happens I won't need to buy any more ripp-off MMs.
