View Full Version : Do You Read My Comics?
Gail Simone

You guys know I rarely ask questions about my stuff, mainly because it just seems so PATHETIC. :)
But I was at another creator's board, and I came to an odd realization that most of the posters there don't actually read that writer's comics.
Which surprised me a little, til I realized I frequent quite a few boards by writers whose work I'm not currently picking up.
So, just curious...
Are you reading any of my comics, and if so, which ones...and if you don't mind, could you put them in order from least favorite to most, if you get more than one?
Strange as it seems, i really have no idea what most of you are reading that I write, if you're reading anything of mine at all!

Of course.
I remember the first time I read your stuff post-YABS.
It was your Deadpool run, IIRC.
To this day I've got most of your mainstream work (really should get Killer Princesses!).
Every single issue of yours I've enjoyed. Never been disappointed with your work, ever. :D
Okay, I'm starting to suck-up now so I'll stop talking. lol
These days I get Birds of Prey, Gen 13 & Helmet of Fate: Black Alice.
I also have your Villains United, Secret Six, Deadpool, Legion and Agent X runs.

Birds of Prey and Welcome to Tranquility are on my pull list. I have all the BoPs back to #56 and the first three TPB's. I also buy anything that has Black Alice on it.

I began reading your comics after you posted on a forum about CrossGen and Ron Marz called you the 'lovely and talent Gail Simone.' I began posting on this forum when Ron came to CBR. Here, in order, are my favorite Gail Simone comics.
1. Villains United
2.Rose and Thorn
3. BOP
4. Action Comics
I stopped reading comics a year ago so I haven't read Secret Six, Welcome to Tranquility and Gen 13. I do plan on picking up those books as trades again if I ever catch the comic bug again.

I really, really like BIRDS OF PREY, and I enjoyed your far-too-short run on ACTION.
Speaking of short -- ahr-ahr -- the new ATOM book is coming right along (extra points for the gross-out factor with Teddy Hyatt).
And I want to read like...oh, say...at least a hundred more issues of WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY.
Aside from that...nah, you suck! ;)

I read a lot of your stuff, but not all. There are some writers I'd try anything by (Bendis/Brubaker/Jenkins/Hine for example), then there are writers I'm a lot more likely to try than not, but not always. You're category 2, with people like Ellis or Millar :)

to be honest...i only became aware of you because i was already reading BoP...at the time i wasn't reading marvel titles save for the x-men, and i barely read that, so i was unaware of the work you did on dead pool...and now i pretty much read whatever you write, though i'm not reading the atom or gen 13...but that's only because my lack of interest in the characters...aside from what you've done w/ birds, villains united probably my favorite of all your works.

Um...
Holy crap, did ROGER STERN just drop by here?
And did ROGER STERN just say he likes my comics?
Pardon me, everyone, I'll just be passed out over here in the corner.
If this is the real Roger Stern, you are like unto a GOD around these parts, sir. I just reread a ton of old Atom stuff and you KICKED IT LIKE A MULE.
IS that the real Roger Stern?

I read Welcome to Tranquility, which is one of the best new series I have read in the short years I have been reading comics.
Your Secret Six minis get major butt
I have also read many issues of Birds of Prey and Atom, but due to financial restraints I had to drop both of those. And I have your Gen 13 relaunch a shot, but decided after a couple of issues that it wasnt for me (to be fair, I dropped it more due to the art than the writing).
Oh and I loved Deadpool/Agent X and while I'm glad your happy at DC I anxiously await the day you come back to Marvel.

I just reread Gail's Deadpool and Agent X run all in one go last night, and my belly hurts from laughing. It also makes me LOATHE exclusive contracts, as I know that it'll still be quite some time until I can read more about Sandi, Taskymaster, Mary Zero, and Agency X in general.

I'm afraid I'm not reading any of your stuff. Nothing personal -- my tastes in superheroes run more towards "silver age", and most of the modern stuff doesn't really appeal. I tried picking up an issue of Birds of Prey a while back, but I guess it was the middle of a storyline or something, and I couldn't really follow what was going on.
Sorry!

Indeed-o. I guess in order I'd go Birds of Prey, Villains United, and Secret Six--liked them all, but BoP is the fav. I've also been looking for your Deadpool issues and Agent X and have been meaning to pick up Welcome to Tranquility. I haven't because I am poor and live in a Puerto Rican jail cell.

I just unwrap and eat them. Why would I read 'em?
Oh, wait that's candy, not comics.
Lessee, In order of favorites:
Villains United
Secret Six
Birds of Prey
Welcome to Tranquility (curse you, by the way. I swore I wasn't getting any Wildstorm titles)
and lastly The Atom.
P.S. YES that's really Roger Stern. I think he's stalking Busiek. ;)

You know Welcome to Tranquility is my favourite comic currently being published, don't you? Though I just got Shazam - Monster Society of Evil #2 and I think the next couple of months may have a tie for first place.
I also read BoP and Atom. I read the first issue of Gen 13 but it didn't grab me. At some point I'll give it another try. Secret Six I read but didn't really warm up to. If the rumours are true I'll be interested to see how you integrate Harley Quinn, who is fantastic when properly written (Harley Quinn #1-20ish 4 teh win). Black Alice is always great, but I didn't get the thing about her mother. Could have used a footnote "*Alice's mom got zombified in #thiscomic - Garrulous Gail".
Did I miss anything?

See, now, I find that odd. I came to YABS precisely BECAUSE i'm a Simone fan.
As with the artists I like, I was enjoying your work before I knew your name.
BoP.
Secret Six.
Villans united.
Welcome to Tranquility.
Gen13.
Helmet of Fate.
Atom (post Byrne, sorry).
Rose and Thorn.
Action.
I think that's the order and there may be others but my brain is fried.
Hi Gail :)
of COURSE I read all of your books. Pretty much the only things you've written that I haven't read are the Marvel books (so no Deadpool or Gus Beezer for me).
anways. . I enjoy them all, but if you're asking for a list?
from Favorite to "still enjoy" (because if I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be buying it).
1) BoP
2) Secret Six
3) Welcome to Tranquility
4) Atom
5) Gen 13
6) Action
7) Rose & Thorn
8) Killer Princesses
I haven't read the Helmet of Fate: Black Alice issue yet. . but it's in my stack.
I would love to see what you could do on Legion of Superheroes, if you ever get the opportunity! (and all-girl Legion for an issue or two would rock :))

Right now I'm just reading Birds of Prey. Honestly, I was all ready to drop it when Black Canary left, but darn if you didn't figure out how to keep it interesting.
I keep hoping you'll do something with all of the original Charlton Comics characters.

In the past I've read:
BoP
Rose and the Thorn
Villains United
Acton Comics

Of the current stuff you are writing I read, in order of what I like
1) Bop
2) Welcome to Tranquility.
2) Gen 13 (Having trouble deciding which I like better.)
My favorite stuff you write, however, is the Villains United/Secret Six stuff and when more comes out I will pick it up and it will probably go to the top of the list.
I pick up The Atom infrequently. I am having a lot of trouble getting into it. I pick it up every few months or so to see if it will interest me, but I am just having trouble getting into it. Sorry. :(

Have I told you lately how much I absolutely adore you, Gail? ;)
No, seriously. I have since long before you started writing comics and you just had the YABS column here. So, for me, posting here has nothing at all to do with your comics, and EVERYTHING to do with the person.
That said, I do read Gen-13 and I pick up BOP on occasion and have plans to pick up Welcome to Tranquility. I'd buy more, but being a mod for the Vertigo and Image boards here, I feel obligated to spend most of my money there to keep up on it all. And there's only so much money I can spend on comics. :(
Obviously, the solution here is, you need to write more for Vertigo and Image! :D

Currently, I get Bop and all New Atom, and I much prefer the former over the latter. BoP is one of my favorite comics currently, while Atom has been on the chopping block for me since #1.
I also ordered the Black Alice Helmet thingie, but haven't received it yet.
I really loved Villains United.

I automatically pull anything I see your name attached too. You are one of 3 writers I do that with, as it seems everything is consistantly good. While not always my favorite of the week, I have yet to read an issue I haven't enjoyed (except thoise Teen Titans issues but good writing can't save art that bad).

Sorry to say, I don't buy all your comics, as my kids' Montessori school has dibs on my paycheck. But, I am currently reading BOP and Atom. I'd say BOP is the better of the two, but Atom is growing on me. I don't believe I've told you this before, but you write excellent fight scenes in BOP. Most of the time, I find all comics fight scenes dull, but your scenes work for me.

I'm a huge fan of BoP, and the Atom is wonderful and wonky. (I have Tranquility around here, but haven't read it yet. My living room is awash in comics and graphic novels.)
My favorite story of yours is the short story you did for Sexy Chix, the Dark Horse Anthology. I thought that it and Colleen Doran's story were the two best in the anthology.
You have amazing tools for a comic book writer. Comics require brevity in dialogue and captions, but writing that's too short throws off the reading experience. Your work has the perfect balance in that regard. You also seem to bring out the best work out of your artists, a trait I've seen in writers like Warren Ellis.

I pretty much go for anything you write through DC currently.
Villains United/Secret Six is my favorite, and I love the majority of your Birds Of Prey material......Secret Six I would follow religiously, if released, and BOP I'll pretty much always follow as long as you're writing it.
I tried out a couple Chuck Dixon issues of BOP, and found it almost unreadable.......So the only BOP issues I like are the ones you've written.
All New Atom is quite different, but I like it. Didn't care for the overdone silliness in issue #5, with Ryan Choi's friend fighting off the villains with a friggin' broom & the related situation with Ryan trying to mask what was going on in the house from his dad. I found that so goofy and out of context I almost wanted to drop the series.....The dad scenario would have been plausible if he had been drinking beforehand, otherwise it just came off as stupid that he didn't come outside after hearing all that racket.
Aside from those two brief instances in issue #5, I've liked the series, and absolutely love Dwarfstar as a villain......I do have to mention I like All New Atom a bit more since Byrne left. Aside from his teaming up with Claremont on Uncanny X-Men (Which was fabulous), I've never cared too much for Byrne's work.
The only Action Comic issue of yours I've read is the one with Black Adam vs Superman, which was alright.
I haven't read any of your other works, so I can't comment on them.

Uhm, yeah, no?
Sorry to be the downer, but I'm still stuck in the middle of nowhere.
On the other hand, once I get back, there's a comics shop I have to hit up, and see if I can find
1) Your Deadpool run. I'm a deadpool freak. I don't know why. Maybe it's the tragic/antihero thing, where writers are so unappologetically /mean/ to Deadpool that I love. That, and I read this one issue back when the book was starting, when I had no money, sitting at a friend's house, where deadpool tracked down some serial killing cheerleaders, and they said to him on the phone that he was just like them, he killed for fun.
He replied 'No, I kill for fun and Profit!'
So, yeah, I get that sort of dark stuff I guess.
2) BoP I plan to catch up on your runs, maybe waiting for trades.
3) Tranquility. I bet I can get caught up on that.
4) Secret Six? Probably when it comes out in trade.

I used to read Birds Of Prey, but the wheel fell off the cart a little. I went through a period of financial insecurity and didn't pick up my comics folder for a good 5 months. I had a retailer that new my situation and how long it would take me to pull round.
When I got to it there were issues missing scattered between most of my pull titles, especially of BoP, which was missing around 4 of them. I tried to get the back issues and couldn't find them - and it all as a big sign and stopped reading comics for the most part, other than 52 and Legion. Even those eventually fell away as I opted to move to trades.
These days pretty much the only comic moving me classically is 'Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad', which brings forth the same glitter tingles as Waid's Flash run, which in itself cemented my love of comics in the early 90's.
Gail wise I really did enjoy BoP, especially the Shiva arc - and am going to pick up the new Atom trade when it comes out - sounds like a doozy and a book i'd probably buy anyway if I could find the issues.

I read Birds and Atom. And if there's ever more Secret Six, I'll pick that up, too.

Yes!
I have all the Secret Six work, the Rose & the Thorn miniseries, the Superman run (And I agree with Roger Stern, those stories are very underrated), and, naturally, Birds of Prey.
I only have the first issue of Welcome to Tranquility but I adored it, so I'm looking forward to the rest.
I plan to get Atom in trade. In fact, I plan to get most stuff in trade but BoP has so much monthly goodness that I can't make the swap.

As of this moment, currently nothing. :( Since I have been covering more independent books lately due to my indy column I've made a more conscious effort to avoid a lot of books done by the big two. Which means that unless it's already something I've always collected or features a character I'm collecting, I'm just not touching it. Sorry Gail.
Now that may be changing as I've heard quite a few good things about a couple of your books. I just dropped three books, so I can probably get one. So I'm checking out The Atom and Welcome to Tranquility. I liked your stuff with Villains United. It's just been a case of timing with your books.

Currently I'm buying:
Welcome to Tranquility, which is rapidly turning into my favourite book from you ever, which is really hard considering that I adored both Villains United and Secret Six, and I've been reading Birds of Prey since issue one.
Birds of Prey, which was my first exposure to your writing, I'm also buying.
I checked out both Gen-13 and Atom, but neither really caught me, so I'm not buying them.
I would definitely buy more Black Alice, and Secret Six. For that matter, you are one of the few comic creators where your name on a project will get me to try it out for just that reason (The others being Bill Willingham, Colleen Doran, Linda Medley, and Aaron Williams)

I pretty much enjoy all the books Gail writes, though I'll admit I'm something of a newcomer to her work. For several years I was constantly badgered into trying BoP by the guys who run my regular comics haunt, but I kept resisting. I used to buy BoP when it first started but gave up when Guice started drawing it, and I was reluctant to go back.
Then, one day, I discovered this board and figured it would only be right to sample at least some of Gail's output. I thoroughly enjoyed the first BoP collection ("Of like Minds"? -- sorry, my memory is not what it was), and quickly ordered the others along with the Villains United collection. Subsequently I added BoP to my pull list and followed that with regular orders for The Atom, Gen 13, and Tranquility.
Preferences, in reverse order:
Atom
Welcome to Tranquility
Gen 13
BoP
The characters in a typical Gail Simone book tend to be so well-rounded and believable that it's a real pleasure to get caught up in their adventures. Gail may gush like a fan girl over the likes of Marty Pasko and Roger Stern (and, hey, who wouldn't?), but I have no doubt that the next generation of writers will find much inspiration in her sparkling dialogue.

I'm currently buying, reading and enjoying Birds of Prey and Gen 13. :)
In the past, I've bought and/or read (favorite to least favorite) your Rose & Thorn, Villains United, Secret Six, Action Comics, Helmet of Fate: Black Alice, The All-New Atom, Welcome to Tranquility and Teen Titans. The first five, I read and enjoyed all the issues you wrote. Atom, I read for a little while (6-7 issues) but lost interest. Tranquility, I only picked up the first issue. (I honestly couldn't remember if I enjoyed it or not, thus I never picked up further issues.) And with Teen Titans, I didn't get by the art to read it. :o

Well, they clearly give you nifty uniforms/avatars down there, so at least you've got that much. =)

I've read some of your stuff and would like to read more but budget concerns stop me from buying all the comics I would like too.
I'm currently buy and reading BoP. It's my favorite current book that you write. I've been getting Gen 13 also but it's second on the list. If I can get all the issues of it I'll buy Tranquility at a Boston comic show that I believe is next week.
My all time favorite book that you have done is Rose and Thorn. The story was cool and I really enjoy Adrianna Melo's art.
I at least skim through whatever you have on the racks for current titles.

I've bought everything from the last two years or so.
I've enjoyed VU/Secret Six the best, I think. Also have really loved BoP, Atom, and Welcome to Tranquility.
Liked Action. Liking Gen13, and expect to like it just as much as the above books as I get used to the characters.
Wasn't particularly into JLA Classified or the Teen Titans story.

From the books you put out at the moment:
Birds of Prey, because it brought me back to comics, therefore my favourite.
Tranquility
Gen13
Atom
Villians United/Secret Six are by far may favourite mini, although Rose & Thorn was simply wonderful. However, I didn't buy any of your Action Comics, mostly because I'm not a big Superman fan. JLA was alright, and I didn't mind your stint on Teen Titans either. Helmet of Fate: Black Alice was a great little story, best one-shot.
So yeah, I do read your stuff because you're a consistently creative and intelligent writer. :D

I _did_ read Birds of Prey and Gen13, but have dropped both.
I'm going to either start trying out Welcome to Tranquility or maybe... maybe... wait to see if a trade comes out.
Lots of good buzz on Atom, but my sad ass is still holding out for Ray Palmer (yes, I know it is a lame reason to not pick up the series, but dammit its my 2.99 lol). Maybe we'll see what I'll do after the search for Ray Palmer concludes and even if he is still alive.

I pick up Birds of Prey and Atom. Love them both. I'd rather have Ray Palmer in the driver's seat, but I understand having to deal with editorial mandate. I have every issue of Birds of Prey though I was going to drop the title many years ago until I read Gail's first issue on the series and have stuck with it ever since.
I would read Gen 13, but that series lost me long before you got it.
I pick up VU/Secret Six when I can find it. I haven't got all the issues aside from the IC crossover.
btw.. Gail, ever thought about taking a crack at Supergirl? That is a book without a direction and all it ever seems to do is mindlessly tie into other things. I imagine you could probably right that ship and maybe even bring a much improved character into the BoP corner of the DCU. Seems like there has been a lot of creative shifts on that book.

Gen 13 (This book is freakin' genius. I love the characters, and the dialog is so funny and sick . . . and funny.)

I am reading BoP, Welcome to Tranquility, the Secret Six projects, and read and enjoyed Deadpool/Agent X, Killer Princesses, Action, and the Black Alice one-shot. In fact, I think I have at least tried everything Gail has written.
As much as I would like to say that I read everything Gail writes, I don't. However, she is on a short list of writers whose name on a project guarantees at least a try-out by me. Even Gen13, a property that never held any interest to me, got a try-out.
However, for some reason, Gen13 and the Atom haven't held my interest. I chalk it up to simply a mismatch in book and reader in addition to my having to cull my pull list for lack of time and funds.

I think I have some sort of secret control over Gail's career.
Remember the thread where we were hitting out ideas for what Gail could write next, and half the people were saying Wonder Woman? Well I said that I wouldn't mind seeing Gail take a shot at Gen13, but what I would really like her to do is something creater owned and original.
Well low and behold, Gail's on Gen13 and has gifted us with Welcome to Tranquility!

currently, i'm not really reading any of your books, but whenever I see one you write, I pick it up and see. these are some of my faves and what I remember of them. Gail is brilliant most of the time, not all of the time. ;)
Deadpool - (Marvel): Only a few other books will even come close to how wonderful & fun Gail's run on this was.
Villains United - (DC): Will be remembered as one of the best series about the 'bad' guys.
Villains United Infinite Crisis Special - (DC): see above
Action Comics - (DC): Really enjoyed her run on this.
Secret Six - (DC): awesome, awesome awesome!
Birds of Prey - (DC): Gail got me reinterested in this book with her writing.
Rose and Thorn - (DC): Admittedly, I did not like them first time around, I put them away for a while, then read them at a later time, and discovered how good they were.
Killer Princesses - (Oni): Nicely written and drawn.
Super Hero Happy Hour #4 - (Geekpunk): :) This was a cool little story.
Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer Spider-Man - (Marvel): This was a fun, good lighthearted tale.
Agent X - (Marvel): Good book, but then taking her off, then on for like that last issue was...confusing. Gail = 1; Publishing = 0
Heroes - (Marvel)
Teen Titans - (DC): Good job by Gail, that is all.
Noble Causes: Extended Family - (Image): Honestly, I don't really remember this book, but if a faint memory serves correctly...I wasn't too interested in this comic but Gail did a good job on this.
Gen 13 - (Wildstorm): I only have issue 1. I may have to get this in trade. I'm still too attached to the previous book I knew.
Tranquility - (DC): I admit, I don't know how this series is coming along, as I only picked up the latest issue this past week.
I don't know what it is, but I think reading her work, there are these moments in her comics when things are not all 'comicky' and all that you can tell that she's really getting into the character and puts real life kinda dialogue into someone's words. it just rings true. when I find those moments, like in her recent Black Alice book (oh yeah forgot to add that too), when ba is interacting with her parents, it's those moments that make a gail comic for me.

At this moment, I'm down to just BOP, sorry to say....
However, despite Dinah's exit, it is still one of my top 5 favorite monthlies....Barda....

The decisive factor in me trying outa new book is the writer rather than the artist, character or heaven forbid, company.
And you have joined the ranks of Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker and such as a writer whose books I will try and almost always add to my pull list regardles of what they're about.
My favourites are Welcome To Tranquility, Birds Of Prey and Killer Princesses (that book really didn't go where I thought it was going...).
Didn't much care for Action Comics though.

Oooh, yeah...I've been reading your stuff since you jumped onto the BOP wagon and have also enjoyed side trips with Villains United, Secret Six, Rose and Thorn, Atom, Action and The Legion.
I missed the first few issues of Tranquility, so will wait for the TPB. I guess I'm one of the few who do note have pull lists at my local shop, preferring the thrill of the hunt for new mags. This policy of mine can play havoc with continuity, though.
I also want to tell you how much I enjoyed the Black Alice/Helmet of Fate one-shot.
I'm beginning to understand your Black Alice dynamic....she's wacky, she's got problems, she's conflicted, and sympathetic and just when you're starting to think you really like her and understand her - she scares the hell out of you, (I loved the last line in the book).
I'm sorry to say that Gen13 didn't do much for me.
How about doing some Justice Leage or Justice Society stuff? I loved your JLAU one-shot.

I read Birds of Prey and All-New Atom.
I did read Villains United (although I missed out on Secret Six).
I don't read Gen 13 because I do not like the art. I haven't followed Welcome to Tranquility.
I think I've begun to lose interest in Birds... Without Canary, it feels like something is really missing.
Atom... It's a fine book although it feels like a very 2nd-string title and with some of these bigger stories out now, I feel like it is being overshadowed and I may forget about it (I'm also not wild about the random captions quoting either real figures or a random DCU character).

Currently I'm reading Gen13, and plan to pick up Welcome To Tranquility in trade.
However, that is not to say I don't enjoy Birds of Prey. I'm just weird. I tend to flip flop on Marvel and DC. I'll go awhile just reading DC....then I'll stop reading DC for awhile and just catch up on Marvel. It's fun reading several trades worth of a favorite series for the first time all in one go. Or maybe thats just me. Anyways. At the moment I'm on a Marvel kick, but I greatly enjoyed your Villains United mini and what I've read of Birds of Prey....and when I get back on a DC kick, Birds is definitely one of the titles I'll be catching up on in trades, and I'll most likely be picking up Secret Six as well.
But honestly, I just stumbled across this forum one day when wondering what the hell the Rick Olney thread everyone was talking about, and ended up staying cos of the people. Y'all are on a special kind of crack, and that just appeals to me and my own warped nature. :D
And one day, I shall find where this whole pirates vs ninjas she-bang started, and offer my own unnecessary two cents, because randomness is just that fun.

Prior to reading YABS, I really had only a vague knowledge of who you even were, Gail. I hope I'm not being insulting but I assume you want truthful answers here. I really, REALLY, liked your Deapool stuff, but that's the only place I knew your name from. I think I began to notice it a few years ago, but I didn't go out of my way to try and buy your books. To be fair, though, there are only about three or four writers that make me want to compile entire runs of their work.
It's not your style that has kept me from becoming a rabid fan, (And I am a fan, I'm just not rabid.) It's more a case of the books you've been assigned to just don't fall into my usual buy pile. I know you're a great writer, because I loved Deadpool, and Double Date is without question the best episode of the entire JLU animated series run. (Without Question. Geez I crack myself up. :) ) I guess if I wasn't spending all my money on all that stuff by Johns and Bendis I'd have enough left over to branch out a little. BTW-I think I just realized that I don't really buy the Johns and Bendis stuff because it's particularly good, I buy it because I'm addicted to knowing what's going on in mainstream comics, and those guys are so damn prolific that it's a necessity to buy their books just to know what's going in each respective universe. It's kind of odd now that I think about it, because the circumstances that caused me to avoid some of your books never had anything to do with the writing. It either wasn't one of my usual books, or as with Teen Titans, I just couldn't bear to look at the artwork.
You know what? Since you come across as such a nice person here on YABS, I am going to start going out of my way to find your work. I've already given up on 52, dropped ASM, and was dissapointed by Civil War, so I think I feel that old zeitgeist that I felt during the late eighties starting to fire me up to seek out more interesting work.

1. Birds of Prey - really enjoying the book since 100, I've come on and off it from time to time. I love Big Barda, always have, and I'm very glad to see her in action.
2. Welcome to Tranquility - very unique idea and a great book.

Loved VU / SS.
Like BoP (but I'm worried about Dinah / Ollie relationship rumored to be otw)
Committed to give Atom a fair shake :)
I also really wanted the HoF: Black Alice last time I was in the store, but had already busted out over $70 in books for the month.
I loved what you did with her in BoP.

For the moment, I'm not reading any US comics but up until a few months ago I was really into BOP, Atom, Secret Six and I picked up the first issue of Gen 13 which I also enjoyed.
My favourite Gail Simone title ever was Rose & Thorn which was six issues of sheer brilliance.
Killer Princesses was a really good read also.
I actually started reading comics again back in 2003 because Gail had just started writing Birds Of Prey and I had just finished seeing the TV show over here in Scotland.
BOP was actually the only title I read at one point and eventually I started reading another title and then another and so on until I was completely hooked.
I only stopped reading because I was suffering from depression and anxiety attacks which were making it difficult for me to go to Glasgow to buy comics.
I really hope I can start reading comics again regularly in the next few months.

I have to agree. Given this poster's history, I'm pretty sure he's not joking.
I keep hoping that all his posts are some sort of dumb joke that nobody gets, because I have a hard time somebody could really be that unapologetically bigoted.

Started with the Villains United tpb because all I kept hearing was how good it was (and it was)
From there went on to Secret Six (and loved it)
From there went on to the All-New Atom (which holds the place as the first comic I read when it comes out. This past week I didn't even make it home -- got stuck in a line in my bank's drive-through teller and skimmed thorugh the story sitting there in my car).
Last week I checked Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds tpb out from my local library. I really enjoyed it but it is unfortunately the only Simone written BoP stuff in the entire library system and I am so far behind on "Trades I want to buy when I have the money" it isn't even funny. So when Wizard World Chicago rolls around this year BoP trades at a discount are at the top of my shopping list.

So, just curious...
Are you reading any of my comics, and if so, which ones...and if you don't mind, could you put them in order from least favorite to most, if you get more than one?
Here's a list of current books of yours I'm reading and doesn't include all that past stuff (and I put them in that odd "least down to most" ordering scheme):
Birds of Prey
All New Atom
Gen13

Welcome To Tranquility
Birds of Prey (issues and trades - double dipper)
also read VU/S6 when it comes out. i guess i'm one of those fanpeople you hear about. while i'm typing, gail, you should do more podcast interviews!

I'm not currently reading any of your books. Nothing personal, I assure you. I'm not particularly fond of the general direction of the DCU right now, so it takes a lot to get me to buy a DCU book at the moment. WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY sounds interesting, but I haven't gotten around to checking it out, and I've never been interested in GEN 13.
I did read SECRET SIX, though, and if it had been an ongoing, I might have kept buying it.

That's nice of you to say. It's hard to explain, but when I listen to these audio and video interviews, I just start to feel like it's incredibly obnoxious. Not the interview, ME. I just don't dig hearing myself prattle on about myself and my work.

Hi Gail, I have been a fan since I first read your YABS columns on CBR. I have read and enjoyed Agent X, Birds of Prey and Killer Princesses. I currently read-
Gen 13: I gave this a chance mostly because Gail is the writer, I keep reading because I am intrigued by the idea of custom made novelty super humans.
Welcome to Tranquility- This is my favorite book Gail has written, I'm interested in the little touches on how history and society would be diffrent if there were super-heroes and although I usually don't the idea of "real" super-heroes having their own comics and cartoon shows I am quite entertained by their use in this book. Also its just a really cool book book with an engrossing mystery and some great characters.

Gail, that's not hard to understand at all. It has to do with you being a nice, modest person as opposed to a blowhard ORCA whale (aka waste of hot air). But rest assured, we like hearing this stuff. Especially for those of us (just speaking for myself) who are trying to make it as writers ourselves, its awesome getting insight into the writing process of writers we admire like you.
And speaking strictly as a fan, nothing gets me more excited about reading a writer's work than actually HEARING how excited they get just talking about it themselves.

I think I have to rank Birds of Prey as my favorite title by you. Its got everything, and has never disappointed (and I have your complete run, thus far). How many other books can say that? Not a stinker in the bunch!
The All-New Atom is a close second, as this book always makes me laugh out loud. I love this new character (which should take nothing away from my appreciation of Ray Palmer, though I haven't read anything since the first Sword of the Atom mini that made him the least bit interesting to me), and I love the unpredictable directions this book takes.
Villains United and Secret Six were hardcore and excellent! I would buy a Six ongoing in a New York minute.
I would love to get my hands on the Rose and Thorn mini (has this been done up as a TPB?), and while I don't get any Wildstorm stuff, everything I hear about Welcome to Tranquility makes me want to buy it (which I probably will someday soon).

And anything else you might have in the pipeline. ;) Mostly, I follow the Bat-clan and peripherals (which is why I started reading BoP wayyyyy back before you started writing it. :p ) But there are now four writers whom my LCS has orders to pull for me no matter what. I think the phrase I used was "I don't care if it's a collection of Hostess Fruit Pie ads. Save it."
You're one.
The others are (Christos Gage, who sold me on an LOTDK arc that really stood out; Russell Lissau, who seems to see Batman pretty much the way I do; and Tamora Pierce. I have virtually every YA novel she's written. Now that she's into comics... I'm lining up for them.)

Its so odd to read that DC52 hear the Ralph love.

Good luck with those. The Deadpools and Agent X's are hard to find and when you do find them, they're going to be expensive. Both books seem to have attained a Holy Grail status with Simone fans.
At least the BoPs are in trade.
3) Tranquility. I bet I can get caught up on that.
4) Secret Six? Probably when it comes out in trade.
Tranquility doesn't seem to be in the smaller shops. Talked to a shop owner a month or so back who hadn't been ordering it. But changed his mind after hearing the basic description. Wildstorm didn't exactly go out of their way to call attention to it.
Um, anyway, I think I've managed to read and collect all but a couple of issues. I'm still missing a couple of the Bongos mostly Bart Simpsons and a a few of the Marvel singles. I finally managed to get a copy of Sexy Chix which I plan on reading this week since I can't do much else.
Gail costs me a lot of money every month.

I've been reading Birds of Prey since issue #98 or #99. I've liked your work on that book so much that I've gone back and picked up the old trades beginning with Of Like Minds. I think the only Simone BoP TPB that I don't have is the most recent one. Maybe this week.
I picked up the Villains United mini. I liked it ok, but I think I would have liked it better had I known more of the characters (I've only been reading comics for a few years).
I read your run on Action Comics too and you even autographed one of them for me at C.A.P.E. last year. :D
EDIT: Oops... forgot to add Killer Princesses. Good stuff.

The RO thread has prevented me from reading any comics :) But I'm rather annoyed about the Steve Rogers thing.
I'm picking up all your new titles except for the Black Alice one shot which I thought was written by someone else. (excepting Byrne issues)
BoP has dropped with Dinah dropping out. I'll continue with it but it's just not the same comic. At least you didn't kill Steve Rogers.
Not that I'm letting the DC killers off the hook either.
Can't rank your titles as they all have their charms. While there are similarities they each have a distinctive voice which is appealing.
So don't kill Steve Rogers!

Current:
I read BoP; I think it's not bad but also not great; actually I dropped it several times already but picked it up again because I'm interested in the characters (especially Rose/Thorn);
I will probably get Tranquility in trade; initially, the concept didn't sound interesting to me, but since I heard now it resembles Top Ten, I'll probably give it a try;
I tried the last issue of Atom, but wasn't impressed, sorry.
Past:
I love the Rose and Thorn mini!
I read Killer Princesses, and it's quite good.
Villains United and Secret Six both were also good.

Strange as it seems, i really have no idea what most of you are reading that I write, if you're reading anything of mine at all!
Let me help you out there.
Last thing I read was "Buddha 1" by Osama Tezuka. An a-MA-zing story with glorious art, top notch production and a classy design.
Next things on my to-read/buy-list are Templesmith's WormWood TPB, and some more old Metabaron-stuff by Jodorowsky and Jimenez... but I have NO idea when I'm gonna come 'round to actually buying those.
I've got a pretty busy dayjob and two little kids, and plenty of bills to pay off, so comics aren't that high on my list as they once were. And IF I get the chance to visit the local comic book store, I usually buy European comics, or trades, so I can plop my ass in the coach, and read for an hour straight, and put 'em back on my bookshelf when I'm done without the hassle of rearranging a bunch of single issues per title or wrinkling them or whatever.
And no, sorry Gail. I know of your work, and know some people who love your stuff... but I don't think I ever read any of your books. Sorry.
(Actually, I came for the Olney, stayed for the food! :D )

Hey Gail,
I think you already know how much I love your work and all that. I will generally pick up anything that you write atleast to try it out because I am an unforgiving fanboy of yours.
As for my list, I'm only including recent stuff, but I just want to add that I loved Deadpool and Agent X so much. The run on Action and Teen Titans were okay, I would have liked them better if the art didn't ruin it for me. And Secret Six/Villains United are still two of the best minis I've ever read.
1. Birds of Prey - One of the stalwart books that I love and look forward to every month. It may not get huge attention like some other books, but I feel that this book doesn't receive more attention for its consistent quality on writing as well as the art. I know people are pissed about Canary leaving and so was I, but there's this new energy of anything can happen that is just so fun, I can't wait to see where it goes next. P.S. Barda rules.
2. Welcome to Tranquility - I love this book. It's so fresh and hilarious and everyone is just so full of personality. The cast is huge and everyone is so unique and has their own voice. I love it. And Emoticon is freaking brilliant. SHOW ME THE FACE.
3. Gen13 - I'm still picking this up. I'm not in love with this as much as number 1 and 2 on the list, but I do think that it's solid. I'm looking forward to the first arc getting out of the way so we can get right into the fun without the set-up. I think i'll enjoy it more once we get the introductions out of the way. It's a very promising start though.
4. The All-New Atom - I've actually stopped reading this, sorry to say. I can appreciate that you're going for the whacky out-of-this world stuff, but it was too high concept for my piddly little brain to process.

Okay okay. I'll come clean. I just read my first Gail Simone comic today. (Although I have read a few things here and there that she's written about comics and such, and enjoyed them a great deal.) I am 3/4 through with BOP: Sensei & Student. (I'm on the reference desk tonight, bear with me.)
I totally want to be Oracle when I grow up. (Except the "getting shot in the back by the Joker" part. I'll be skipping that in Superhero school.)
