Funny that cos I hate British history classes. Technically there were no slaves in Britain...except that there was. But Britain owned a fair amount of the Caribbean and slave treatment there was among the worst in the world.

Yup. There was slavery almost everywhere in the world where it was economically viable in some form or another until the 19th Century when abolitionist movements started taking off. Only about 5% of the slaves taken from sub-Saharan Africa by Europeans were transported to the British colonies that became the U.S. Millions more were taken by Arab and Berber slave traders across the Sahara to North African and Middle Eastern nations.

To their credit, the first nation in the West to formally abolish slavery was Denmark in (I think) 1793.

This is really, really awesome rogue. If we in the States can get a hold of this please don't hesitate to tell us. This is one subject I'm very interested in.

Ian posted an interesting article not long ago, let's see if I can find it...

Ah, here it is!

Basically, there's a lot more African genetic history in the United Kingdom than most people realize.

Most definetly especially when you consider that the first Africans in the UK arrived as Roman soldiers. Thats a hell of a lot more Black British history than most people realise exist

Where I live in Bristol is littered with history of the slave trade here. There's a pub in Clifton called the Black Boy Inn where slaves used to be traded, there's buildings in the city centre that still show their slave trade roots. St. Pauls and Easton are living evidence of the slave trade and it's effects upon a city.

Slavery was a huge part of the British economy at the time and helped fund an empire, but it's barely taught in schools.

Annoyingly, lots of things are barely taught in schools or at least taught after most students have stopped doing history. It was only in A-Level that I was taught anything about the history of Britain and Ireland - the country right right next to us who exchange tourists with us, who we have a shared history with due to conquest and colonialisation, and who have a Northern part in the UK that has been a significant political hot potato for decades. Students have to wait until A-Level to learn that?

I dunno who sets the curriculum, but they suck.

It was the sort of programme Channel 4 used to make on a regular basis before it became the Big Brother channel. Very well done on making it and dealing with some harsh discoveries.

That's quite impressive for a documentary on that timeslot on Channel 4. They generally only get those figures or bigger for something like Time Team or the horror of Big Brother.

Ah ha! Pirating your own stuff, eh?

Kidding aside, it's pretty simple. Open it in something like Pinnacle (maybe Windows media player'll do it too) and 'save as...'.

It'll be a little large, just a warning.
