View Full Version : How Will They React?

The Anti-Existence

This is a thread dedicated specifically to how characters (namely heroes) will react to hearing of the death of Captain America. If they are currently not active, just think of them returning and hearing the news.

What do you think the following characters will think, say or do upon hearing the news?

1. The Hulk
2. Thor
3. Spiderman
4. Wonder Man

And you are free to add your own choices.

Dusty.

1. The Hulk - He won't do more than shrug his shoulders about it.
2. Thor - There isn't a mortal who he respected more. He's going to be crushed, providing the new Thor is the same as the old with all the memories.
3. Spiderman - Sick to his stomach over it.
4. Wonder Man - see above

I would say that Tony is going to feel the worst. Wolverine's going to become more cynical without Cap there to balance things out. The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, the X-Men, etc... All of them are going to be sick over this.

I'm curious to see how the Marvel villians deal with this. What does Dr. Doom think? How about Zemo?

I wouldn't call the current Zemo a Villian, more an Anti-Hero.

But anyway isn't he lost in time or something.

Hulk - Probably not going to care either way. Might make some comment as to him being slightly more tolerable than most of the other heroes.

Thor - Definitely going to shed a tear or two. He'll probably highly upset that Cap didn't get to die the "warrior's death" that he deserved. He'll also probably build a monument to him in Asgard...or pulverize a mountain on Earth into a giant Cap statue.

Spider-Man - On top of everything else, he'll feel guilty about it too. And wonder if Tony wasn't right when he said Peter had screwed things up for both sides. On some level, he'll blame himself.

Wonder Man - Won't be blaming himself, but may question how much of a role the Pro-Reg side played in all this. Will be generally depressed and mopey for a while, like most Marvel heroes that knew him.

I'll add:

Namor - His opinion of the surface world just dropped about another 10 notches. They just killed off one of about 5 or 6 surface dwellers that he has any respect for (and certainly the one he had the most respect for). Will probably declare a day (or week) of mourning in Atlantis.

Dr. Doom - Might raise a glass to a "worthy opponent" but only while gloating about how he won't be around to get in his way anymore.

Zemo - Will definitely raise a glass or three when he gets back to present day. Might even try to resurrect him if he's still got his "godlike" abilities.

I can imagine a lot of lesser villains actually mourning him in their own way ("He mighta been a self-righteous pain in the butt, but he was a class act...did I ever tell ya about when he took me down after I robbed the first Bank of Manhattan?"). I'll be particularly happy if we get to see Batroc the Leaper eulogize him in his own way. :D

If only Marvel were going to publish a series of one-shots detailing the reactions of various heroes. Oh wait, they are!

The only thing I'm certain of is that Namor is SO going to go nuclear.

Yes, but fortunately none of the people in this thread are scheduled to be the focus of those one-shots.

Which is my concern about the whole thing, really. That we'll never really see the -whole- Marvel U's reaction as opposed to the select few they choose to highlight. But hopefully the one-shots will give us a lot more than just the "spotlight" characters.

We kind of saw a taste of Tonys reaction.

In Mighty Avengers, he's now calling him "Rogers" instead of "Cap" or "Steve."

Yup, his deep profound friendship and respect is just oozing out... it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I think that will depend, some lesser villains will be sad (Batroc), others won't care one way or another (I doubt Electro will be sad, but i doubt he will happy either) and others, the really evil ones, will be happy (Mr. Hyde has fought Cap quite a few times and considering he how evil he is, he will be glad about this.)

Yeah i kinda feel like all the alien races will put reed richards on trial again. This time for not killing Tony and doing everyone a favor.

Actually, that's not too surprising for Tony, and perfectly in-character.

He's always had a tendency to try to keep the things that -really- bother him at arm's length, metaphorically speaking. Trying to "depersonalize" Steve may very well be a coping mechanism for him.

EDIT: Post #3,000. Whee!

I don't disagree for a second that it it isn't perfectly in character. Nonetheless, it's cold.

Though I suppose it's better than using Caps death as a way to sucker people into turning themselves in like Carol.

I REALLY need those Fallen Son books out now, cause so far I'm just not feeling the Cap love, at least from the PRO's.

Exactly correct to have him talk like that IMHO - shows how people get entrenched after a conflict even when they profoundly respect the other.

Hulk - I think this might turn out to be more serious than anyone thinks. Hulk will look at it as "Iron Man sent me to space, and got Captain America killed." Yet another reason to lay waste to SHIELD.

Thor - All depends on the memories. If he remembers Cap, then someone out there is going to pay...big time.

Spider-Man - In the wake of Captain America being 'dead', someone has to step up and take the mantle of what is 'right' and 'good' in the Marvel Universe. Who else is more honourable a hero than Pete?

Doom / Red Skull / etc - They are going to feel robbed. Unless of course, they are behind it in the first place...but they would want to make him suffer. ..

My theory is that Fury is behind the whole 'death' of Cap. So, I would like to see how Bucky and Fury 'react' to what is going on. I'm also positive that Falcon is going to less than pleased. USAgent might be called in to 'rise to the occasion'.

Wolverine saw Cap as the great soldier, and who kept the peace. I can't wait to see his reaction.

The way Thor took it upon himself to judge and execute the Presence after he turned Cap into a glowy zombie was one of my favorite moments in Busiek's Avengers run.

On that note, I wonder how many other Avengers might decide killing is more often justified without Cap around to remind them otherwise?

I don't know. The situation they put Cap in, any mourning is going to be conflicted. The antis, he dragged them into a conflict and then bailed out on them and left them in a far worse situation than before, the pros, well, if you've got yourself into a mentality of "blame Cap for everything", grief is going to be really muted.

Which is why I hate hate hate that they handed him over to Millar to write so out of character.

So are the events in Mighty Avengers #1 supposed to have taken place after Cap was shot? If so, then Wasp has seriously gone down in my estimation. She's worried about the monsters trashing her favourite shops when one of her best friends & oldest colleagues has just been murdered.

Nice.
