View Full Version : Would you buy the concept of a Batman Beyond comic?

I was just thinking the other day about this, would you buy a comic that had the concept, and perhaps a couple of the characters, from Batman Beyond?
Not an animated series style book, but one a little bit more in the vein of the current DCU (minus the misogyny and rape), with Terry McGuiness or another young guy in the suit, and Bruce Wayne retired, and the entire thing set in the future?

DC said something about Batman Beyond making an appearance this year, but it wasn't clear whether it would be in the comics or video or another medium.
I personally think there would have to be some serious changes to make Batman Beyond work in the comics DCU, because a lot of what made it successful was its edginess as a kids' show. In comics, a lot of what BB fought the censors to get away with is not only allowed but has become cliche. Also, I'm not sure Terry would mix well with a bigger universe (although, of course, he'd be in the future and wouldn't necessarily have to). Then you get into the sticky situation about which universe the story took place in, and potentially taking the drama out of the Batman stories that take place in the present.
That said, I adored Terry and Max and old Bruce from BB and I'd be thrilled to see more of them, in comics or otherwise. I just don't know it it'd be possible to pull it off.

I wouldn't worry about the continuity, and certainly wouldn't put it into the DCU. Make it an Elseworlds series and have a bit of fun with it being a *potential* future for the current Batman. Hell, put it on Earth-B or something, doesn't matter, just let the creative team run wild with the concept, and the opportunity to have a retired (and happy?) Bruce Wayne in the mentor role.

Elseworlds could pull it off. Putting it in cont. would really cement the future of Batman, and I think it's better left in the air.
But yeah, I'd buy if the writing was good. I wouldn't buy just because it's Batman Beyond.
Yes. Let it be a title similar to Spider-Girl over at Marvel - a "possible" future of the Batman mythos.

I probably wouldn't. I think Terry's origin was weak and a slap in the face to Bruce's years of training. If that was changed then I might check it out.

Well, that could be easily changed. Like md62 said, something along the lines of Spider-Girl.

If that was changed then I might check it out.To be fair, Batman Beyond never suggested that Terry was as good a crimefighter as Bruce was. His inexperience caused him to get the crap kicked out of him more than it ever happened to Bruce. He just had the superpowered armour and Bruce's guidance to bail him out, is all.
Anyway, Batman Beyond is one of those rare examples of "horrible idea, brilliant execution." I never had any desire to see Batman: The Next Generation, but I'll be damned if it didn't turn out to be my favourite superhero cartoon of all-time. I'd be willing to read an ongoing comic done in a straight superhero style.

I would only buy it if they included the misogyny and rape.

I think if Batman Beyond can be done in a Elseworlds, like mentioned above,or a possible future tale..then i would buy it.There would have to be a good writer to bring me in,because i can imagine the whole concept could fall appear if this project would be given to just anyone.

If they would do a couple changes, namely dropping Terry's current origins story, and do something about The Jokerz, I would definitely put it onto my pull list. The one thing they would have to keep is how The Joker screwed over Tim Drake, they might have to change the particulars of the event.

I would buy it if there weren't very many story changes from the cartoon. I'd really like it to be in the same art style as the cartoon, though.
