Eh, normal size week this time, with a few highly anticipated books.

DC:
52, Week 44: After last weeks shocker, this should be a good one. Countdown to WW3 begins.
Justic League of America #6: The team almost forms. You know it would be much easier to type if they changed the name back to JLA.
Shazam, Monster Society of Evil #2 of 4: Now that the origin and set up is out of the way, Smith can get to drawing the Monsters. This is the first book I read this week.

Marvel:
Civil War: Initiative: Is this the Silvestri drawn one? I know I'm picking it up, I just can't remember the solicits on it.
Criminal #5: Good news, first arc ends on the best ongoing from Marvel. Bad news, no new issue for a few months.
Ghost Rider, Trail of Tears #2 of 6: To kind of quote Jeff Goldblum, "You are going to have Ghost Rider in your Ghost Rider comic?" Beautiful art though, which is really the big draw for me on this.
Iron Man:Hypervelocity #3 of 6: The second issue really helped this series, plus I think I saw somewhere that there's a Livewires appearence somewhere in the mini, which will be awesome if true.
Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness #1: Enjoyed the first one enough to pick this up, but may drop the rest in favor of the trade. I'll see how I feel about this.
Mighty Avengers #1: As much as I enjoy Bendis, and Cho, and the Avengers, my anticipation is kind of muted on this one. I know it should be good, I'm just not as familier with some of the characters in this one, so I'm not as drawn to it. Well see what it's like.
Ulitmate Spider-man #106: Tear, Bagleys last arc. Return of the Marvel Knights it looks like. Good as always.
Ultimate Vision #3 of 5: Mostly for the Peterson art, as the story isn't blowing me away. It looks good though.

Viper Comics:
Dead@17 #3: I'm done with this one. maybe if it came out on a regular baises, but it doesn't so I'm dropping it.

Possibles:
Inquest #144: Still $1.99, which is a good price for a Wizard mag. I may not even pick it up though, I don't know how much I read in it.
Fantastic Four #543: Maybe for the possible Gravity story, but I wasn't killed by Pelletier's art when he was on She-Hulk. maybe it's better here. Maybe I'll wait to see how it is and I'll pick up the trade.

Change of plans. After getting a bulletin from Dwayne McDuffie on ComicSpace saying that the FF 543 is 64 pages for 3.99 with art by Mike McKone and a 12 page backup by Paul Pope, it will definetly be picked up tomorrow.

For the first time in MONTHS, the list of things I'm getting is longer than the Waiting list.

Detective Comics #829--I;m not sure if I 've read anything by Stuart Moore, so I figured, why not?
Ex Machina vol. 5: Smoke Smoke TP--Shoot! I still need to read vol. 4!
SHAZAM: The Monster Society of Evil #2--I know I should Wait for the HC/TP on this, but I've never been this excited for a Capt. Marvel book.
Supergirl vol. 2: Candor TP--Joe Kelly! Woot!

Dynamo 5 #1--Looks interesting

Captain America #25--Does this take place after CW #7?
Criminal #5--I should copy & paste Goman's posting here
Fantastic Four #543--I repeat my CA #25 question from above
Mighty Avengers #1--Just the first issue for the fun of it. I'll wait for trade after that.
Ultimate Spider-Man #106--Personally, I liked the Clone Saga. Even if MJ did look like a rat creature from Bone. :o

Boneyard #24--Woot! :D I can not understand how some of you guys can wait 1 yr+ for the trades. I just don't have that kind of willpower.

EC Archives Two-Fisted Tales vol. 1 HC--The price has kept me from ordering all of them, but I managed to squeeze this one in.

Strangers In Paradise #88--So help me, if this issue makes me cry too...

Wait for Trade
--------------
Jonah Hex
Justice League of America
Loveless--Hate waiting for this one
Bullet Points--Reviews have me convinced I judged to hastily
Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born--I've never read the novels, so I don't mind waiting for the HC
Fantastic Four: The End--Alan Davis!
Iron Man: Hypervelocity--Adam Warren!
Uncanny X-Men--Brubaker!

See, this is why I'm glad I spoiled it for myself first thing in the morning. I'm reading Cap in trades, so I knew I wouldn't be reading this issue for a few months(looks like according to Amazon, the trade with 22-24 wont be out til July), so I just read all the news stories. Good thing you didn't go to Yahoo! news earlier this morning. I feel bad for the people who didn't want to be spoiled though, and felt the same outrage when CW #2 came out. Hmm, maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy it though. But that's exactly what Marvel wants me to do.

Sure, go buy it. If you haven't read 22-24, a bit may be lost on you though. I've been buying Cap since Heroes Return. And I was mere minutes from being able to enjoy this story on it's own when a headline on a home page ruined it for me. The most important Cap story in decades, and it's f'n ruined.

I don't go to "normal" news sites like Yahoo, CNN, or even Boston.com. I'm extremely pissed that of all things COMIC News sites would ruin a story for their core audience. I mean, people on CNN.com are more than likely not entirely made up of comic book readers, but if you go to CBR you HAVE to assume that 75% + DO already read books.

And it's not like we all had a chance to read it yet. It was posted before 4pm, before anyone can get out of work - or some even school - and get to a shop.

What would the harm be in putting up a spolier-free HEADLINE at a MINIMUM? Or waiting a few hours for us to actually be able to get to a shop and READ the damn book?

I'm extremely pissed about this, and at a bunch of different people - not just one. I have a rant coming on (yeah - this doesn't count) and I'll blog it when I can sort it all out in my head.

FYI - I actually liked the story. I can't believe the actually DID it, and I don't see how it's a good thing, but it was a cool story.

- Jamie (who can't wait for Cap #26, unless people want to ruin that for me too)

I'm thinking the mystical healing properties of the Super Soldier Serum are about to come into play.

Either that, or a Wolverine blood transfusion.

We'll see how long this one lasts, but I certainly enjoyed it.

And, really, the high point of the story isn't the death, but rather the BIG revelation of who shot him, which was an otherwise murky panel that didn't seem to fit in too well.

As for spoilers: I liked NEWSARAMA trying to not spoil things on the front page by referring to "TDoCA." Yeah, like THAT wasn't too hard to figure out. . .

Yes, the "revelation" was a key aspect and one that added a TON to the story. One of the many reasons why I actually did LIKE the story. I still have questions though:

- We saw Sin, Flag Smasher, the Red Skull, and Dr. Faustas' involvment. What about what the Skull had been doing with the OTHER villians? Where do they come into play?

And I stayed away from N-rama once I saw the SPOILER WARNING on the home page. That was enough to have me wait 24 hours before going back.

See? Is that too much to ask for? Ugh.....

I ended up not getting a copy, only because my store was sold out already. I did flip through a copy that the owner hand on hold for himself, and it seemed like another decent issue, and on the plus side, I never saw the ending spoiled anywhere. The I got home and read Civil War: Initiative to which I can only say, "What the hell!!" I won't say what happens, but if you read it, you know what I'm talking about. Not a bad promo issue, got me pretty excited for Omega Flight, and maybe I'll pick up the Thunderbolts trade.

Criminal, 52, and Shazam were all excelent as well, all in different ways. Criminal was a good wrap up to the first arc. May can't come soon enough now. 52 continued to be weekly four color crack, and the crap is about to go down. And of course Shazam was awesome, although it felt a bit short and maybe not quite as good as the second one, although it had some funny over the top political humor, and of course, it was beautiful.

Copies of both the normal and variant issues are going for over $100 on ebay.

Yeah, I heard that Civil War: Initiative has some interesting things in it. I'll read that 1st thing on Monday when the DCBS box arrives.

Yeah, there was a kid at the store who was thinking of selling his. Everyone who was in the store agreed "If you're going to sell it, sell it now. It'll only go down in value." I guess it was a 50/50 split on the cover so it's not a rare variant, although smart eBayers may be able to squeeze a few bucks out of a non-reader by saying it's rare.

CIVIL WAR INITIATIVE ends with short previews of a number of upcoming Marvel titles -- including the two pages where THE BIG THING HAPPENS in CAPTAIN AMERICA. Whoops.

But that's OK because the event is discussed in dialogue inside the issue, as well as a possible outcome. . .

Man, I was looking at eBay now, and that's pretty amazing. The most shocking thing to me was pretty much all the auctions had action going on with them. Except for that one guy trying to sell 20 copies for $700, and the people charging ridiculous amounts for CGC graded copies. Me thinks they set thier sights too high.

Why the hell was this book $4.99? It was 24 pages of story PLUS previews of other books. This felt like a money grab by Marvel to me. I would have paid $3.99 for it, but it had something like 10 pages of Cap & Mighty Avengers previews in it - books I had just paid $3.99 apiece for on the same day! For the first time in a while I am not too happy with the Marketing department at Marvel.

If it makes you feel any better, I had it spoiled as well. I avoided all the comic news sites in the morning, but the Atlanta Journal Constitution spoiled it for me before heading to my LCS at lunchtime.

Jeff
Actually, DC is still a touch unpredictable with its trades, so I've been buying this monthly.

I'm liking the series alot. The Kandor story wasn't fantastic, but I chalked that up to one writer starting a story (Rucka) and then handing it off to another writer (Kelly) to finish. Rucka and Kelly typically write two very different types of stories, so while I love Joe Kelly, he would not have been who I would have thought of to finish a Greg Rucka story. It's like asking Terry Pratchett to finish a novel started by Dashiell Hammett.

Complicate matters with unsteady fill-in art*, and this trade may not win anyone over, but there was enough to keep me at least, and I am really liking what is going on right now.

EM

*I think the art got rushed to make up for the lost time that resulted from Rucka not being able to stay.

The Adventure of Barry Ween Boy Genius 1- for some reason, I had not gotten this yet. This collection is of the miniseries from Image. Though there are moments of fun in it, the writing is just not up to par in this book yet. Judd is still developing the characters and it shows in comparison to his later books. This was fun just to get a look at where the characters all began.

Poison Elves: Lost Tales #10 - the story is silly and quick. I get this book for the sole reason I just think Bordner's drawing works remarkably well with the storytelling.

Strangers in Paradise #88 - the countdown continues....I don't know what to say, it's sad to live out the last days of the characters and of the book itself. At least Terry is going out on his own terms.

The Punisher #45 - Things seem to fall waaay into place, nice and neat too often in this one. I would've thought after the last storyline, Frank would've been a little more careful in wiping out the mobsters instead of leaving so many alive, then charging in. Of note, is that freaky sexy ad on the back cover. WOW!!

newuniversal #4 - ahh, I can finally appreciate the art of Larroca, who, i am glad to say, no longer is in a book (x-books) where EVERYTHING is shiny. Things actually look like they have texture in this one. Unfortunately, I don't know anything else about this book other than it's connection to the long ago, new universe book, starbrand, that marvel put out years ago.

the Secret #2 - I bought it cause i think it's some of the best looking art Alexander has put out since his work on queen & country, but even so, it seems rushed and too artsy as opposed to actually help develop the story, but then again, it does not help that i don't know what's going on in this title either.

Welcome to Tranquility #4 - I didn't even know Gail was doing this book until this past week. I picked it up b/c of that. I don't know, there's a lot going on. The first page is hot. The thing with the old geezers playing chess is funny. Emoticon man is funny but odd.

Dungeon: Parade Vol.1 A Dungeon Too Many - I first got into this series with the first volume, but then, it branched all out and got new artists and too much for me to follow, but seeing that the original team was on this book (Sfar & Trondheim) I picked it up. It seems to follow the pacing and humour of the first volume, which is a good thing.

Pirates vs Ninjas #3 - Gail's thread on this is interesting and this book always goes fast at Midtown, so I got this one before it was gone. As expected, the story was crazy and mystical, but I liked the use of greytoned art, which was pretty good.

Justice League of America #6 - wow! that's all I have to say, wow! Great book, love the creative team on the book.

Dead@17, vol.2 #3 - Standard d@17 stuff. Still not up to par on the first volume. WIsh Howard would develop his art style more.

The Building Opposite, vol.1 - This is some quality storytelling. The stories themselves have nothing fantastic about them, but they are about a group of people living in a common building, and their lives with each other. If nothing but wanting to read about characterization, it is a good read. Great book, looking forward to more volumes if they come out. The only bad is the price, a little too much, imo.
