what's your pick?
I have to go with two guys from Jojo. First one is obviously Dio Brando, Jojo's 1-2-3 serie
http://noodle.stc.cx/images/dio-falcoon.jpg
immortal, cannibal, bisexual, vampire. And egomaniac as hell. Plus, if you tear off one of his body parts, even the head, he's still able to recover and grow another one. So useful. He wants the world and his ability to stop time is so interesting there's nothing between him and the ultimate victory. Nothing..besides Jotaro Kujo.
After the coolest final confrontation I've ever read in a manga Dio finally bites the dust, but he was pretty close to win.
Yoshikage Kira, Jojo's 4th serie
http://www.giogio.cn/gh/jostar/kira01.jpg
Kira Yoshikage lives in the small town of Morio Cho, Japan, in a home filled with third place trophies and non-descript photographs. In a drawer, he keeps jars of his finger nail clippings, which he uses to measure his luck for that year. He works a normal salaryman's job, and comes home to cut his finger nails and relax with his girlfriend. He lightly kisses her fingers and then pulls back with a slight frown on his face. But his girl is starting to smell...because it's a cut off female hand. Because you know, Kira is the most dangerous serial killer you will ever meet.
Noone knows him, noone even NOTICES him. He's smarter than everyone. And his stand Killer Queen has the ability to turn everything he touches into a bomb. So, if you meet Kira..don't look at him suspiciously, or you might be look at your own body parts flying NSWE in a funny way
Alkhanphel (New Guyver Series)
He was a dang cool villain. He pwned Aptom casually, made Gyout who was a powerful Zoalord in his own right with the power of gravity run away from him in fear, casually deflected all of Gyouts gravity blasts, came back from a blackhole, then proceeded to pwn Guyver's 1 and 3 by sending their own combined Megasmasher shot back at them. Guy had class too.
Kagato (Tenchi Muyo)
He flat out rocked as a villain.

I think that Uchiha Sasuke of Naruto is shaping up to be an excellent villain. He's not there yet though and I don't think he'll still be one at the end of the series because he'll get redeemed.
Once upon a time my answer was Sessomaru from Inu Yasha. But he doesnt' really qualify as a villian anymore.
Same with Gaara from Naruto.
Seems like a lot of the villians I really like end up not being villians anymore for some reason.

I really like anime villain teams like Akatsuki and CP9. They're cool.
And Kid Buu.

Any of the villains in Angel Sanctuary: Rosiel, Lucifer, Sevotharte, Sandalphon, Mad Hatter...they're all great characters.

Light Yagami.
Completely agreed, though he might not count, being the main character...
After him, two of the villains from "Detective Conan/Case Closed":

Gin: Ruthless killer, evil, efficient, a crack shot...and frighteningly clever.

Kaito Kid: Not quite as evil as Conan's other enemies - mostly, he's a modern-day Arsene Lupin.
He's also a genius with tons and tons of class.

For me I have to go with Yukishiro Enishi from Rurouni Kenshin or Millions Knives from the Trigun Manga.

The Ginyu force. They were cheesy as hell, and thats the definition of greatness in my book.

They're a far more powerful, evil version of the power rangers.
That wear less.

that was one of my favorite moments in the DBZ anime (which I generally didn't like) because it was just too damned silly to not laugh out loud at! ;)
I really liked Gaara from Naruto, and Sesshomaru as well.
one of my favorite anime villians was lady Eboshi from "Princess Mononoke". part of what makes her so fun is that 25 - 30 years ago she would have been the heroine of a "man vs. nature" epic movie... where a woman carves out a sanctuary for the refuse of society in the middle of the wildnerness. yet nearly everybody I knew here in the United States regarded her as a ruthless and wicked villian... and, honestly, I didn't see her that way at all. :( maybe that was Miyazaki's intentions, maybe not. but she's one of my favorite villians.

Char Anzable from Gundam, although he's sort of one of those not-quite villains.

That's the point. Neither side of the conflict was supposed to be right or wrong.
Lady Eboshi, as well as the forest creatures, did both right and wrong.

Who is Jojo?
From "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure", a series in Shonen Jump. There are many Jojos, but the first three (which I am familiar with) are:
Jonathan Joestar: star of the first "season" of Jojo, covering the birth of Dio Brando as a vampire, the founding of the Speedwagon Foundation, and some good ol' fashion vampire-slaying-through-superior-martial-arts. Dio lost all of his body but his head, and surprised attacked Jonathan Joestar on the way across the Atlantic. He ended up seizing Jonathan's body from the neck down. Time period is around Jack the Ripper, who joined Dio and was turned into a vampire.
Joseph Joestar: star of the second "season" of Jojo, covering the battle against the Ultimate Beings. Their names were ACDC, Wham, and Kars. Really. While his grandfather Jonathan was a noble fighter, Joseph is much more sneaky. For example, after agreeing to a martial arts battle against a powerful vampire, he brought an RPG. Also included a good-guy cyborg Nazi, and cited at least two cases of the "Joseph Joestar and air planes don't mix" clause.
Kujo Jotaro: star of the third "season" of Jojo, covering the hopefully final battle against Dio Brando. Jotaro is the grandson of Joseph, and this season is the one that introduces the concept of Stands. Stands are manifestations of one's spirit/fighting spirit that "stands beside you" and aides you. It is awesome and is being sold in the States now. The character in the NBC show "Heroes", Hiro Nakamura, is both a fan of this series, and similiar to some of the characters.
"Season" Four is Josuke Higashikata, and covers the reasons behind the stands.
"Season" Five is Giorno Giovanna, featuring Italian hitmen/gangsters and a relative/something of Dio.
"Season" Six is Jolyne Kujo, and I have little other information on it.

definitely. The story's always interesting and full of humour, the villains are incredibly well characterized, the fights are spectacular and the weirdness isnt just a word. I'll make some examples: there's a rat whose Stand (a summon) is a 1800-like cannon that fires meat melting bullets, a mangaka with the ability to literally open up a person like a book to read the opponent's lives and weaknesses..and if he want, he can write a PS or cancel some parts of it with a rubber, a villain who can cause time to skip ahead...Jojo is one helluva fun and one of the most underrated mangas around

Agreed. I thought of neither side as "villainous".

Legato Bluesummers and Kagato definitely belong on the list, as does Akuma of Street Fighter (does he count, on the basis of there having been several anime Street Fighter movies?)
I'd nominate Nagi from My-HiME as well, but...he's more annoying than evil.

If I were going for greatest Antagonist, I'd choose Eboshi from Princess Mononoke. The greatest villain in my opinion (other than Lord Ilpallazzo) is Light Yagami. even if he is the protagonist, he is still not a very nice guy...

Though I will admit to dressing up as Legato from Trigun due to the awesomeness of his villiany, especially once I read the manga. Though my costume didn't get quite as detailed as I wanted and looked more like the less detailed anime version.

Ha. Very good point. My friends and I love the series. Another friend hated having such a villian as a main character and after a certain point (you can guess the one) he gave up on it. I still sometimes argue with him about it. Acutlaly, just today he was bitching that Code Geass was better than Deathnote in that aspect.
