It would be cool if folks would highlight their best video game accomplishment. Mine was F-zero GX for sure. That game was terribly hard with the last 3 chapters of story mode. It probably took me, my brother, and my best friend a year to beat that game. Satisfying accomplishment though.

F-Zero GX's story mode was crazy stupid-ass hard. I haven't had that much difficulty with a game since the early days of the NES. I definitely count finishing that among my proudest accomplishments.

I don't think #9 was one of the hardest ones... You just have to tweak the settings and get the feel for every curve on the track. Which is a pain, but it's just dependent on effort and patience, unlike #7 which has a lot of luck involved.

I think I wrote a post on this board talking about VH story mode some time ago, but it seems to have disappeared.

I had the same experience just recently. I plugged in my old NES and was fooling around with various games. I put in TMNT and my first feeling was "Wow, this game is a lot worse than I remember." Then I lost two turtles before the end of the first area. I think a large part of that is due to it being a basically crappy game, because I can still do as well or better at other tough games that are actually good, like Blaster Master. Mastering TMNT was about learning to cope with the horrible controls and unclear objectives.

I've been playing games for more than 25 years, and when I was a kid I would rent a game every weekend and try to beat it in that weekend. There's no way I could remember everything or even a large part of it.

But I'll take a stab at some:

Street Fighter II SNES on the very hardest mode without switching characters. And cheating, by spamming one of Chun Li's moves. Was never that good at fighting games. The highest I could beat it at legitimately was at difficulty five usually, I think I did it once at six.

Pitfall (I count surviving while picking up all the treasure for 20 minutes as beating it)
Super Mario Bros. (Once beat it about eight times in a row using warps) and all Super Mario platformers up to Sunshine, which I'm working on.
