Ok maybe I am just really stupid here. I read secret war, twice. And maybe I just couldnt get into it or something but nothing will stick in my head and I was a bit confused at the end. I just felt like I wanted to get it over with, I didnt enjoy it.

So would someone give me a breakdown of what happened without giving away any spoilers that might be coming out of it please. I dont know if it effects civil war or not, but I just started reading CW now that I have the whole story.

Thanks.

Nick Fury finds out that the Latverian government (this is in a period where Dr. Doom is dead) is secretly supplying supervillains with costumes and gimmicks. The government wants to avoid an international incident, so they tell him to ignore it. He doesn't do that. He recruits a bunch of superheroes to go on a punitive secret mission into Latveria. They end up destroying a big chunk of Castle Doom (and possibly Doomstadt along with it). One year later, the former Latverian head of state and a bunch of tricked out supervillain minions go after the heroes involved. There's a big fight in New York, and only the FF's involvement prevents a huge loss of life. Unfortunately, the incident clues Fury's superiors in about the original unsanctioned secret mission against a foreign government, so he has to go underground to avoid prosecution.

So . . . long story short, the main consequence was that Nick Fury lost his job.

The fairly recent one, written by Bendis?

Basically the story takes place in 2 time periods, the present and a year ago.

A year ago, Nick Fury discovers that the Latverian government (Lucia Von Bardas, not Doom) is supplying tech to American tech-based supervillains. The American government won't allow Fury to send SHIELD in to do anything, so he instead covertly gets Cap, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Black Widow, and a new recruit, Daisy Johnson (daughter to Mr Hyde who can control seismic waves) to secretly go in and overthrow the government. The plan goes horribly wrong and Daisy creates an earthquake that levels Doomstadt (or whatever the capitol city is). Trying to recover from his mistake, Fury erases the memory from all the heroes he sent in.

One year later, in the present day, tech-based supervillains are attacking the heroes who went to Latveria and Cage ends up in the hospital. The heroes get back together to figure out what is going on, and right when they piece back togehter what they did in Latveria, an army of supervillains attacks, led by a disfugured Lucia Bardas. All the super-teams rush in, and there's a big fight that ends with Daisy Johnson again using seismic waves to kill Bardas. Upon hearing that Fury messed with his mind, Wolverine flips out and guts Fury with his claws. Except it was really a Fury LDM that he set up before going into hiding. The govermnent found out about Fury's secret war and he's now wanted for war crimes. The president then appoints Maria Hill to be SHIELD director, and the story dovetails pretty nicely into the begining of New Avengers.

And if I remember correctly, a big part of the US government reluctance to topple Von Bardas stems from the fact that they put her in power in the first place, as a puppet leader/ally of convenience.

And while the irony of using high profile heroes in a supposedly "secret" operation is not lost on me, there is an in-story reason why Fury uses them. If I remember correctly, it's for the symbolic statement - it's not the US government in Latveria, but rather heroes, since Von Bardas is a villain like Red Skull rather than a legitimate head of state.

I'm kinda curious if Bendis chose the heroes in Secret War because he knew that he's making them the new Avengers roster, or if it's the other way around.

I just think he picked characters he likes.

Ok I recall all of that now that I read what you said. For some reason I thought I was missing something from it.

So when doom was gone during that time period is that when reed left him in hell?
