It certainly LOOKS like him. Could be a bait n' switch tho.

Saw it mentioned on another forum that the writer or artist shot down the rumor.

huh, that kinda sucks. That alone was like, the only reason I had interest in b uying the book. I mean, here we have this new guy, who can absorb energy, has some leftover from his mind-contolr adventure, and to make up for the damage he's caused, he signs up for the team that he tore in two, after having the only surviving member nearly bite his head off.
But it looks like the collective man will be an agent of shield.
Lame.

It would be kind of in bad taste. Can't see them saying "Ok remember that group you slaughtered for no reason well here is the suit he wore by the way you also slaughtered his wife at the same time and left their baby and orphan, but I'm sure no one will have any problem with you wearing his old costume"

Bryne made the mistake of killing off Vindicator -- sorry, Guardian -- back in Alpha Flight (Vol. 1) #12, and it's pretty much been all downhill for the character ever since.

This tells a story methinks.

I think that's the point.
The guy is in SHIEL D custody, so they're going to put him to work, in some sort of prison-release program.
It's not like Alpha Flight voted him in; they were probably just handed the guy from a higher authority, and hate him. classic story-telling set-up.

Plus it wasnt Michaels fault...and he's now using his powers to fight for good in Gaurdian's place. Doesn't seem disrespectful. Seems fitting

What would be fitting is him doing it another costume and name. Would seem pretty damn disrespectull to anyone who knew the original Guardian to see the guy who killed him and his wife walking arund in his old suit.

Unless something like SHIELD is forcing him to assume the identity. Or maybe he wants to atone for his mistake and try to keep the heroic Guardian legacy going.
Plus, I think its supposed to be the point that survivors think its disrespectful (i.e. Sasquatch)

yeah, but if that's your argument then why are they calling the team 'Omega Flight', the team that was created to (and this is important) kill the original Gaurdian?
The Michael person is prolly (and Im speculatin here) joinin' the team under the SHIELD program, along with US Agent and Arachne, becaue he doesnt really fit in anywhere else.
you could put him in the Thunderbolts, but Venom or Bullseye will prolly kill him when he isnt looking.
the Mighty avengers, you say? Ms. Marvel's only recruiting the best in the field, it looks like.
New Avengers? Wolverine will prolly kill him.
X-men? naaaah.
So really, the best place to put this new guy is in a mini series. an Omega Flight mini series. He'll get a chance to repay the team, and learn about his amazing powers.
That, and the preview art in New Joe Fridays made it look like Sasquatch was gonna eat his face off.

Okay, I did a bit of detective work and a big piece of the Guardian puzzle came into play the other day with one of solicits that had Walter "sas-ing" out in front of a bald guy who looks familiar, coupled with the image of the new Guardian shedding a tear, the fact that we haven't seen him since Avengers, and he has some o' them energy powers... I believe the new Guardian to be non other than
(spoilers) Michael aka The Collective (spoilers)
I could be wrong... but my gut tells me I'm on point concerning this...
and if it is the case, he should go back to the Vindicator codename considering what he's going to have to overcome due to his little "walk" thru Canada...

not to mention that he has no training/experience with his powers.

Guardian's death shook Alpha Flight to its core, yet the team survived without him. I think Marvel's worst mistake is bringing James Hudson back from the dead years later. Heather Hudson did fine with Alpha Flight as its new leader.

Come now, you think Marvel's worst mistake was something that was done pre-Quesada? I have trouble believing that.
