View Full Version : Blogs versus The Forum
All kidding aside for a second: compare and contrast what it is that we do here as members of the CBR Community forum, and what is being done in blogs?

Are you data mining for some really, really boring college course, or something?

My blog is so very different than my interactions here; it's strictly (okay, mostly) about what's going on in my head & heart.
CBR is about everyone else.

Where do you guys find the time to blog??? Jesus, it takes me two hours just to catch up on Rita's sometimes and my email, let alone even attempt to start a blog. I need to become a meth addict or something, so that I can stay up all night and find time to start a blog.

Just interested in opinions.

I guess that I use this place a bit like a blog though myself sometimes; and I am sorry if that is a annoying to anyone.

I have found that I really do not have time to do much of anything at all that I actually want to--though I need to sometimes for my own sanity--and that is why I guess I just make time (which sucks of course, because it is effectively a trade-off for sleep).

Insomnia + no life + fast reader + obsessive introspection + not much to do at work + QWETRY keypad on my phone + 2 hours of commuting each day = plenty of time to read & write.

Who really wants to hear me rant on and on about MMA on this forum? I'm not like SuperEcw or anything.

Nothing wrong with that. Finding things to keep yourself sane is a good thing. Blog on yo. (maybe I'll start a blog one day. But mine would just be about all the straight girls at work I have crushes on. Lame...and childish) :D

Hmmm... that sounds familiar. Maybe I do have time to blog after all. (Depression sucks. Hang in there Jeff)

I started a blog over a year ago as place to basically take a mental bowel movement from time to time. I've basically abandoned it, because CBR serves that purpose for me just fine, and it's much more interactive.

My blogs all serve a different purpose from CBR for me. My Jewish-themed blog is for ranting about Jewish issues & WWTT is less personal than what I post here.

Hey Homer, you got a piece of mental TP on your shoe.
And I feel the same way. Blogs are too static and self-serving for the most part, at least in my opinion. And who the hell feels like having to serve up new content all the time. I'd rather rely on the same stupid jokes, puns and Monty Python quotes til the cows come home.....

Agreed.
For me it's double-entendres, boobs, The Simpsons, Spinal Tap, The Big Lebowski and random silly pictures.

Pretty much my take.
I read the occasional column on CBR, but I like the inter-active nature of boards more.
I do not wite a blog, nor do I read any.

I'm just shocked this one isn't in inane poll form.
I'm really not trying to be annoying--just asking a simple question.
Do you think that there is any difference between these types of sites, namely: Blogs, and the Forum style of posting?
To me they seem virtually the same. But I'm used to having my ass handed to me on this site on a regualr basis; so I was jsut looking for some benign input, rather than give my strict opinion.

Ah! Naturally, Nikita is always there to cheer me up again--oh thank-you!:D

I am so with you on that. Although, I wouldn't call myself a fast reader. I tend to plod through a lot of the things I read.
Because of my work schedule, I even bought a book on speed reading, for over Christmas vacation; although I found that I didn't have time to read it all the way through anyway. Bitter, bitter irony.

If you can't tell the difference between A) a communal conversation, and B) a journal, then you're just not paying close enough attention to either.

They don't make them like they used to. It's either models like the one you have, or it's a Blackberry/Treo. Nothing in between anymore.

That's weird, because I know a girl who got one like that last year.

There are a few major commercial type blogs where every entry gets hundreds of comments from a dedicated group of regulars, who end up commenting on each other's comments as well as on the original post, and I can see where those would look pretty similar to a messageboard thread. But most blogs are just one person talking and no one responding to any real effect.
Although I guess some board threads are like THAT too.

I've pretty much run out of material to put in the Big Blog of Booze (http://bigblogofbooze.blogspot.com), for instance.
At the same time, I keep an art blog on my MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/howyadoin_graphics) to promote my artwork, but it's essentially just a simplified version of my art thread (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=146) on the NEB, and neither one of them gets much in the way of responses.
Yeah, I know. Shameless.

And I thought people could reply to blogs also. Hmm...you live and learn.

Not the same.
In a thread, you're having an intended conversation.
On a blog, sometimes comments are allowed. And once in a great while, the blogger will respond to the comments. But it's not a conversation. It's more like a classroom lecture.
Or when someone writes an editorial and maybe some people write letters to the editor in response.
It's not real interaction.
