Well - when you have ALL the Hellboy comics itīs time to collect ALL the other comics penciled by Mike Mignola. So here it is (just print it out and take it to your local comicshop) :
Mike Mignola (almost) non-Hellboy Check-list
(Note : The Mignola-list features titles of the "short-stories" and year of publication - the first edition, not the reprint/TPB. The list is done alphabetically and does not include issues, where Mignola only did the inks, the cover, a pin-up or the writing. If there are no pages listed, Mignola did the entire book.)
The list is partly based on the "Mignola Comixography" by Miguel Angel Alvarez and up-dated with info from Brian T. Riverīs "Mike Mignola Comic Art Catalog" from CBA # 23.
For helping with this list I would like to thank Nick Warmack, JNapper (from Hellboy.com), Christine Mignola and Mal Earl.

Perhaps Next Men # 21 shouldnīt be on the list since it features Hellboy or perhaps Goon # 7 should be on the list ??

Thanks for posting that, Jan! The only things of any length on there that I haven't read are the back-up stories in Metropol 9-11, which I've never been able to find, and Marvel Superheroes Summer Special #10, which I'd never heard of, or at least hadn't realized Mignola contributed so much to. What is this story about? What Marvel heroes feature in it?
Of the Marvel stories I HAVE read, the one I'd recommend most to Hellboy fans is the 2-part back-up in Thor. It features stumpy-horned demons who are clearly progenitors of the big red guy.

SWEET!
I was curious about how many other comics he'd done and what their titles were, I'll be sure to copy and paste this. Least until I can print it out when I can go looking...might as well wait, if I print it out now I'll probably just lose it. Thanks for taking the time to put this list together.

Brisco - Itīs a Vision & The Scarlet Witch story (with zombies IIRC) - the inker (Armando Gil) ruined the pencils.
Hells Orc - You are welcome.

Has anyone seen Marvel Fanfare # 16 with the Mignola story "A Fable"? Itīs a beautiful little story with Namor. Itīs inked by Mike and has a very poetic "touch". I think itīs his first published work (from 1984) and IMO it looks much better than Rocket Raccoon from 1985.
A fun look at great things to come.

Brisco - Itīs a Vision & The Scarlet Witch story (with zombies IIRC) - the inker (Armando Gil) ruined the pencils.
I got this the other day, and yikes! It was published in 1992, but there's no way Mignola drew this in 1992, bad inks or not. So does anyone know what's the deal with this? I'm inclined to think it was something held over from Marvel Fanfare or maybe even earlier.
I also got the Ironwolf hardcover, and it's beautiful. Highly recommended. I haven't read it yet, but on a flip-though it seems very Moorcock-inspired, once again reminding me how much I'd love to see a Mike Mignola written-and-drawn Jerry Cornelius story.
There must be a checklist out there for all the covers he has done for non-Hellboy comics. The first couple that spring to my mind are Daredevil Annual 7 (1991) and Aquaman 6 (1995).

Have you seen the Moorcock written "Chronicles of Corum" stories Mignola did ?
Most of these are inked by Kelley Jones and are very similar in style to Iron Wolf.

We were introduced to Hellboy comics and Mike Mignola only last summer by a friend of ours. He's one of these guys who's been collecting a lot of comics for twenty years or so and has a big collection. Since Morna and I have gotten into Hellboy he's leant us earlier Mignola comics to read. We had recently returned a bunch to him and his car got stolen during the Christmas holidays. He got his car back in good condition (woo!) but all the contents were gone. Including the bag with all the Mignola comics. He lost Alpha Flight, Cosmic Odyssey, Woverine - Jungle Adventure, Phantom Menace and Gotham by Gaslight. We want to try and help him replace his Mignolas so if anyone see's any of these series please let us know.

I try to always have a MM list of "need to gets" with me when I go comic hunting, but I always end up losing it along the way.

I've had those two for a couple of years now, so it was nice to finish it up. And yes, I'm going for covers, pin ups, pretty much everything except for stuff that he inked over somone else's pencils.
The stores I went to had plenty more stuff on the list, I just didn't have anymore money. I think I'm gonna bring in some comics that they would have no problem moving and offer a trade.

Called up a couple of the local shops and they're gonna take some stuff that I'm not so into any more (but that would sell very quickly) in trade for a bunch of Mignola goodies.

Detective comics #583
X Factor #55 & Annual #6
X Force #8
Zombie World #2
X Men Classic #68 (completing Mike's cover run on that title)
Critical Mass #1
Batman/Judge Dredd : Vendetta in Gotham
Punisher #6
Solar #24
Lobo : Unamerican Gladiators #3 & 4 (finishing that up as well)
Batman #452 - 454
Action Comics Annual #6 (what's up with all of the #6 annuals?!)
Dark Horse Comics #2
and
Gen 13 #13c, which features Hellboy but no Mignola
All in all, a pretty good day. Traded in some old comics straight across and they STILL have more Mignola goodies that I gotta go back for. Had more to trade in, but the guy said to come in tomorrow and talk to the guy who works Fridays.

After scoring all that "new" Mignola loot, I decided I'd get home and rebag and board all of my Mignola books. Theres something about seeing his amazing covers slipped into pristine polyplastic and stacked nicely into a fresh long box. And now I need a second one to fit it all.

Scored a bunch more goodies, but rather than list all of them, I thought I'd just point out a few key things.
One of the books I thought I would have a real hard time tracking down is a little digest sized thing called "Colossus" by Mark Andrews (I believe that's his name). Rick posted Mike's pin up from this comic not too far back, and it's a very sweet piece. I just wanted to encourage anyone to pick this up if they run across it as it's a really sweet little story about a knight who's soul is magically placed inside a large metal body. The cover price is $10, but the guy at the store gave it to me for a measly dollar and that really made my day!
I also picked up The Defenders #116, which is Mike's first professional comics work as an inker, although he isn't credited. The inker is listed as "Diverse Hands". I also got Marvel Fanfare #16, which I believe is his first work as a penciller, and boy is it bad! Mike even admitted it in an interview or two. I'll try to post some scans at some point so you can see for yourself.
I'm also discovering as I hunt these down, that many of these comics I had as a little kid and I remember absolutely LOVING the covers back then. Little did I know that all these years later I'd be a huge fan of this particular artist. Even though his style has changed drastically, his design sense has always been appealing.
Being a rather poor high school student I was pretty burnt some months ago buying what i believed to be a Mignola penciled X-Men book over e-bay. Turns out it was only his cover. I'm not sure if the e-bay presentation was unclear about that or if I just screwed up. It's a great cover but I don't have enough money to go hunting these things... But shipping was only from Brittain so no real harm done

Well Kid - Personally I like that story very much :) All though Iīll admit the style is a bit "quirky" (did I just invent a new word there ??)
- Jan
Haven't actually read it yet, so the story itself may be pretty good. The art is just SO removed to what Mike's work was to become even a book or two later that it took me by surprise. He really grew in his first handful of pencilling jobs.

Hey Jan, I could probably find a copy of Alpha Flight 31, Elementals 9, & the two Hulk issues for ya. Is the Happy Endings the smaller, thicker book that was about $10 (US)? If so, there are still a lot of those around here and I could pick that up for ya as well. Possibly a Solomon Kane as well. I just picked that up and think I may have seen another one somewhere.
On the flip side, have you seen any (or have an extra copy?) of any of these laying around?
Hellraiser 13
Zorro 6
The Book of Twilight
Scary Godmother:Bloody Valentine 1
Dark Horse Presents 142
Dr Tomorrow 1
The Nocturnals: Witching Hour
Deadman 3 and 5
We could arrange a trade of some sort (there are still quite a few others I'm missing, but these are at the top of the list) or I could just pick up the issues I mentioned and send 'em off to ya.
I'd be interested in finding out what books you have extras of and would be willing to part with, or may be aware of at your local shop.

Tracked down a few of those really hard to find books by spending 2 hours digging through unmarked bins at a local shop. Hunting can be such a blast if you've got the time and the patience! I managed to walk away with a copy of Hellraiser #13 at cover price,(!) among a handful of others. Being broke really sucks, but at least they're taking my trade ins!
Also, this may have been answered already, (I'll read through all of the previous posts here in a minute, but since I'm on the subject) but I also stumbled across a Godzilla portfolio that featured a piece by Mignola. Does anyone know if this is the same art that appears in the Godzilla trade paperback that Dark Horse put out?
Colossus by Mark Andrews(?) has also just been reprinted in a larger format. Unfortunately, the Mignola pin up is nowhere to be seen. Still, it's a pretty good read, but at $25 I'd seek out the original. $10 with a sweet Mignola pin-up.

- Jan
You know what, Jan? After I actually read the thing, I have to agree with you. What an amazing little story! I think I'm becoming infamous for jumping the gun.
